What the fuck happened to rock music?
>>
>>722259457
It went downhill ever since Nirvana got popular.
>>
It seems to me at some point people will run out of good original material. Maybe it already happened... maybe that's why all music in general is worse now.
>>
what are original lyrics by singer/songwriter
>>
>>722259457
every genre has a limited lifetime because people only like 10-15 chord progressions tops. Everything in music is based on those progressions and about 40-50 melody tropes. It's all the same with different packaging.
>>
>>722259457
It thematically shifted from passion and peace to capitalism and became sterile and vacuous as a result.
>>
A combination of both the lack of people buying the music and the fact it's not as accessible as the carefully designed repeative crappy pop music they push on people today. Uncreative repeative pop music is both easier to make and produce and easier to hypnotize the younger generation into behaving like dumbass swag yards who are more likely to be influenced to spend money on retarded shit

Nirvana was the most overrated band of the 90s.
Cobain was a whiny, narcissistic cunt.
Every band after was influenced by them.
That's why rock is dead.

The "it's popular therefore it sucks" mentality clashing with the "all good music is shit" mentality. There are plenty of good modern bands, as long as you don't listen to the radio too much.
>>

This. Radio is almost exclusively garbage.

Rock isn't dead. Radio music has definitely taken over the mainstream. But if you do some digging you will find a lot of great bands.
>>
>>722263315
That's true. The good music from back in the day overshadows the crap music that was definitely around too.
>>
all you shitskin faggots saying "hurr durr music is shit now" are just plain retarded. A lot more music gets put out now, therefore you just have to dig a little deeper to find good music. Also, Nirvana is overrated af.
>>
>>722263478
It didn't overshadow it, the shitty music was just forgotten in favor of the better, more memorable stuff. Regardless whether you love them or hate them, a lot of the Beatles' early stuff is pretty generic crap, and this is coming from a fan.

>>722259457
Honestly, I believe the internet and exposure to excess information..

Take Kurt, since you posted him.
He grew up in a time where you had to actively get out and seek new music and art. You could have "YOUR" bands that were truly gems. Obscure things were far more obscure and this created more unique personalities, and thus.. more creative artists and flavorful music. He even dreamed up his own idea of punk rock before even actually hearing it, and even made music in his room before being exposed to it.. He may have not been a great guitar player, but he was an excellent song writer, and this is due to living is a society where being an outcast was truly more of an alienating experience. Being weird was truly weird. There was no internet to connect with others, only music scenes. Kurt even felt out of place in those scenes. The society he lived in molded him into his own person.

Nowadays people are all exposed to the same things in excessive amounts. People no longer share things through word of mouth or find new things hidden away in record stores. It's all available at a click of a mouse and you can just binge through it on youtube now. You can really appreciate the same when you had less convenience and less options.. at least, I feel most people are that way. People follow formulas and produce extremely similar art and music due all of this. Modern life creates more and more similar personalities in terms of creativity. Older generations may have had a lot of average folk, as they always have and will.. but society them produced more unique artists.

I just feel like society is burnt out and exhausted everything sound-wise.. and it just doesn't produce many interesting and unique people anymore.. The 90's was truly the last big explosion of unique music.. The 2000's was the last few spurts.. It's just dry and stale now.. Even the most standout artists sound like old stuff.

Kurt was an SJW. He killed rock like Hillary killed those guys in Bengazi.

Hey faggots you have been visited by Paul the Britbong Paedo. Reply hello paedo or he will rape all the children in your family in their sleep.
>>
>>722263924
Both maybe? I'm not really sure. A lot of their first music sounds very similar to stuff put out by other boy bands that were long since forgotten but also popular. They only reason anyone remembers the Beatles is because they changed and became unique.
>>
>>722259457

its underground again.

record labels dont go for rock anymore, they just go for $.

take 21 Pilots for instance....they are what passes for rock nowadays because they have edgy/emo lyrics that are basically rapped over over-produced electronic music.

nailed all the demographicsbut its definitely not "rock"

I don't just listen to rock, I follow a lot of music genres and rock is something I haven't found anything interesting in as of late. I mostly listen to the Offspring, Iron Maiden and Imagine Dragons

>>722265723
Thanks to him. The only reason music changed, for better and worse, is because of him. The mainstream came to Nirvana and Nirvana brought the underground to the masses. It's had it's ups and downs ever since because a lot of people didn't truly get it and just tried to copy. Though, some people did and they went on to to progress things, and even branch off entirely.

Things are just milked dry now. It's not and is his fault.

none of those bands are relevant in 2017. shit, the most popular band out of that list is avenged sevenfold, and they couldn't even break 150K sales in america with their last album.

rock is dead. hate to say it, but its true.
>>
it's still alive and well. The things we don't live in a vacuum where we can just point out what's good and bad in the rock music spectrum so instead were left scavenging in the dark trying to get through all the bad and mediocre shit in order to get to the good stuff. It's very easy to say "hey look at the 90s and how much better rock music was" but you're forgetting all the terrible crappie stuff hat came out at that time too. I think we're living in a great time for rock and every other kind of music but we won't able to see the clearer picture until 10 years I the future and then we'll say " damn they had some fucking awesome music in back in the 2010's why does music our suck now???" and the cycle will repeat. Such is life
>>
>>722259457

I would argue music criticism has shifted our perception more than anything. It used to be critics often focused on exposing larger audiences to obscure indie acts. But with the internet providing the musically curious a machine apart from music critics to broaden their horizons, criticism has shifted its focus on Top 40 music in an attempt to remain relevant and get clicks.

Weren't the Beatles the first to make psychedelic music with Sargent peppers ? Anyways they may be generic compared to today's music but by the standards of their time they were very innovative.

no, 13th floor elevators and jimi hendrix already did psychedelic stuff in 1966 when the beatles were still doing their merseybeat thing. though albums like sgt pepper sure had a gigantic influence on some of the psychedelic greats, like hendrix.

Well, just like how music stores could stock their shelves with their personal selection of music/music they signed contracts to sell, the gateways of the internet can be curated in such a way that you only hear/see what "they" want you to hear.

I don't really care for Rand. I'm an advocate of capitalism and a relatively free market, but the kind of anarchic capitalist utopia she would build in her books is not feasible in today's market. Her writing style was also pretty stiff, not exactly pleasurable to read at length.

But yes, I believe firmly in buying things that have a modicum of value or merit to them.
