as a non-fan of pokemon (it was a few years after my time) it seems to me that the ultimate appeal of Pokemon is the collecting aspect, that pokemon were the right kind of cute and adorable to make catching and pitting them against each other endearing.

I had a little brother who was totally gaga for Pokemon and I'd take him to the local book store's pokemon card club and all the kids (and middle aged manchildren) sat around with their cards discussing different combinations, builds and strategies. The story and even the gameplay seemed to be the icing on the cake to that.
