Rossi Rio Grande .30-30. I picked it up for less than $400, and it works well. It takes some breaking in, but once it wears in, It'll shoot great. I put a cheap $130 2x7x34mm scope on it. Actually has very manageable recoil, as well. I'm a pussy with too much kick on a gun, even though I love a huge kick, so this is a plus for a hunting weapon.

Get a .25" nail at a hardware store.
Grind the point off.
Drill a hole slightly larger than the pin.
Stick nail in takedown holes.
push spring and pin through hole with paperclip then rotate nail 90 deg.
Push in the takedown pin which pushes the nail out and the detent drops into the slot.
Done!

I ony have 4 used guns, and 2 weren't really used. My dad bought me my first handgun from a friend of his because his friend needed some cash and wanted to unload the gun then, and it was an older version Ruger GP100 6" with the less pronounced shoulder from 95-96 for only $300, when everywhere else the same thing. Then my first gun was Savage 111 .30-06 from my grandpa for helping him move to AZ. My dad bought a Glock 19 mostly for me to shoot, and when he was tired of owning it, sold it to me for $300, and he gave me his SR1911 for free as a christmas gift. Otherwise, I only buy new guns. Not much more expensive considering the more reliable nature of new vs.used, so I haven't bought anything from a pawn shop, yet. Still looking fof the right time and deal on a Mosin or SKS. Would much prefer the M!/Garand, but they are not cheap and tend to be rare, since they weren't mass produced like the Soviets and collectors snatch them up right away.

I know one guy who got his FFl so he could buy his own guns cheap, and since you have to sell a certain amount to keep your FFL, apparently, he sells to trusted friends/acquaintances. I bought my 10/.22 and S&W M&P 15 Sport from him. I met a guy recently who was thinking about getting his FFL, so I gave him my number to let me know if he ever does. It's nice, because people like that tend to barely charge you over cost since they have no overhead.
