What is the climate? What is on the island?

Without knowing that:

>Pot

Useful for carrying things while gathering also usable for cooking and most importantly it gives you a way to clean any water by distilling using the lid.

>Tarp

Early shelter, useful for bundling and can be used to construct a pen or fish farm.

>knife

most tools can be fashioned with wood and rocks but without a good knife you can easily spoil food by rupturing their guts while flaying. It can also be very useful for delicate jointing

>?

Last one would be dependent on the area, if it was a large island with a lot of fast or dangerous fauna I would prefer the rifle. If there are few or no land animals I would choose the fishing rod. If neither option was particularly exploitable I would choose the vitamins so food gathering could be limited to caloric needs until a sustainable farm could be developed.

First aid kit gets an honorable mention but access to clean salt water and careful execution can negate the need.

Everything else is a luxury or can be made there.
>>
>>721909666
It's not as great as distilling it, but given the hypothetical, boiling the water w/ the pot makes more sense in the long term. Of course the pot will corrode in due time, but it should last longer than the waterpurifier even being next to the ocean.
>>
1. Mirror
2. Tarp
3. Flash light
4. Water purifier

I'd want to get off the island so I'd want to maximise my chances of getting seen. Plus shelter to keep the sun off.
>>
>>721912507
The pot is clearly cast iron and will last centuries. You can distill the water by boiling it and catching the vapor with the lid.

Even with a freshwater source the pot is much better than a purifier because it purifies the water better and for longer and has other uses.
>>
>>721913053
A good idea, self rescue is basically zero so you would want to signal but a better signal than a mirror or flashlight would be a smoke cloud that raises up so high it can be seen thousands of miles away in every direction. All you need is a big fire and wet things to burn on it.

So in this case you don't need any special tools to be seen.
>>
>>721908377
pot, mirror,FAK, knife
>>
OP here, you're 100 miles south of Chile.
>>
>>721913776
Mirror is useless, better easier ways to make a fire or signal. Sharp brittle blades are also useless because you are taking the knife.
>>
>>721914077
Nigger needs to look his best
>>
>>721908377
Knife, compass, tarp, weed.

I don't trust the raft to get me across the ocean, but the tarp will be useful in the long term, shelter, storage, etc. on a wooden raft. Compass will guide me home, and the knife is necessary.

Weed is the backup plan. Just plant a ton of weed on the island, light a giant bonfire with it every night and some bros will cruise by eventually.
>>
>>721914682
Make a small pool with dirt to block the waves and plant fronds around it to block the wind. Place the pool between you and the sun. Free Mirror.
>>
Hammock, raft, boots and compass
>>
>>721915212
Compass is useless. You can tell your direction by the way the sun moves across the sky. You can navigate by landmarks on the island and navigate by the stars at night.

Also if all of that was impossible somehow you could still make a compass with a pool of water sheltered from the wind, a leaf and either a small rock or dirt. When placed very carefully to not create surface movement, any magnetic particulate in the rock or dirt will be moved slightly by the earths magnetic pole showing you its direction. This method is incredibly slow because the pull is minute and there is a lot of room for error. You would need to do several test and use the aggregate data for your answer.

Tarp and knife, for sure.
After reading the rest of the thread, I'm caught between the water purifier and the pot. This choice really depends on how much I can replenish the purifier, and how I can use it.
Come to think of it, the rope's pretty utilitarian. That's the third definite item I'm bringing.

>>
>>721916638
That raft isn't going to help you get across the ocean. Also if you can't navigate by the sun or the stars what makes you think you can read a compass?
>>
>>721909778
>rope
>hiking boots

You can make rope, you also hiking boots are the definition of luxury in this scenario.
>>
Easy, knife rod boots matches. As long as the island isn't completely shit then shelter, water collection and a bbq should be easy and fun to craft right off the bat. The other shit's just used sparingly while I work out how to use island resources to build better equipment.
>>
>>721916967
>tent

What else can your tent do? The tarp can do everything the tent can do and more. The island provides all the things you need for shelter. Also that water purifier wont last a month with daily use and it wont desalinate ocean water.

>>
>>721918373
>Blown away

You tie it down and brace the center with a support rod.

>Poison animals

This is a trope that is blown out of proportion. If you have a tarp above you and a raised bed below you and a fire going nothing is going to bother you at night.

>Dig a well

On an island? Surrounded by salt water? There is no freshwater there. There is barely a chance for a spring. Your only reasonable chance at fresh water would be an in land pond that would be crawling with parasites.

Enjoy.

>>721918519
That saw is no good for cutting down a standing tree. As you cut the tree will press down on the blade. That is why axes are used to cut down trees before motorized saws were invented.

Yeah no shoes will be fine down the beach, but when I'm in the jungle area it'll mainly be for work and I'll need to be able to get to what I need with a minimum of fuss.

See after the basics are set I'll begin to develop the island - a nice cabin with a couple bedrooms, marine traps to automate catching / stockpiling of food, a nice firepit and outdoor setting, that kind of stuff.

Once I'm comfortable I'll go on to build more cabins along the beach, get it looking like a nice place for family getaways, that way if I'm eventually rescued I'll have a resort / tour business ready to go.

So yeah I want the boots

No, because the odds of my being stranded somewhere that I'd need that skill are so tiny that it's not worth the time I'd need to put into mastering the skill.

>If you need to be trained on how to apply gauze and bandaids, then you are already going to die
I'm going to a jungle island. My concern is more about the antibiotics, antiseptics, and disinfectants.

>Carve a bowl out of wood
Which you can't use to boil water with, which was the point of taking it in the first place.

>Build a proper shelter and you won't need a tarp.
True, but you're assuming you'll have time to do that in the first few days, and that the weather will be great on the day you arrive. It's a lot easier to take some wire from the medkit and tie up a tarp than it is to build a shelter in a monsoon.

Though it's only fair I return your critique, so...
>raft
If that's intended as an escape method, you didn't think that through. If it's intended for fishing, just build a float dude. It's literally one of the easiest things in the world to build, you literally just need some trees.

>Fishing pole
All well and good, but line and hooks will be an issue.

>Saw
Seems a bit... Pointless? I mean, I can see how it would be useful, but I can't think of many ways it's actually going to make the process of surviving easier. The few examples I can think of where you'd use it have ways you could just get around it.

>Hiking boots.
Reasonably sensible, but it depends on the climate of the island. As someone who lived in Guatemala for 3 years, I can tell you, those are going to be uncomfortable as fuck in a tropical zone, and if you don't take real good care of your feet, you're going to get a fungal infection.

>salt water is sufficient to clean a wound.
As a paramedic I can tell you that this false. It can help sanitize it to a certain extent, but it won't do shit for infection over time, and in a jungle climate infection is a huge issue.

Weed was also a terrible choice. That shit's not helping you stay alive.

Not the other guy but salt water is a great disinfectant and the reality is an antibiotic from a FAK isn't going to help against anything other than a scratch.

Also you can boil water in a wooden bowl but carving a wooden bowl takes fucking forever and the pot is so fucking good.

Matches are a requirement for people who cant start a fire on their own. They open the door to fire usage which is what will keep you alive and signal your rescue. A fire is easy to keep going.

>>raft
>If that's intended as an escape method, you didn't think that through. If it's intended for fishing, just build a float dude. It's literally one of the easiest things in the world to build, you literally just need some trees.

A raft is great for traveling faster, especially if there is dense forest/jungle. My idea was primarily for fishing though... and when I'm not using it, I can make a temporary lean-to until I construct my primary shelter.

>>Fishing pole
>All well and good, but line and hooks will be an issue.

A figured a fishing pole means a functional fishing pole with at least some line. If that isn't the case, I could make something work either way.

>>Saw
>Seems a bit... Pointless? I mean, I can see how it would be useful, but I can't think of many ways it's actually going to make the process of surviving easier. The few examples I can think of where you'd use it have ways you could just get around it.

Have you ever been camping? A saw is perfect for SAWING wood. You can saw limbs/trees/bamboo for shelter construction. And it makes collecting fire wood so much easier. What are you gonna do? look for loose limbs on the ground? Come on /b/ro.

I'll give you that. I'd be more worried about getting cuts and such if I were wearing anything else. Also, boots are good for ankle support so you don't twist your ankle over rocky terrain. Obviously you gotta take them off and make sure you stay dry underneath... that goes without saying.
>>
>>721922305
Dumb dumb, it will kill bacteria that have entered the wound during the laceration. It desiccates the cells and they die, you lose some skin cells. If you already have an infection it wont do shit but it is enough to stop an infection from starting.

Also you should know the antibiotics in a FAK aren't going to stop an established infection either.
>>
>>721922370

Also,
>an antibiotic from a FAK isn't going to help against anything other than a scratch.
Depends on what kind of kit you're getting, but talking about the kind of EMT kit that I have, there's plenty there that would help you, and even some bacitracin or something would be absolutely invaluable considering how easy it is to get infections in the jungle. Plus the kit is going to have plenty of bandages and pins, which will both be very useful. Many of the emergency variety FAKs even come with matches and/or energy bars.

Not him but:

>raft
The raft is an okay choice because it is versatile in that it can be used for shelter and as a sled for carrying many things but it has limited use as a vehicle especially when you consider the other uses will likely puncture it. Also fishing from an inflatable raft is not appealing at all.

>Fishing pole

Seems like a great idea but the reality is you can catch many fish with an inland channel trap.

Dig out an area into the beach and let water flow into it. Find a big stick and wait for a fish. Either try to spear the fish if you are good at that or just bash the water to stun the fish. Tear it apart and bait the trap. More will come in and not be able to get out. You can expand the trap to be an actual fish farm once you are not in danger of dying from starvation.

>Saw

This is a bait item. Most people have never used a saw or cut down a tree. You are not going to cut down a tree with a saw, it would take less time and energy to make a stone hatchet. Most trees on islands are no so much with the branches. Saws are great at cutting wood at precise points in a straight line. For felling a tree you want an axe.

>Boots

This is a funny one too but probably not bait. Walking without shoes is not nearly as dangerous or painful as most people think it is even on rocks. This is 10% a luxury item.

I did read it. You are dead wrong.

A FAK is not a trauma kit or a tactical medical kit. The picture is also clearly a store bought premade kit. The only antibotic is probably a topical one and you would be lucky if it was a cream tube instead of antibotic coated bandages.

Salt water will stop any infection from starting. If you already have an infection in progress you would still be fucked. The fact that you are arguing that makes me think you are not a paramedic.

I have used both an axe and a saw many times over, and I agree with you. The axe would be better, but there are none on the list which is why I went with a saw. I'm not looking to fell humongous trees... just mostly stuff that is 6" or less in diameter for shelter and firewood. A saw does make it MUCH easier (and faster) to collect dry firewood and building materials... and whenever you do get yourself established, it has very advanced uses pertaining to woodworking.
>>
>>721923687
>however island trees are almost all like coconut trees
You have no idea what you're talking about. This is like telling someone working for survival in canada that there's only maple trees.

>>721923561
Leave it on the beach for a couple days then. If you're in the jungle or on the coast of an island, EVERYTHING is going to be wet, or at least moist. Do you have any fucking idea how humid it is most of the time? Might be different elsewhere, but around here? If it's not in direct sunlight, it's going to be wet.
>>
>>721923813
Mirror is actually not that great. It is flat so the magnification is minimal and it would be a crap shoot if you aim correctly to signal.

The mirror gives you nothing that matches don't and you can free up that spot entirely if you can make a fire on your own. If you can't, stick with the matches.
>>
>>721923799

You can, but it's really, REALLY hard to do. Seriously, go out and try it next time you're on a hike. You don't get tools, unless you chose the knife or saw. Now make a usable axe. Most people won't be able to.

>>721924535
>Deserted islands are isolated and relatively small.
Hmm. This is actually a fair point. I was actually thinking about this from the frame of reference of having to survive in a climate and jungle like what you see on Hawai'i, because I lived there for a couple years and was out in the boonies plenty of times.

I'll have to look into the conditions on smaller islands.

I'll give my opinion on things. And this is under the assumption that you will get rescued.

Pot - Drinkable water is without question.
Knife - The most basic of all survival equipment.
FAK - Seawater does a good job of cleaning wounds, but there's some stuff in a FAK that will fight infection.
Hiking Boots - Take care of your fucking feet. They are so easy to fuck up and they carry your weight damn near 24 hours a day. If you can't walk, you're fucked. And I'd much rather be able to walk or run without a limp or some tree bark thongs breaking.

I was about to choose a compass, but the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Face the rising sun and left is north. I thought about Tarp or Tent, but you can make shelter out of some crazy shit. Tough choice between Rope and Hiking Boots, but you can make rope.
>>
>>721924814
You need a way to boil the water. You can use a solar still but without a clear catch you will be fighting yourself. It would be so slow you would be better making rain water catches and storing the water.

Pot also has all the other uses. It is a solid pick.

Saws are not meant to be used to cut horizontally to fell a tree. Every millimeter you cut into the tree adds serious weight and friction. The blade would be immovable without pushing mightily against the tree which is a massive calorie loss. Google a tree saw. They were two man tools and very long so that you could use your whole body to move the blade. A saw is a terrible tool for felling a tree.

The thing is a stone axe is made properly by firing a whole through a nice weighty stick, lodging the stone into the hole and then compressing the wood with lashing. This makes an axe you can swing full bodied and fuck up trees with. and this is with a fairly blunt edge.

>>721925137
The antibiotics in a household FAK will not stop an infection from anything other than a surface scratch which salt water can also do.

Hiking boots are the choice of people who have never been outside anywhere other than a city. Your feet have evolved with a millennia of walking barefoot. >making lashing
>felling trees

Nope. Any will do and when it breaks beyond recovery you can unlash it and stick a new one in.

>>picking the right type of wood

Nope, any will do. The handle will last years even with softer wood. Harder is better but takes longer to fire.

>firing a hole through a stick without damaging it

Nah. As long as you know the basic technique you are fine and there is always more wood. The basic technique is to chisel out a groove and then drop an ember into it and let it slowly burn through, you wil need many embers to do this. If it catches fire bury the head in the sand and start over.

>fitting sections of a tool together
What? You jam the rock in the hole. The lashing to tighten the wood around the rock head is optional but it helps

>making lashing
Jungle vines. Tearing leaves into strips. Again, it is a boon but not a requiement.

>Felling trees

That is what the axe is for. If you can't find a suitable handle that is already on the ground you can cut a tree down with just the head. It takes a lot longer but the caloric loss is low.

They are about a foot thick. The handsaw pictured is for cutting horizontal lumber with a vertical cut.

A horizontal cut on vertical wood would be a nightmare. Better to chisel or make an axe. Less time, less energy.

When I cut down trees while camping for the summer in the BC mountains I always use an axe. Once it is felled I use a debranching axe to clear the branches and then a small collapsible handsaw for length.

The only required tool for all three jobs is the first axe. In fact a hatchet could also do all three jobs. I would never use the clearing axe or the saw for any job it wasn't meant to do.

Massively time consuming method. Bow drill is still the best method for starting a fire from scratch. Best as in it is the most reliable and least intensive. Even if you don't have a bow you just rotate the spindle back and forth with your hands, takes longer but it is still the second best method.

Your argument is still that I know a lot about tools but at the same time I know nothing about tools.

Even if all the trees were at the extreme angle in your cherry picked picture, look how wide it is, you would have to climb halfway up the tree to even get a few teeth of movement and the tree would lurch violently back at you when the top separated.

You would be better finding a good stone and chiseling the bottom near the side that the tree extends out. It would fall under its own weight quickly and without much effort and then you could cut it as you like or just build a fire near it and let it begin to consume it after you harvested the fronds and bark.

Knife, first aid kit, pot, and boots. These are the most logical choices. Anything else is wrong.

They both provide shelter. Tarps are much stronger than tents. Tarps can be used to bindle and carry things that would ruin a tent. Tarps are completely waterproof, tents are not. Tarps can be used as containing walls for fish farms or pens. etc.

The tarp has utility. The tent has to be destroyed to serve multiple functions.

if there is a dense canopy:

rope
knife
Tarp
fishing rod

if no canopy swap fishing rod with sunscreen because I will burn in less than an hour

hmm anon. is assuming that the deserted island is in the tropics. Lots of deserted islands in cold climates as well. In which case, better shelter becomes much more important, as does the boots. Walking around on island made boots, in the snow wouldn't be much fun........

Knife
Matches
Pot
Tarp

I never said you knew a lot about tools, don't flatter yourself. You're suggesting chipping at a tree with a rock over using a saw, so you obviously don't.

>Extreme angle
I literally took the first pic I could find, here's a proper cherry you wouldn't need to saw horizontally at all.

Normal people would pick the tree that best fit their needs with minimal effort required, but if you wanna sit there for hours until your hands bleed, be my guest.

Water purifier, First aid kit, matches, and depending how much ammo i have then the hunting rifle. If less than 20 bullets than I'd choose the knife.

Insect repellent
First aid kit
Vitamins
Hand saw
I can just distill water naturally
Vitamins just in case there's little food
Hand saw for construction
Hammock and tent could be made
Insect repellent because fuck bugs

>I never said you knew a lot about tools
>I don't need your murican qq blabber, trying to impress anyone with your tool knowledge

Again a cherry picked image. Most grow straight up.

Even with all that aside it is still too thick to cut with a saw. You would have to score all the way around and there would still be uncut heart wood that could hold it together causing you to chisel.

OR

You could chisel it and let its own weight fell it

OR

you could make an axe in an afternoon and cut trees all day with the same energy it would take you to saw through one tree with a handsaw not to mention your blade is irreplaceable and would be too dull to cut after a few trees while the axe can be reworked and replaced.

Both options are exponentially better than the handsaw and free up a slot for something critical like vitamins to supplement your extremely limited diet or a first aid kit to treat all the wounds you would receive while fucking around with things you don't know about.

How the fuck do you think people cut down trees before they could smelt metals you fucking moron. You can chop down a tree with a sharpened rock.

Stoner here, why haven't you turned your flower into a vapeable liquid yet?

It's almost like you like losing money.

posted early.

100 miles south of the southern point of chile would be closer to the arctic circle than the subtropic line. 100 miles south of the northern point of chile would still be in the tropics.

I think it was a troll.

Assuming the fishing rod comes equipped with basic tackle.

> pot for cooking and water desalinization / purification.

> knife for obvious fucking reasons

> mirror for signaling and concentrating sunlight for fires.

> fishing rod for subsistence living.

Wait. Pic related
>>
Knife and pot are a given. Only an idiot would pass those up.
I probably go with vitamins because you should be able to procure calories, but not necessarily balanced nutrition.
I'm assuming the rifle comes with a moderate supply of ammo so that would be #4. It makes starting a fire easy. And hunting, self defense, signalling, even fishing make it rather versatile.
>>
Mirror, knife, first aid kit, tarp
Most of the other essentials you could make

I like how you left that last part out, or didn't you get it?
>Again a cherry picked image.
As stated in my fucking post, what's wrong with you?
