>>
>>721461238
Can't give a definite answer but probably because the English language has evolved so much over thousands of years so Leicester and other place names in the UK are just remnants of that bygone era... An example being the old English/Norse letter 'thorn' that kinda looked like a 'y' but the thorn fell out of fashion and now people think that 'ye' is pronounced 'yeee' rather than the correct pronunciation of 'thee'
>>
>>721461982
You're the ones who use the extra vowel for no reason. You can do the explaining.

Words are arbitrary, meaningless sounds used to express ideas. Spelling is arbitrary, meaningless scribbles used to represent arbitrary, meaningless sounds which are in turn used to represent chemical reactions in the brain of an animal on a rock in a mostly empty, merciless universe.

Ye is nominative second person plural, thee is oblique second person singular. The pairs are ye and you and thou and thee. Not a spelling error.

Well "colour" is pronounced more like "col-uh" than "col-or" as well as "colour" being an English evalution of the French word "Couleur" because y'know Normans and shit in the ten houndreds ... Nuff said

Amerifags have a lot of different accents depending on what part of the country they're from, and yes this would be true in some cases. It isn't typical of the country as a whole, though.

Sorry, misunderstood. Here's an excerpt from Wikipedia about it:

Most English place-names are either Old Norse or Anglo-Saxon but there is a scattering of Celtic names over the whole country. Other place-names are hybrids of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon elements. There are a high level of personal names within the place names, presumably the names of local landowners at the time of naming. In the north and east, there are many place names of Norse origin; similarly, these contain many personal names. In general, the Anglo-Saxon and Norse place names tend to be rather mundane in origin, the most common types being [personal name + settlement/farm/place] or [type of farm + farm/settlement] (almost all towns ending in -wich, -ton, -ham, -by, -thorpe, -stoke/stock are of these types).

>Why is colour spelt "color" in America?
Because of Noah Webster (he of the amazingly dumbed-down dictionary with E-Z spellings for immigrants).
For a long time English was a second language in the US. You had whole states inhabited by European migrants who used their own language rather than the more difficult English. Swedes in Minnesota, French in Lousiana, Spanish in the West.
Webster sought to make English more regular, like most European languages. He failed, of course, but most Americans (being as parochial and isolationist as they are) are unaware that they sound and write like 10-year olds.

Non-rhotic basically means not pronouncing Rs except before vowels. Most of England is like that. The way I speak, "sore" and "saw" sound the same. I pronounce "Worcester" wuss-tuh.

The name comes from Leadecestere, meaning "Town of King Lear built on an old Roman fort". It's listed in the Domesday Book as "Ledecestere" so you can see how generations of people got sick of putting two "s" sounds in the same word. The result was that the modern pronunciation predominated even though the spelling didn't change.

Fucking Coventry? Coventry isn't only the ugliest piece of shit you can find in the UK, there's also fucking nothing to do apart from visiting that one car museum.

The most visited attraction in Coventry is the Job Centre.

How the hell do you pronounce this? It's Welsh, isn't it?
>>

london's a shithole. So's the rest of the south.

try the north, or scotland, if you dont want to be surrounded by cunts. Manchester and Leeds are fairly ok cities nowadays, Edinburgh and Glasgow too (except one or two really shitty areas, but all cities have those)

It isn't. Sandniggers, niggers, Chavs, rich cunts, hipsters, Russians, Poles, radical misandrist feminists, and the worst, most selfish, egostistical aspects of humans given full sanction and approval.
Plus fuck Elephant and Castle roundabout. What the actual fuck.

like, would genuinely be surprised to find out you were any older than 19 (you'll note this is not an offensively low estimate, but still suggests immaturity)
>>

Bournemouth and Truro are alright. Plymouth is nice, but a little more pricey.
Depends if you prefer cities or more rural areas.
>>
>>721476126

>>
>>721476226
Yet, it's got more going on the most UK cities. If it weren't for the horrendous PM2.5 concentrations, I'd probably move there. I've got enough money so I wouldn't have to socialise with subhuman scum.
>>
>>721461238

Because it is still pronounced like its Anglo-Saxon origins. For Anglo-Saxon names, nouns ending in -ster indicates it is a farm of some sort. Leicester probably started off as farmland named after a family called 'Leice' or possibly in conjunction with 'leigh' which is a 'woodland clearing'. It could well have originally been Leigh-ster.
>>
>>721476343
I like cities, but they don't have to be enormous. I live in Seattle, which I honestly like a lot, but any larger and denser would get on my nerves. I would want to an hero if I had to live in New York or Los Angeles. London is the only truly huge city over there though, isn't it?
>>
>>721462629

Did you just call Plymouth nice!? That place is the absolute armpit of Britain in both location and the fact that it's a shit hole! I grew up near there in Saltash (Town on the Cornish side of the river) so i'd know.

London has around 11 million last time I checked, the next greatest urban areas are something like Birmingham and Manchester, with around 2 mil each.
>>
>>721476586

Its by far the biggest, size accounts vary because people argue on whether to include the endless miles of suburbs on the outskirts. Still smaller than Los Angeles though.
>>
>>721462215
The only reason is still only one language is because of Webster. We agree on spellings to maintain the language.

This is a nice size for a metro area in my opinion. Cosmopolitan, guaranteed plenty to do, but not overwhelming.
>>
>>721476660
So long as you steer clear of Saltram, Alamien and Pilemere you're alright. Admittedly that is most of Saltash though
>>
>>721476501
You may not have to socialise with them but that's not the point. That's the thing with London, unless you live in a super rich enclave like Dulwich, Kensington, Chelsea, etc; you will be mixing with these fuckers on a daily basis on the streets, all the time.
You can't get away from the fuckers.

It's hard to recommend a nice city tbh, I do really like Plymouth, but it's not all that big, it's quiet in comparison to most cities. As a general rule i'd say avoid the midlands, and most of the south.

Don't really care what your political persuasion is, but I lived in London for six years. I wouldn't go back unless you had a gun to my head. Now live in Wales where the pace of life is relaxed, people are friendly (you know, not rude, pushy cunts with personality disorders of various types) and I get to mountain bike in quality trails those in the south-east of England have to travel all the way down the fucking M4 for three for. All on my back door.

Oh shit the Plymouth Uni and Peranporth guy and myself the one who stood on the bee and hates Plymouth are the same person!

Yeah last time I went back was over Christmas when I went home. I suppose it's improving somewhat with Brenton bus station closing etc. Do you enjoy watching the edgy emo kids hang around the sundial or skating on that seating area bit on royal parade? Or are they gone now? Haven't spend much time in Plymouth lately
>>
>>721478715
Haha shit dude.
Nah the edgy kids hang around with the homeless near the underpass, and top of Armada street.
Do have to laugh though, they always try to show-off on their skateboards, and end up flat on their faces most of the time.
>>
>>721479130
Moved on then. There's one kid from my old year group who still wants to be an edgy skater kid and I think he goes near the hoe to become the next Tony Hawk.

Where are you from originally? Not local?

I'm also the Saltash guy. Was born in Derriford hospital but lived in Saltash my entire life. Went to St Stephens primary school, then onto Saltash.net (gay as fuck name) etc but am now studying at Bournemouth Uni
>>
>>721479793
You hearing about Celeste Smith? She was in my year at school and I sort of but just barely knew her
>>

Almost ended up at Bournemouth myself, purely for the academic excellence scholarship money.
I've heard my flatmates talking about here, but I don't really pay much attention to local news.
I had a few friends go St Stephens there, did you know Zarah Hinton?
>>
>>721480636
Yeah, I'm getting that £1500 as I came away from college with a D* D* D and it's pretty sweet as well as a nice Uni.

A Zarah rings a bell but never knew anyone by that name personally then again I was the exact opposite of popular back in school. Probably why I ended up on /b/. She a room mate or something?
>>
>>721481056
What do you study now?
Zarah went to the primary school, but later moved and came to Fowey, havn't seen her in years, used to be my best friend for a time.

Doing computing with games development. One of my roommates does security, and she seems to like it a lot, so why not go for it. I'm thinking of switching to robotics myself, or maybe doing a masters in robotics.

She doesn't have any internet presence unfortunately, only way i'd ever see her again is if I happen to bump into her in person.

Atleast it's not JavaScript.

>>721470970
"aluminium" is fine. Also its "glin" anyways
>>
>>721482462
Don't say that word! I'm learning a bit of JavaScript now for my web dev unit and am about to get onto programming with it rather than theory.

That is the same with Java which is what I use for application programming (on the Eclipse launcher). I can create most things without help and I have people who can help me when I need it but Google pulled me through the first couple of weeks. Just change a few variables here and method names there and presto your own 'totally original and not plagiarised' program is complete
>>
>>721482836
Oho you have no idea what you're in for. Done JavaScript in college and just finished my module on it.
Just keep things as simple as you can, ALWAYS comment, and test constantly. I used object arrays for my last project, a single missing comma in 1000+ lines of code will prevent the whole thing from loading, so make sure you test every few lines.
Use something like bit bucket as well, saved my ass a few times.

I'm glad I didn't go BU, I dont like theory too much myself, prefer to learn as I go.
>>
>>721483231
Yeah, the way they do their web dev unit is shit.. Uses the 'Scrum' method if you've heard of it. Was meant to be learning JavaScript but instead had to do things like calculate the streaming requirements of an uncompressed cd quality audio file before learning to program in JS...

You just multiply frequency by bit rate depth and number of audio channels btw since I had to learn that pointless shite.

I actually enjoy being at BU though as it's a nice place, good campus and my lecturer for relational databases was an absolute king of memes!
>>
>>721483652
If you plan on getting hired into webdev scrum isn't too bad to learn I guess. We don't to anything like that here though which is a bit of a shame.
Did agile in college though so I guess thats somthing.
Met my artificial life lecturer last week, and the guy was an absolute shitlord.
Kept making jokes about people who think there are more than two genders, and while simulating a panicking crowd, referred to all the 'people' as women, because they where useless at exiting a room. Love that guy.

You have a linkedin?
>>
>>721484026
I recently met Systems Analysis and Design lecturer and I swear he sounds exactly like John Cleese so his lectures are great!

No I don't since I've needed to be on there or anything. fb is the only social media I have even I have to sell my soul to them to be on there...
>>
>>721484366
Really recommend getting one. It's the best way to find jobs and placements in IT.
I imagine they'll bring it up to you on your course at some point.
>>
>>721484636
Perhaps? My third year for Uni is a placement year and they have people who help you find work so i'd make a few connections that way but one day when I have things that I could show off I might make one
>>
>>721484879
I don't really have anything myself yet, but I really recommend it. WordPress portfolios go a long way too.
Have a lecture each week for the next 3 about placements, really glad I turned up to them. I have a 9AM today though so i'm going to bed. Goodnight bro.
>>
>>721485537
Not in until 12, myself but goodnight. Good luck on the rest of your course!

A quick google aaaaaand

The verb to spell most commonly means to write or name the letters that form a word in correct sequence.

To spell is one of those verbs with both an irregular form and a regular form. (See the table below for some others.) The past tense and the past participle can be written as either spelled or spelt. However, they are not interchangeable, especially in the US.
>Americans Demand Spelled
In America, spelled dominates. The use of spelt as the past tense or past participle of to spell is considered a spelling mistake by many. It will certainly annoy a fair proportion of your readers.
>Brits Prefer Spelt
Outside America, spelt is more common, but spelled is generally accepted. (This is almost certainly a result of American influence spreading.)
