make a github, have a JS side project, follow and talk to people on twitter. it can kind of difficult if you're cold applying, but you can safely reapply every 6 months.

Best tip I can have is have a good resume with links to open source projects.

I'm like 7 levels below Satya. I have a manager, he has a manager, etc. We all work together, not really bossing around. It's chill
>>
>>720994375
Because people who work at Microsoft do it so that they can tell everyone they work at a company they've heard of while simultaneously not having to be an actually productive member of their department. Well, okay, that's only true of people who stay at Microsoft over three years; there are idealistic new graduates every year who think Microsoft's the shit and run to work for them only to realize that Microsoft actually is the shit and run away to another equally well-paid job.

The internship totally depends on the company. Some are super relaxed and let you pick some of your own work, others give you a strict goal for the summer. You usually get a mentor to guide you, but basically YMMV

What do you mean following people on Twitter? Just to see if anyone's hiring? Or actually start talking and posting on other developers pages?

Thanks again for the advice. Very helpful. I recently turned down a job with Amazon because I hate java and I would've had to move across country. How did your interview go? Like a three panel driving session or easy going?

Is this your first job out of college? How does it feel to be in a cushy job meant to retire in? Do you work <40 hrs a week? Do you feel like you're actually learning anything? Do you think that once you go to a real company it will be tough to adjust?

What type of stuff do you work on (backend, web?)
>>
>>720994887
I use it a decent amount. I don't like it. The whole thing is a rewrite provides very little return for a ton of work. See https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2000/04/06/things-you-should-never-do-part-i/

>>720994953
I learn a ton from following devs on twitter. Most JS people on twitter are super helpful and friendly. I recommend following the React page and just going from the recommendations there. Just follow and learn.

My interview had 3 stages: phone interview (30 min), college campus interview (30 min), on site (6 hours).

Feels weird. I put in a ton of effort but you can see some people are just riding it out.
I work about 50 hours a week between the office, home and commuting. Not because I have to, I'm just passionate about what I do.
I'm not learning much technically, and I'm by far the best frontend dev on my team. I'm learning how to work on a team and how to teach though.
Shouldn't be too hard to adjust. I like the hackathon scenario better anyway

I work on frontend web dev mostly (TypeScript + React and some Angular). Some backend too

You Amazon Anon?
>>
>>720997372

Welcome to the real world. I joined an acquisition that still runs mostly on PHP. Almost all of the old devs have left either because we fired them or because they were unhappy about the changes. We have like two of these incompetent fuckers left, one of which is a huge asshole who will forever defend PHP and his shitty design choices.

Luckily none of his shit ever works and management is pretty much fed up with him. They only keep him around for his knowledge of the legacy systems, but most of the new hires have caught up by now so his usefulness is quickly running out.

In the meantime we're slowly rewriting everything in Java with proper tests, continuous deployment, and leveraging AWS where we can.

These assfucks built a rube-goldberg machine using crons and queues in database tables to do async work, so we're re-doing all that using workflow engines.

It's fun though, I get to live in New York and get paid enough to enjoy it. My gf and I go out to dinner several times a week, guzzle globs of wine and cocktails, and travel when we can. It's pretty sweet.
>>
>>720997490

>>720997802

Does any of your work go into amazon.com itself?
>>
>>720997973

Why do you want to know?
>>
>>720998113

I shop there and I've always suspected what they tell their customers RE shipping dates, when shit will ship, how much of an item they have left in stock etc was all highly misleading.

I just wonder why you would even go through the trouble of coding that shit if it's just something your backend servers vomit up merely to _appear_ useful.
>>
>>720998313

Well I'm not in retail, so I really wouldn't know. What I can tell you though is that Amazon has a shit ton of stuff in stock across many warehouses. They also sell a lot of stuff through third-party merchants whose inventory they don't control.

So I imagine it's a pretty damn hard problem to get an accurate, up-to-date estimate of how many jars of aloe-vera pina colada flavored lube you have left in stock, and how quickly you can get a Mexican person to stick it in a box.

As for shipping, Amazon relies on other companies to get your shit to you, and how quickly they can do that is out of Amazon's control.

Amazon is trying to do better here though. We already use robots in our warehouses to move racks full of products around the floor while the order pickers stay in one place. That way to fill an order, we can just move the item to the picker, have them grab it, and then move the rack back onto the floor. We can queue up racks at the picker to keep them busy and not have them waste time walking around.

There's some interesting math involved there on how many robots you need per picker, and how to distribute your products across racks. Turns out that you want to spread products across as many racks as possible instead of putting all jars of lube on the same rack. That way one order of lube doesn't block another one being fulfilled at the same time.
>>
>>720993830
isn't con for comic con or convention?
>>
>>720998976

It's con on dos/windows systems. Maybe comes from CP/M? Unix/linux uses 'term' or 'terminal'.
>>
>>720998737

Well, I just find it....Highly convenient...That an item I'm after can go from having six of it in stock, to having one, to having four, all in the space of twenty-four hours. Surely you can see how that looks? Especially if it is perpetually "Only x left in stock, order soon!". It comes off as the system having been deliberately coded to have a pokerface when it comes to inventory availability. At that point your customers will inherently begin to mistrust it, and suddenly its usefulness (except in pissing people off) is absolutely nil, so you may as well have never coded it.

But I'm guessing you're far removed from all that shit, huh?
>>
>>720991727
How much time do you spend each day discussing how much Apple software designers suck each other's dicks?
>>
>>720999291
