not from tassie. mainlander scum

ok here is my tale:

>be backpacking around west coast
>catching bus from launceston to strahan
>at cradle mountain switch to a smaller bus.
>about 4 people on bus
>banter with bus driver throughout the drive, i mention that i don't know anyone or have accommodation and i'm just winging it as i go
>planning on staying a few nights in strahan, then one in queenstown en route to hobart
>at queenstown stop a girl approaches me and gives me her number
"hey i heard you don't have somewhere to stay. me and my partner have a spare bed and you're welcome to stay with us"
>kinda weird, literally hadn't spoken a word to this girl, but hey, sweet, free accommodation

>sitting in cafe eating shitty breakfast when she and bf come to meet me
>still halfway through my meal, he interrupts me and says "you must very very tired, you should put your feet up"
>ummm ok. leave breakfast unfinished.
>walk back through the streets to their place

so i don't know how familiar you are with queenstown. it is the sad result of the end of a mining boom. it is literally a ghost town
you know those american moving with towns with tumbleweeds? like that

>walking up their street, right on the edge of town
>theirs is one of the last houses
>we pass about 4 inhabited houses the whole walk - everything else is abandoned. as in, boarded up, windows smashed etc
>feeling a bit uncomfortable walking out of town towards the mountains with two strangers but hey i've had crazier travel adventures
>we reach their house and they invite me inside

There's a small town not far from there called Ruby. My grandfather said that if you had a choice of living there or living in Hell, you'd pick hell. Mining has contaminated the entire town with sulphur. A small cut will fester in 20 minutes. A serious wound could nearly kill you.

>confused as to why they sleep in the living room
>there's a closed mystery door that they won't acknowledge
>they show me around the place
>fucked derelict as shit, nails on the floor
>in the kitchen the guy turns to me and says "this is your home now"
ohshit.jpg
>feeling kinda weirded out.
i really can't convey how strange these people were. they didn't speak unless i spoke to them and they spoke so. slowly. it. was. like. speaking. to. a. wall. i was starting to feel super uncomfortable
>in living room, i look over the hanging sheets at their bed
>"hey um, why do you guys have an axe there?"
>they pause and look at each other. "camping"
>they have no furniture guys. there sure as fuck wasn't any camping gear.

>ask "hey um, what's this?"
>the guy tells me to open it
>he said it in the creepiest way though. really intense eye contact
>open the knife, it's a double blade serrated knife. i don't even know what you'd use it for. the only time i've seen blades like that is in butchers or people out hunting
>"so, why do you have this?"
>no reply
>ok really flipping my shit now
>suggest we go to the supermarket, get myself the fuck back into town
>as we leave the house i notice there are no bins
>apparently someone stole their bins
>sure, usually that's a funny story
>this is a town of like 1000 people. mystery bin stealing isn't normal
>ask them what they do with their trash.
>they look at each other and start walking.

oh i forgot something!
when i first arrived and i still wasn't totally freaked out, i offered to take them out to dinner at the one pub in town as a thank you
>they look at each other really strangely
>no. we thought we'd stay in tonight.
innocuous on its own but in the whole context weirded me out. plus who says no to getting shouted a free meal?

ok back to the story

>ok so i'm thinking we'll be walking back to town down the creepy abandoned streets we came up. sure, they're creepy, but they're increasingly inhabited the closer to town we go
>nope
>they make to walk up the mountain
>it is away from town
>wat
>"hey isn't town back that way?"
>"yeahh. i thought we could go exploring"
>"ummm nahh i'm really hungry let's go in to town"
>guy: "we've never been here before, come on, it'll be fun"
>yolo it and follow them for like 20 meters
>guy: "where was it?"
>girl: "i think it's up this way"
>omg nope nope nope
>nope the fuck out of there
>go and get my stuff

hopefully no one else is as much of an idiot as i

seriously don't go home with strangers who pick you up from the bus stop.
>>
>>720784563
Common sense suggests something bizarre was going on there. They had no furniture and no visible possessions except weapons. They had a locked room they wouldn't even acknowledge was there. They wanted you to go with them to an abandoned spot on a mountain, and discussed "the spot" immediately after saying they'd never gone there before.

Either they were trying to freak you out, or you were next. The whole thing is like an episode of Criminal Minds, ffs.
>>
>>720784563
Well assuming you haven't freaked yourself out, then it does sound pretty creepy. It man not be sinister but it does sound weird. If someone ever goes missing in the area, this could give them an early lead
>>
>>720784742
yeah i hadn't remembered the thing about the "spot" up the mountain until i was writing it out just then.
after the whole thing i was in like a cold sweat and shaking for hours

maybe i'll do like an anonymous tip :s
the main thing is they were probably just weird people and i made it all seem worse in my head. i don't want to get innocent people in trouble

but holy shit it felt weird.
>>
Anyone in here from Hobart?
>>
>>720785096
Yeah maan
>>
>>720784947
Can you remember the road you were walking on to go to the spot? You should actually have a look to see if there's even a restaurant or supermarket or anything up that road. If there's not, that's pretty solid reason to believe that something fucked was about to go down
>>
>>720784947
If they're innocent people, they don't have anything to worry about.

If they're killing backpackers, you could be the one who stops that.

Think it over.

well one of the weird things was that even though they'd lived there for 4 months they literally know nothing about the town. not only did no one know them (in a town of 1000), but they knew nothing about the tourist attractions etc

so i insisted that i really wanted to go to the mining tour, made them turn around and walk back with me (i say with, because i made sure i walked abreast with them, not with them behind me)

then i made up a bs excuse that the mining tour is all day and i wanted my coat and shit. took my bag with me a cheesed it the fuck out of there

no busses out of the town until the next morning, no other means of transport aside from hitch-hiking

stayed in the "managers suite" at the only pub. there were only two rooms - the dorm or the suite
decided fuck this and chose the suite
actually a really beautiful place - the pub dates from the town's hey-day in like 1880s
i had almost a whole floor to myself with a wrap around balcony and shit. i legit didn't leave the suite until morning, except when i went downstairs to order food and drinks and bring them back upstairs
>>
>>720788018
of course the balcony was rotting and i couldn't stand on half of it bc of the risk of falling through, and there was a creepy cupboard that i couldn't lock from the outside that communicated up into the roof

other than that it was lovely though
