You do get privacy since classes take up chunks of your day and odds are you don't have classes at the exact same time. If you want to be alone there's a ton of places to go around campus (at least here anyways). It's not awful it's a nice bonding experience and teaches you how to live with roommates later on in life. Our campus is 8,556 acres so we have classes on campus that are 30 minute walks away, fortunately I board to my classes my roommate has to make walks like that so he leave 45 mins early to classes. We'll have classes scattered in random buildings around campus you just have to hope you got classes close to your dorm. Surprised to see Eurofags so dumbfounded by American style dorming, I thought it was similar over there (assuming you're European, correct me if I'm wrong). The 50k a year is for a lot more than just "room and board" though (which is what we refer to as the housing fee here) we also get a card with around 1800$ on it that lets us purchase meals across campus every semester. It also happens to be one of the biggest colleges in America. My major is computer engineering, at Penn the courses are a mixture of both Electrical Engineering and Computer Science classes.

IT is very, very similar to what a computer engineer would be studying, in fact we just took down our IT program and integrated it into our School of Engineering. If you enjoy the hands-on work of dealing with hardware: robotics, arduinos, and raspberry pi's then electrical engineer would be great. If you enjoy more so the coding and development of programs via whatever language you're learning then comp sci would also be a good root. Both pays are similar and relatively well (around 90k starting). Though if you want to learn both you can apply one onto another creating AI's, super computers. There all very similar though. Learn what projects you can do with each major it gives a better idea of what you want.

Eurofag here (Scotty fag actually). When I went to uni I paid £1500 a year tuition and then we got a loan of about £3000 from the govermnent a year that we could put towards rent. In the first year we stayed in a halls of residence (like your dorms but singe rooms, each one with a private bathroom). In the second and third years we all rent a house locally with about 3-4 people in each one. I left uni with about £15k of debt ($20k US) .

After uni I changed my career plan and retrained to be an airline pilot, that cost about £130k ($170k US) for a 18 month course. Totally different to university but finishing in a much better job.
