They're not technically "bad" they're just $100 movements that get put in often wildly overpriced watches by the big conglomerates Swatch, Richemont, etc. in the Swiss brands they bought after the Quartz Crisis killed off 90% of the Swiss watchmaking industry.

ETA movements are mass produced and regulated by machine and their entire design is built around this fact. They use cocks instead of bridges, regulators instead of free-sprung balances, the their teeth on the gears are often poorly cut, flat hairsprings (i.e. no Breguet-style overcoils), cam-actuated instead of column wheel chronographs, and other cheapness factors. They're just not good value propositions, generally aren't super accurate outside of higher brands like Breitling and Omega that modify them, and you get a boring, generic movement that is indestinguishable from every other assholes watch.
