In any event, yes, there are groups like SMART recovery and Rational Recovery, but good luck finding meetings if you don't live in a decent sized city.

The best recovery in terms of people that can help you is in AA. It's that way because the meetings are free and available everywhere. If you can swallow your pride and keep your ego in check about the "Oh fuck they sometimes talk about god" thing then you'll be fine. Recovery is mainly about keeping your ego in check in the first place.

Because the "X anonymous" is the same program no matter what is in place of the X. It's the same 12 steps which originated in the original Alcoholics Anonymous - just applied to different addictions. And the original 12 steps came out of the Oxford Group, which was a Christian group popular in the early 1900's, hence the religious overtones. It's since evolved past that, however.

I'm about 3 weeks clean (heroin/cocaine/crack/alcohol/amphetamines). I've been through rehab, been to AA/NA meetings hundreds of times. They always become a shitfest of junkies scheming together to get high. Longest I've gone sober is 2 years since I began using.

I'm going to prison for a year in 4 days, and I know I'm going to get high there cause they don't offer these programs. How do I stay clean when I get out? What are the best ways to stay sober in the initial stages. I'm not sociable and prefer to spend time alone unless I'm high/drunk so I'm reluctant to participate in group activities. I just can't motivate myself to participate so I always become demotivated and just go back to getting high or drunk.

Not sure if my dad would have been considered an alcoholic by normal AA standards, but he had a problem with it. He'd drink every evening, usually being pretty fucking drunk by the end of the day. My mother was threatening divorce for quite a while if he didn't stop. I once saw him hide a bottle of beer just as he came home from the store, shocked the shit out of me. So yeah, he had a problem with alcohol, but he got over it, and now has a pretty decent relationship with alcohol. He'll drink a bit in socials settings, or have a few glasses of wine with my mom on the weekends.

I've been sober going on two years. I was drinking a fifth of skol a day. It would take me having to drink half a pint just to have edgy of vodka just to have energy to brush just teeth.

I now am sober 90% percent of the time. The other ten is social gatherings and new years. Probably drank about six times in 2016. Always limit myself to one pint and nothing more or anything else.

I've got a friend who is clearly headed down the path of drug addiction and I'm about sick and tired of him. I'm underweight and I had been prescribed a drug called dronabinol which is synthetic THC. I had given said friend a couple to try a long time ago. I kept the pills in the bottom drawer in my room and rarely actually took them. One day when I check, I come to find out 3/4ths of the bottle of pills are gone. That started my suspicion (we're in a band in which he plays bass and I play keyboard which is a reason he comes over often) Fast forward to many months later and he has done all sorts of drugs with bad influences. He and some dumbass friend of his broke into some apartment complex under construction and drank like idiots until they passed out. They get stopped by police, dumb friend is 17 so they let him go, but drug addict friend is just the right age, 18 years old. He gets sent to jail and spends time there for a good 5 months. During this time he writes to me talking about how stupid he was and how he's gonna change and how we're getting the band back together and so on. He gets out, and for some time he came we jammed we made a few songs, recorded them, etcetera. This is the most recent. When I had a doctor's some time back while he was still in jail, I got a refill on the prescription. 90 pills in a bottle. I placed it in the bottom drawer as always and purposely decided to take 0 of them to see if they decrease because I had started having my suspicions again. There's certain days in which I work so he comes and jams with my brother only instead. When I'm there I make sure he doesn't stay in my room by himself because of said suspicions. Well anyway time goes by, he starts hanging out with bad influences again. I get a strong feeling he'd been stealing them so I check the 90 pills bottle and there are about 30 left give or take. That seriously pissed me off. I'm not sure what to do now. Apologize about the poor grammar and the run-ons.

ok enough spiritual talk. last speed use was 1989. never went to meetings. found out about them in 2001 or so, learned a lot, but didnt need them to kick anything. have had therapy, psychedelics, meditation. i still feel that 12 step has profound depths. however, i have also seen a lot of people die from alcohol, some from drugs, and sometimes its hard to stay positive. i work in mental health/dual diagnosis, so ive seen the worst. but also some beauty. homeless woman, shooting up speed every day, prostituting herself, night terrors every time she went to jail w/o her psych meds. now c/s 9 years or so. iraq war vet, marine sniper, horrible ptsd, used to be angry all the time, calls me his honorary gunnery sergeant, and his brother from another mother (hes black im white). heavily using schizophrenic, now married with a kid, youd never guess. its a fucking mystery who makes it and who doesnt, but i am grateful

not OP - but the 12 Step methods definitely look religious, and part of the problem is that they were written in the 50s and shit, but Christians.

So some of the softer concepts like having a "higher power" didn't work with people. God was easier for them to deal with, and something they were all familiar with.

Personally, I dislike the praying in AA, but w/e. I mostly go to NA which has less of that. Still talks about GOD, but it's not saying the Our Father at the end of each meeting. I know it shouldn't matter, but it does. I mean - if I started doing jewish prayers at a meeting i run they would all freak the fuck out.

You're right about RR - you can still buy the book though. SMART Recovery is still around and mostly based on cognitive behavioral therapy and psychoeducation regarding dealing with triggers and cravings, but it's hard to fin meetings.

I find drug addicts kind of have a stigma against alcoholics and vice versa. Probably because alcohol is legal and drugs aren't so if you're doing drugs, you're seen as some kind of sleazy criminal whereas if you're an alcoholic, you've just had a little too much and need to be put back into perspective.
But yeah it's kinda fucked. I find that both groups push total abstinence which is required for drugs since you can't consume it without breaking the law, but alcohol. That's more of a "I've got a me problem" more than "I've got a drinking problem".
Alcohol doesn't make you a violent retard, it's just the vehicle that allows you to express what you keep suppressed. That's my whole take on it.

I feel like that applies to many drugs as well. As radical as this sounds, and this comes from someone who very rarely drinks, smokes pot, and takes acid, the best solution would appear to be the legalization or decriminalization of all drugs like Portugal has done.

Go to the doctors get some anti anxiety or probably better advice anti psycotics. Quetiapine/seroquel will reduce the anxiety and shakes you will get.
Trust me I've been there. Just be hesitant on getting benzos ans they will become your new drink. Safer with an anti psycotic. May only need to take for a month or so. Will help you sleep as well.
