Kind of ironic. Historically, republican doctrine for a long time was protectionist economics, with high import tax, pretty much what Trump is planning to do and what China is still doing. This works well in a country with an underdeveloped marked in which no single corporation (or select few) have control of a market. As the economy grows, growth is further stimulated by loosening regulations and import tax (as is happening in China now), but that's not just Republican doctrine, it's neoliberal doctrine. Imposing strong import taxes and being protectionist in the current American climate is full blown retarded. That said, some regulations must apply because a fully free market is pretty much non-existent. We don't allow child labor anymore, and we don't dispose of nuclear waste in the sewers, for instance, and no one is questioning the validity of those regulations. Net neutrality is comparable: it's necessary to protect the consumer.

This simply isn't true. In the early days of the US, republicans were very much in favor of protectionism. Moreover, the abolishment of Slavery, the single biggest government regulations on the 'free' market ever, was instated by a republican.
