the translator really did an amazing job, I've read some other English translations of Baudelaire, but McGowan really managed to keep the meter and rhyme without distorting the literal meaning much at all
Often, when bored, the sailors of the crew
Trap albatross, the great birds of the seas,
Mild travelers escorting in the blue
Ships gliding on the ocean's mysteries.
And when the sailors have them on the planks,
Hurt and distraught, these kings of all outdoors
Piteously let trail along their flanks
Their great white wings, dragging like useless oars.
This voyager, how comical and weak!
Once handsome, how unseemly and inept!
One sailor pokes a pipe into his beak,
Another mocks the flier's hobbled step.
The Poet is a kinsman in the clouds
Who scoffs at archers, loves a stormy day;
But on the ground, among the hooting crowds,
He cannot walk, his wings are in the way.

compare to Aggeler's translation, which sacrifices both the rhyme and meter, without really benefiting from being "verbum pro verbo"
Often, to amuse themselves, the men of a crew
Catch albatrosses, those vast sea birds
That indolently follow a ship
As it glides over the deep, briny sea.
Scarcely have they placed them on the deck
Than these kings of the sky, clumsy, ashamed,
Pathetically let their great white wings
Drag beside them like oars.
That winged voyager, how weak and gauche he is,
So beautiful before, now comic and ugly!
One man worries his beak with a stubby clay pipe;
Another limps, mimics the cripple who once flew!
The poet resembles this prince of cloud and sky
Who frequents the tempest and laughs at the bowman;
When exiled on the earth, the butt of hoots and jeers,
His giant wings prevent him from walking.
eh, not the right place for discussing poetry, I guess
baaaah I need to go to sleep. Gnight everyone, happy reading Sunshine.

We're not too smart.
>>719461604
Roll trips and we'll think about it.
>>719462587
goodnight! sweet dreams!
>>719462605
I don't think you need to be too smart to appreciate verse
>>719462542
I'd like to get into it, as an echo of the fascinating stuff we used to get into. But I'm busy feeding myself, and my opinion is probably boorish
>>719463085
nothing wrong with sharing your opinion, even if it's crude or underdeveloped
that's one of the best things about art, literature, poetry - how something makes you feels, or the thoughts it evokes within you are far more important than being "correct"

This is gay fur
>>719461551
Yeah, I feel that.
This instance is quite a bit easier on the ear, and easier to understand as well, bar the line "a kinsman in the clouds".
I feel the statement of the poet as well, something I can relate to -- not as a poet but as someone mostly unable to relinquish a need for literal precision even in everyday chat. It's strange how the extremes can end up looking alike
>>719465230
ok lets go over this one more time
the "straight" and "gay" in s and g fur refer not necessarily to the content of the threads, but to the intended demographic - straight or gay men
hence lesbians go in s/fur, but not in g/fur
>>>>trash
my trips cast this thread to the shadow realm

hey
>>719466948
Hi.
How's your week been, what's going on?
>>719467016
usual
>>719465307
yeah that line is just equating the poet with the albatross, they are 'kin', and thus the reader transfers the empathy built in the first three stanzas for the albatross to the poet in the last stanza
I really think it's a rather insightful poem - society can take aspects of a person that in most situations should be considered good or noble traits - a poetic mind, or as you say a desire for precision - and instead use them as features to ostracize or ridicule
at least that's what I get from it, though I'm sure I'm projecting my own personal issues with social anxiety onto it
>>719466796
heya
>>719467068
I see. Well, it's good to see you anyway.
>>719467182
Hey Sunshine. How's your night?
>>719467268
pff
>>719467268
pretty uneventful
hoping I'll get some sleep tonight, didn't sleep at all last night and only caught a couple hours during a nap today
I want to boop her nose.
>>719467402
I'm serious.
>>719467410
I hope you'll sleep tonight too. Having shit sleep and taking naps kind of sucks
>>719467268
Where's the rest?!
>>719467735
hello boop
>>719467766
thanks, yeah, insomnia in general is rarely fun
>>719467952
Hello friendo, how is life?
>>719468134
pretty good, really
I hope you can say the same?
>>719468318
I'm doing fine. Just really tired, my friends (who have never played) wanted to start a D&D campaign. We are still in character creation.
>>719468521
Ha! Yeah character creation can take forever. I'd say it's worth it though if you have a good campaign ready to explore
I hope you have an experienced dm, or at least a good group of friends, the game can be more of a chore if it isn't really engaging
>>719467182
Sad to hear about the anxiety. Everyone's got a struggle of some kind.
Thanks for reminding me I can still enjoy literature even just a tad.
>>719468929
I'm the DM for them but its taken three days and we aren't half way done. We *just* finished selecting classes for them.
>>719469149
Totally crashing this conversation, anyways. Sounds cool, whats the class lineup lookin' like?
>>719469149
What ruleset are y'all using?
>>719469396
We have 2 paladins, a sorcerer, a rogue, and an undecided.
>>719469553
Love me some paladins. Probably because my most succesful, atleast by RP standards, 3.5 character ever was a sorcadin. So i've kept a soft spot for both classes even when i left DND behind. Is multiclassing in fifth ed still a thing?
>>719469625
Oh I don't really know 5e, I only ever played 3.5e
wizards OP OP!!
>>719469818
Yeah but it's complicated.
>>719469826
They've been dialed back a bit to balance them out.
>>719470054
source?
>>719470141
I should hope so, they were just stupidly better than every other class in most cases, especially at high levels
>>719470348
Yeah. Also most spells have been really dialed down. It's like trying to tickle an enemy to death.
>>719470265
No idea sorry. Was posted here not too long ago
