If you want a real and honest answer, if you're feeling withdrawal symptoms when you stop or if you frequent blacking out, you should find a Detox center. Doesn't matter how old you are, alcohol withdrawals are the only drug/drink withdrawals that can actually kill you besides benzos (xanax, etc.)
Alcoholism/addiction in general is more of a mental problem than a physical one. But the physical addiction to whatever your drink/drug of choice is, has to be the first thing to go.

I'm coming up on a year clean & sober from alcohol and heroin myself.

I'm the guy you responded to. Don't go to the doc unless you are literally freaking out, but even then, just take a few drinks and you'll be fine. The doctor will just discover you aren't that severe of an alcoholic, they'll take bloodwork, and give you vitamins. Then they'll tell you to cut back slowly if you have to. Once you've got a week or two under your belt you'll start feeling better physically. Immediately after you're feeling better, start working hard to fix whatever psychological or financial issues that drove you to self-medicate to begin with.

I had court ordered NA (narcotics anonymous) one time years ago and learned something in my haze of party years; every single person there was self-medicating. Some were molested and turned to heroin as adults instead of dealing with the issues, others ended up doing meth after the loss of a loved one etc.

There's an underlying issue. You need to identify it and fix it.

I can easily drink nearly a whole 750ml/5th of vodka a night.

Vodka seems to be cleaner and never makes me feel sick in the morning.

My advice is to force yourself to not let drinking be the first thing you do when you get up.

Being a slave to the alcohol defeats the purpose of relaxing and having a drink.

This way it gives you time to eat and do other stuff.

Then later when you have a drink it will be nice and special like it used to be before you became a slave to it.
