what's is really like living in NYC?

Its dope if u have money.
>>

duh. that can be said about literally anything

It's okay unless you have to go to manhattan then it's a fucking nightmare

>>719043651

No like... It's the wealthiest city on earth; there is never a time when the city stops moving.

With adequate funds, you could spend your entire life exploring all the city has to offer, and never see even half of it.
>>
It's a big expensive overpriced dump with bums everywhere.
>>
I love hearing stories about life in NYC from regular ppl.

I live in a shitty farming town in butfuck nowhere so the idea of living in a huge place like NYC fascinates me.

The nightlife, the food, the rats, the crime, the pussy. The constant drone of traffic and sirens 24/7.

Share your experiences b.
>>
Bronxfag here. It's expensive. Even in a shithole like the Bronx, if you aren't making at least 100k a year or getting welfare, it sucks. So basically the middle class is being forced out. The minorities are generally unpleasant and the traffic stinks.
>>
>>719044522
I went there once when I was a kid.
There was a lot of people.
>>
It's incredibly expensive. This is the problem, if you don't have a lot of money, you won't be able to enjoy the incredible things NYC has to offer.

Apartments are tiny and cost a fortune. You will have cockroaches, there is no avoiding it. You don't need a car because public transportation is outstanding. The people are awesome. The food is incredible. The crime isn't as bad as you'd expect but you have to know the safe/unsafe areas.

The noise is inescapable. I have a bit of anxiety so the noise wasn't good for me. Sometimes I wished I was deaf.

All in all, I would recommend people get their lives started in NYC (maybe go to college there, and work there for 4-6 years) then get the fuck out before it turns you into an alcoholic neurotic.
>>
>>719044562
Continued: weird fact about the Bronx. There's only 1 Indian restaurant in the entire Bronx. And it's in an almost completely Irish neighborhood.
>>
>Lots of people everywhere
>You have to have money
>You have to wait for everything
>The transit system is third world
But
Jobs are plentiful, the food is good, and there's a lot of stuff to do in your free time
>>
>>719044562
pfft you think New York niggers are bad? Try living near Detroit and having to go there to see a concert or any other major event.
>>
>>719044838
I've always wondered about the noise.

It's still quiet here where I live. I can't imagine a constant sound in the background everywhere you go. All day every day.

Wouldn't you get mine a permanent headache or start to go insane?
>>
>>719045276
Some people seem fine with it. I wasn't.
>>
>>719042727
I spent two years living there, and it was great but felt like long enough. I had no money, and lived in a fairly shitty area, although it still felt safe. Best thing about NYC: you can do pretty much anything, 24 hours a day. Want a beer at 8am? No problem. Want to drop off your washing at 3am, can do. 5am ice cream, right this way...
>>
>>719044838
Honestly if you're responsible with your money and get roomates you can make your money go far. Staying the fuck out of Manhattan helps too.

I live in Long Island City so it's about a 4 minute subway ride to Grand Central. I live in a brand new 2 bedroom apartment and my share of the rent is $1400 and we have a great view. No cockroaches at all. Fuck ton of good bars and restaraunts within walking distance, and they don't charge Manhattan prices which is great.
>>
>>719044562
>It's expensive.
This is very true. I'm making $130k a year, and it's a struggle. If I get married, I'll have to move to a reasonably-priced suburb, but the commute will be awful.
>>
>>719045276
There are very quiet areas of the city if you know where to look.
>>
>>719045614
What kind of lifestyle are you trying to maintain where you're struggling with $130k? I made around 90 last year and will be around 100-110 this year. Saving plenty of money, and paying off student loans.
>>
>>719045276
you get used to it pretty quick. im not in NYC but i moved from a small country town to a big major US city.
>>
>>719045765
Student loans too, but the biggest expense is rent. My apartment has no real kitchen, so I eat out a lot. I could make lifestyle changes to reduce it somewhat, but it would still be a challenge.
>>
>>719045452
This. Plus whatever you want to do you can probably walk to
>>
>>719045452
That sounds awesome.

What's it like walking down a street there? Does the amazement of staring up at the huge buildings burn out pretty quick?

Can you just walk into pretty much any building you want and take the elevator to the top floor of you want?

I'd love to read some "day in a life of" stories.

>wake up what do you do
>go to work how
>etc etc
>>
Native NYC resident here. I don't even notice the noise. When I travel, I notice the absence of it, if that makes sense.
>>
>>719046142
Must be pretty creepy as a native when suddenly you get off a plane somewhere and it's quiet.
>>
>>719046142
Agreed. Went innawoods with my wife and kid by Woodstock recently and was amazed how quiet it was.
>>
>>719046136
The tall buildings and noise and stuff become totally normal. Lived here my whole life I barely notice the buildings and I'm so used to the noise it's the silences that throw me off
>>
>>719046136
Not the anon you answered, but I'll chip in. I don't even notice the buildings when here. The only time I do is when I'm driving back from the casinos in Connecticut.
>>
The good:
- incredible amount of shit to do
- interesting people at every corner
- easiest city in the world to live without a car

The bad:
- expensive af, even for the tiniest appartments
- resembles a police state, but then again no one wants the 70s/80s back
- you need to speak Spanish

The ugly:
- rats
- roaches
- bums
- tourists
>>
>>719045961
I find it impossible to believe that with 130k you're life is that hard financially. It's just not possible. I know people working at a damn best buy making 12-14 an hour that are living in NYC
>>
>>719044361
that's actually a bit scary for me
>>
>>719046225
When I would leave the city as a kid I would have trouble sleeping because the quiet was so strange
>>
>>719042727
It's great, but it's like you died and went to Jew Heaven
>>
>>719046372
You do not need to speak Spanish but it is useful depending on where you live/work/hang out
>>
>>719046136
I came from the UK, so it was a culture shock anyway. I lived in an area which was 90% Spanish speaking, so I stuck out massively, but everyone was friendly. A lot of the shops nearby didn't even speak English, which was...interesting. I didn't spend much time in areas with a lot of skyscrapers. Things you don't fully appreciate (or I didn't) - the weather is shitty 70% of the year (so hot and humid in summer), and it actually smells pretty bad in summer, particularly in Chinatown. But everything is so energised, and the museums and art galleries are immense. I think the Met is my favourite museum in the world.
>>
>>719044562
>>719044989
I'm willing to bet Baltimore niggers are worse.
>>
>>719046373
It's true. Combined my wife and I make around 180k a year and we shouldn't be struggling to save up for a house as much as we are. If we made that kinda money in Florida we'd be living like royalty. Rent, student loans, car payments and insurance etc is a bitch. The only thing keeping me working in NYC is the fat civil service pension I'll eventually get. Then I can retire somewhere cheap and enjoy
>>
What it's like living in NYC varies from neighborhood to neighborhood and sometimes block by block. Manhattanite for past 10 years here. Lived in 6 places over those 10 years. Settling down here is a challenge. I tried buying, took a mortgage, but over-reached. Selling it all and moving to a much cheaper outer borough. Staying in NYC though. Can't beat the... well, everything.
>>
>>719042727
You even stared down between your legs as you took a shit and pondered what it would be like to live in a toilet or a sewer? That is what it is like living in New York. Dirty, smelly, and full of vermin
>>
>>719045276
When most outsiders talk about NYC, they really mean Manhattan. Most of the outer boroughs (Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and The Bronx) have neighborhoods that are quiet and not much traffic.
>>
>>719046574
The rabble in Baltimore is *WAY* worse than NYC. Having lived in NYC I considered myself fairly street smart but I was not prepared for Baltimore.
>>
I've lived in NYC since college, so about 8 years now.

You'll spend your first months getting used to the noise, the traffic, how to shop for groceries (it's not like driving your car to Sams club or wal mart and loading a cart up and loading it in your car), the ridiculous rent, and how amazing city life can be.

You need a decent income to live here though
>rent: $4500 (1 bdrm 1ba apt near UWS)
>groceries (about 100-150 per week)
>travel (taxi/subway recommended, if you drive you're a sucker because parking is pretty expensive- like $10 for the first half hour to an hour and the rates climb after the first hour)

It's all worth it though. Good club scene, tons of beautiful single women
>>
>>719046698
Ditch the car man, if you live in the city take public transit or ubers
>>
>>719046373
Good thing I'm not bound to your expectations then. I'm living a good life, but there's no opportunity to save.
>>
Any NYers know anything about the whole Co-Op condo dichotomy and how to not get fucked by HOA fees?
>>
>>719044562
Serious question - How can getting welfare compare to 100K? Seems like being on welfare would be worse there than somewhere cheaper
>>
>>719048229
It doesn't compare the point is that people tend to exist on the extremes here.
>>
>>719048229
There are rent controls, so rent isn't always that expensive, particularly if you've been living there for a long time. Plus, food stamps are pretty generous really. It's still shit being poor in NYC though.
>>
>>719045512
>rent is $1400
where i live that's rent, utilities and groceries for the month. leaves me with a ton of cash from my pay. no rats, no roaches, few visible minorities, and you can actually sleep at night.
why the hell would i want to live in foreigner infested NYC?

you want to check out NYC, go cruise street view. the entire city is there.
>>
>>719048705
Well, I think there we have the difference between you and me. I like new experiences, art and culture, meeting new people from different countries and getting to know them. Even if it means it costs me more money. I enjoyed living in NYC for these reasons, you would not have. And that's OK.
>>
>>719048705

I read every comment and the same thing comes again and again.

When you study in the USA you have to do a loan?

It seems scary as fuck.

I got my degree and i'm an IT but I leave in France so it was really affordable to study.

That's really fucked up if you have to pay a shit ton of money to go to college.
>>
>>719048229
You get free food and section 8 housing. Rent and food are taken care of. When I go to the BJ's by me, I'm the only one without an ebt card and the parking lot is full of luxury cars.
>>
NYC can also really teach you tolerance, you will see people who are the living embodiment of every bad stereotype about their race but you will see just as many people who totally destroy those stereotypes as well
>>
Moved to Queens from the midwest 3 years ago. It was a huge change. I couldn't do it, so me and my gf moved to Jersey. Much better for us. Rent is cheaper and my commute is great. Visiting NYC and living in NYC are two totally different things.
>>
>>719042727
Ive been many times and I have yet to see shit that would compel me to want to live there. A bunch of fake fucks trying to live to one up the next guy in every facet of life. I end up there so the wifey can get some shitty fake ass purse from canal street in the back of some blacked out van.
>>
>>719049481
Also this. The competition there is palpable. You see people so insanely filthy rich there. Most of it has been inherited, not earned, which makes it disgusting to look at. Yeah, I used to be jelly but got over it.
>>
>>719049401
>When you study in the USA you have to do a loan?
unless you have $100K lying around to pay for school, then yes you need a loan
>>
>>719049420

>>
>>719049401
>country full of mudslimes
>French taxations and 'state services'

Your education wasn't free, and if you don't leave you will pay for it, plus distribution fee, cause gathering and distributing is expensive work.
>>
>>719048705
Yeah the 1,400 includes utilities, so really not so far off what you pay tbh. Not really rats in my area, it's a very clean part of town.

People seem to get this view that NYC = Times square/central park/midtown. In reality people who live here avoid those places like the plauge because they're dirty tourist infested shitholes.

There are plenty of quiet, clean neighborhoods in the city, but you'd only ever visit if you live there. People don't seem to understand that.
>>
>>719049620
Yeah the key is to get over it, who gives a fuck about the rat race as long as you're having a good time.
>>
>>719049878
True. Before I moved here, I thought it was all New Yorkers on NYE at Times Square. I quickly learned no one who lives here goes to Time Square on NYE. It's 99.99% tourists.
>>
>>719049481
Lol if that's the part of town you're hanging out in of course you'll see no reason to come back. Canal is infested with niggers and other shitty minorities. Manhattan sucks tbh, outter boroughs are where it's at.
>>
>>719050017
Damn straight. It is easy to get caught up in it, though. I understand how easily it is to fall into that trap of what part of the city you live in, what things you own, your salary, etc.
>>
>>719049401
You don't have to take a loan but unless your wealthy it will seriously restrict your choice of schools. One good thing about NYC is that it has a good public university system that is relatively cheap. But if you want to go to a private university or one of the bigger/more prestigious public schools you better have money or a loan. Unless you're awesome and sports then you can get a scholarship

I make 65k a year. NYC born and raised. Got a teaching gig when I was 23. Im now 27. I bought a house, paid my loans, and live comfortably. Pay 900$ a month in mortage, much less than rent. I think people have a hard time, because they think they can balance responsibilities and trying to live like Kanye. If you can live like a monk for 3-4 yrs, you can enjoy the rest of your life.

Sam's Club folded in this area, and Costco has a minimal presence, so there's little competition. That said, the prices are competitive, though sometimes sales at other stores can marginally beat the standard bulk pricing.

you gentrifying faggot scum, go back to where you came from. we were all ok without you.

have nothing better to do so i'll post a long one. when people talk about NYC, people talk about manhattan. no new yorkers actually live in manhattan for the most part. all people from out of town or rich people that were already there before all everything started skyrocketing, or regular people who has gotten apartments before everything went crazy. you dont just "move there" if you dont have a good job that makes good money, and they're almost all from out of town. any authenticity is dead and buried except in more undesirable parts where its still "real" in manhattan, and the outer boroughs where weird liberal sjw-type fags havent invaded yet. i live in astoria queens, from a barely above lower lower lower middle class family (middle class i see as comfortable living, lower class i see niggers in projects), and its silent, good neighborhoods, except the areas next to manhattan on the waterfront are being wanted by those even poorer whiteys from other states that dont have enough to do it right. so they literally push old-country culture away. rip to the greek, italian, eastern european white culture that made its mark here.

the most exciting part is literally have things to do every day (if you're a normie). if you need a nice jolt, heading to babylon and walking amongst the schmucks will perk you right up. as long as you find a decent apartment it really isn't that cheap, my family literally lived on like 25k and now that i have and ok job it really isn't hard.

people complaining about making 100k and struggling is a literal meme, its just straight up overspending for overspendings sake. beautiful women everywhere in manhattan, after all it is the cream of the crop who make it there. and people visiting from out of the country, if you are decent looking you can find a new excited bitch to fuck every single weekend if you want & make new memories.
>>
>>719042727
it's beautiful! even better in winter! like in home alone 2! sometimes you can see casey neistat snowboarding! everybody is friendly! i love the jewish community here! my friend anthony bourdaine and i love to explore all the restaurants here! bagels, pastrami, cronuts, halal guys, shake shack....dude NYC IS LIT!!!!!
>>
VeteranFag who has lived all over the US.

My best friend just moved to NYC and I've been through it before. It's honestly really expensive. A lot of people in this thread seem to mistake "a lot of places to spend money" with "a lot of things to do." You'll run out pretty quickly because even efficiency apartments are outrageous.

It is true that there's an insane amount of people though so clubs, groups, meetups, and meeting girls is the easiest thing in the world. That kind of wears off though as you get older, though. You also have to put up with high rates of mentally ill people wandering the streets and accosting you for money, which can be pretty confrontational.

I prefer the outdoors so I like living in the country.

i dont mind people headin to LIC, there was literally nothing there. or for the nigger-areas, fuck them, crime ridden shitholes anyway.

but you pick the old-timey comfy neighborhoods for the charm and originality, and in turn flock to these areas and turn it into the same bullshit that has sprung up anywhere. now streets are more crowded, rents are super high and now theres like cookie cutter starbucks and sushi places and generic banks everywhere. good news theres more generic white girls to fuck, and some isolated areas now have a bit of movement, but thats literally it

ITT: complaining about gentrification

New York, especially Manhattan, is safer than ever thanks to it.

Also people who call themselves real "new Yorkers " are full of shit. I doubt you even live here. I bet you also say dumb shit like real new Yorkers avoid time square.

Also, the rent game can be played to your advantage. If you are a master tenant in a large apartment you can give yourself discounts. My friend lives on 96 and Amsterdam and pays $600. I live in Morningside and pay $900.

To OP: the exciting stuff you see on TV or in the news or movies happen in Manhattan, mostly below 110. Travel further into Queens and Brooklyn and it's residential. Same with the Bronx. Staten island is like mid west town.

I've technically lived in NYC my entire life, except I've actually lived in the suburbs of Staten Island. Decent place to live, cost of living is way lower than the actual city while public transportation can still get you there in about an hour to an hour and a half.
As far as I can tell, there are no disadvantages to living in SI or Jersey or suburbs elsewhere in the city.

Queensfag here. Queens is probably the most diverse borough in NYC. The 7 train is considered as a global ride. You start off from white people territory, to the hispanic neighbors, then to chinatown.

I agree with the Bronxfag, if you're not making 100k a year, it's really hard to make ends meet around here.

Pros:
- alot of shit to do
-nearest deli/bodega is like a block away
- public transportation is 24/7, easy to get around places.

Cons:
-Fare hikes going from 2.75 to 3.00 (fucking assholes)
- Rent is going up, cause of fucking gentrification
- You have to be bilingual to some extent
- The subways are fucking disgusting

All in all, a great place to live if you aren't coming from a metropolitan city.

Went there, full of rich fucks, spoiled people and fags. Disgusting

Just because the UAE government makes Dubai pretty to tourists doesn't make the city wealthy. Also, Abu Dhabi has more wealth than Dubai. Either way, you may as well be in Aleppo, same chance of getting blown to shreds.

London's pretty smelly especially Whitechapel and the weather is equally shitty 70% of the year and also has amazing Museums, so what was so shocking anyway?

Certainly some areas in London people only speak Bengali
>>
Don't ever fucking walk slow on the sidewalk. It lets us know that you're a fucking tourist (e.g. - Times Square), and you're also impeding on everyone else's commute.

Rule no. 1 when you come to NY. Also, ASK for help. New Yorkers are usually very helpful when you need directions. Just be ready to tell them what the cross street is of the location you want.
>>
I've lived on Long Island my whole life. The best part is being is the shadow of NYC. There is literally always something going on there. Even on a dull night when nothing is going on, you hop on a train and head to the city. Sooner or later you will find something, or something will find you.

I've visited small 1 horse towns here and there, after like 9 PM everything shuts down and I want to kill my self from boredom.

Mate what the fuck?
That's a Wimpy's burger flipper salary.

You need at least £200,000 to live comfortably in London

This is the most amazing city on earth. You can make your money go far if you're smart. Bring a girlfriend or boyfriend. I never lived with more than one roommate not including my gf and I never payed more than $600/mo in rent. Now I have a great two bedroom apt in Bushwick, my total rent is $1,250 and Airbnb brings in over $1,700 most months and sexy girls in my apt all the time. I'm on Medicaid and get $197 in food stamps a month. This city has all the sickos in the world myself included so I poop in guys mouth's for $250 a pop and my gf makes $250 an hour getting her feet worshipped and drooled on. Girls on tinder are down for fucked up sex all the time.

Life is better here than back home where shit is vastly cheaper. Be enterprising, squeeze out from the system what you can. Make it work.
