Currently in japan through a year long exchange program. There are a bunch of other universities from US, NZ, and other asian countries that also exchange with this school. It's the same exact shit here too man. I loathe going to my language class and having to sit with legitimate autistic weebs. Most of them are doing a 2 month exchange, but I'm doing a whole year. So far I've seen 3 different cycles of people come through my class. Every single white person is an unbearable Otaku. There has been two chinese students, they were pretty cool.

I've been hiding the fact that I took two semesters of Japanese in University for about ten years living in Japan. No one ever suspected that I had studied the language although I am now conversationally fluent.

Two reasons for this:
1. The teacher, a Japanese girl in her mid twenties, was horrible and had no experience in education whatsoever (basically the equivalent of a NOVA teacher here in Japan, but somehow employed by a University)
2. The japanese we studied is not part of the Japanese language. As far as I can tell the entirety of the two textbooks consisted of a fantasy language that was made up by people who've never been to Japan or spoken to Japanese people. Still don't know how our teacher didn't notice that, except oh now I remember--she was too busy getting fucked by this super geeky anime nerd in my class (really, this happened--the guy was a complete social reject and should have died old, alone and hugging an anime-girl body pillow--but he married our useless japanese teacher).

I like to attend and volunteer for all my schools advertised activities, and to help boost their participation numbers, the staff often ask me to take my classmates with me. And they like when I send them pictures of us to use for their newspaper or whatever. Most of them are introverts and don't like going places, doing things, or meeting people. When I get my Japanese visa, I am moving to Tokyo to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Studio Ghibli or a game designer!

I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

I've always been a fan of Science Fiction--books, movies, TV shows, comics, etc. and I think what appeals to me in Japanese Sciene Fiction animations is their willingness to have actual plot. I don't care much for any other subgenre in Japanese anime--the vast majority is fluff--but Sci-Fi anime tend to both explore science and the characters in ways that appeal to an adult intellect as opposed to the trend in american Sci-Fi movies and TV shows to dumb down everything and gradually destroy the entire genre.

Japan has some real gems of Science Fiction. Ghost in the Shell: Innocence; Arimitage III (even though the budget was cheap); Mobile Suit Gundam: Stardust Memory, 8th MS Team, The Origin (not the original series though, sorry that was really just for kids and selling toys), and a lot more.

In particular I would leave Akira and Evangelion out of this list though, even though they are among Japan's most famous "SF" animations. Both of them are basically desperate attempts to mindfuck their audience with huge plot-holes and lacking explanation of the narrative. Shoddy really.

I'm curious as to the reasons why people in this thread spend a year or so in Japan.
Is it just as exchange students, studying abroad or something or do some of you just decide to do it as a vacation of sorts?
