In the uk, you can get either a shotgun certificate or a firearms certificate.

A shotgun license is easy to get as long as you have no convictions, your local police have to have a reason to deny you one, but a legal requirement of owning one is it's locked away in a secure cabinet.

A firearms certificate would cover rifles, etc, nothing automatic obviously, i think you can own pistols of historical significance. Typically you have to belong to a recognised shooting club for rifles, unlike a shotgun license however you have to provide a good reason for owning one and it's guaranteed if you tell them home defence you will not be granted one.
