Different anon, but Final Fantasy IV is probably one of the better ones for a completely new player. It's where the series really came into its own.

Also, I'll probably catch some flak for this, but the XIII series is good in my opinion. Yes, the first game has the issue of essentially railroading you for most of the game until you get the large over-world but the combat system is neat and it's improved upon in XIII-2 and Lightning Returns.

I agree that Sazh was/is a great dad who was trying to do his level best for his son but Snow got on my nerves at times with his "hero" talk. I mean, I get his motivation. He wants to find a way to have his fiance not be a giant crystal but in the early part of the game he was almost unbearable. I actually liked Hope better than I did Snow. Part of the reason for that is, well, I actually lost my mother as a teenager as well. I suppose I empathized with him.

Snow had real tough circumstances thrown at him. Sometimes literaly, likely at many many, miles per hour.

Fiance given a Domacles sword fate, used to bring about a kill-party of all the characters so she could bait them into jumpstarting a mass genocide. Then he gets news that the very thing he'd been trying to protect forhis fiance was orchestrated to be a slaughterhouse. Hero talk obnoxious or not, Snow had it the worst out of all the characters. Just about everything he'd had left after growing up as an orphan was slowly but surely taken away.

And then he had to suffer like that for like 900 years when suddenly nobody could die of old age, and he took it upon himself to actually absorb the energy that was tearing the world apart while some girl who looks like his fiance is running around unleashing more of it (or so it seemed.)

I firmly believe that snow was a raging alchoholic in Lightning returns.
