I can definitely imagine a 12-year-old imagining hanging herself in the woods on camera as being some romantic way to go that will make everyone who was ever mean to her cry. Sure, there are adults who don't want to get involved, and sure, there are situations where kids are lying just for same random reason. We shouldn't arrest people on zero knowledge or evidence. At the very least though, telling the police or child services will force them to pay attention and watch the child. Maybe the police or child services make regular, unscheduled stops at the house to check up on things, or give the child a camera or something to help catch the act. I'm not sure what they would do, but telling someone like police or CS is always the best possible answer. If nothing is truly wrong, then there should be no negative outcome.

I think that's what most suicides are, actually. Suicides are done on impulse in most occasions. Most people don't want to die, no matter how bad their lives are. That instinct to survive is just so powerful that you can never really turn it off.

So suicides usually happen during a particular swell of emotion. They feel sad, angry, frustrated, out of control at the same time. They want people who love them to feel bad. Believe me, I've been there too. I recognize the difference between wanting everyone to realize that your desire to die was real and not just used to guilt trip other people into treating you better and actually wanting to die. It was hard to admit, but I realized that it was always the former. Same with my brother. We're just unstable people that cried for help.

Seriously, that's what most suicides are. And the sad thing is, most of the time they regret it as soon as it's set in motion and there's nothing they can do to stop it.

Then again, it's kinda hilarious when someone is thinking "this is gonna really fuck everyone up" and then realize that they've just done something incredibly retarded that they can't back out from anymore, and it's now too real. It's ironic, in a darkly funny way.

I feel like the addition of people recording their suicide attempts makes it that much harder for people to back out of it, because of an imagined pressure that puts on them (even though no one's actually watching, unless they're livestreaming it). Talking to the police feels risky to a kid in this situation because police will involve the parents. If the parents are the abusers, then it seems likely to end badly for them if they manage to convince the police and then take reprisal because the kid tattled on them.

Since the kid's already experience adults being unhelpful, she probably had no reason to think the police would be any different, especially considering those risks.

In a depressingly funny turn of events, she couldn't even do that right and survived. Leaving a mess without leaving the world.
