as it does so, it will expand, becoming much more nebulous, and forming a Red Giant. its size will expand, swallowing mercury, and Venus at the absolute minimum. viewing the sun from earth, it would be a boiling red-white disc that fills half of the sky, while the earths' surface is boiled under the increased output. If earth is unlucky, it will also be swallowed.

after a "short" time like that (about a billion years), we will be bathed in radiation as the sun contracts inward, and then blows off its outer layers in a series of detonations (novas - not supernovas - the sun is too small to go supernova.), and then shrinks to become a White Dwarf, that will burn carbon for billions of years, like some sort of miser, a small cold speck reacting the dregs of helium into carbon, the carbon into oxygen, etc.
The planets around it will either escape from orbit to track off in the cold dark void of interstellar space if the amount of mass lost in the blowing off of layers is enough, or they will be left orbiting a small, intense white spot of a star, which confers a twilight existence, as they slowly cool, plate tectonics cease, and they gradually become deep-frozen, dead worlds.
The gas layers blown off during the contracting, meanwhile, will be illuminated, creating a nebula around the dying star, lighting up the night sky around those frozen remnant planets.
