Unpopular Opinion Thread: Music Edition
This is one of Modest Mouses better albums. Come at me.
That's an incredibly common opinion.
Whats next? You prefer living with electricity and air conditioning?
>>717864258
This
Try harder, OP. That album is wonderful
>>717863963
The only people I know who say the older shit is better can't actually stand to listen to it and only say that because they're faggot hipsters.
>>717864258
Everybody i have ever talked to says that this is when modest mouse went commercial and ruined themselves. I am pleasantly surprised to hear this from /b/
London Calling sucks. Overly long track list, pretend ska and reggae abound, average lyricism. Not worth the time it takes to listen to it.
>>717864484
on the same note, AM is the best arctic monkeys album IMO. all the other ones just sound like every other garage band out there. sure they had a bit going for them and they're talented musicians but AM was when they actually started trying to make a new sound, you know?
>>717863963
I don't even know who modest mouse is but the fact that most people know about them probably means its shit music imo
Every time I listen to popular music it seems really dull, regardless of what genre or time it comes from.
I think this is because the fact that it's popular means it must cater to everyone. Because of this there is less character in the music. You can't develop a song full of character or that is interesting or different because there are going to be some people who don't like that difference.
>>717865195
>being this much of a defener
there is literally so much incredible music that is also mainstream. you are limiting your own tastes so much when you do this.
if you want examples I can name examples. /b/ will scoff at me but /b/ scoffs at everything.
>>717865073
AM is great, but I also think that Arctic Monkeys don't have a bad album, except maybe Suck It and See, but even that has a lot of good tracks on it.
>>717864895
Agreed. Train in Vain is a good song though
>>717865428
This makes me pretty mad too. Although it sometimes pisses me off when I'm at a show and I see people there that only know the singles
>>717865428
Hey man I won't lie
Once in a while I hear something I like that is mainstream. I know of two songs atm that I like that are mainstream: https://soundcloud.com/childish-gambino/redbone and Cake by the Ocean by DNCE, (Though I've listened to it so many times im kinda sick of it now)
I like to think I'm open minded about it (though I can't really tell), and even so I find that I mostly don't like mainstream stuff. And it isn't that I'm not exposed to it, my friends play it around me all the time.
The new tool album is probably going to suck. people have been over hyping the fuck out of them. Everyone for the last 12 years have been like
>WHENS THE NEW TOOL ALBUM
>MAYNARD, NEW TOOL WHEN
>*during puscifer interview* WHAT ABOUT TOOL
Its gonna be nice getting a new one yeah, but people are going to be sad when his voice isnt as powerful as it used to be or it wont be as great as what they've already written
>>717864402
I say it because I'm 50 years old, nigga.
I have no issue with pulling two or three tracks from an acclaimed album meant to be listened to comprehensively and then throwing those tracks into a playlist for working.
Also, The Death Grips seems like a meme band.
>>717865950
okay so I have no idea what your taste is but have you listened to any really, really famous shit? abbey road, dark side of the moon, basically any of kanye's old stuff? like, go listen to "champion" or something. I know I care a little too much about this but I used to feel the same way and only listen to obscure shit but then I had the revelation that there is literally nothing distinguishing mainstream from underground shit besides how many people resonate with it, and I found so much great music that way.
now, if you wanna talk about how a lot of modern pop and top 40 stuff is made to be derivative and appeal to the lowest common denominator with very little substance, then that's a different story. but just writing off literally all popular music is a folly.
I could listen to chill-hop or late night bumps for the next ten years and be okay with it.
>>717866483
>The Death Grips seems like a meme band
can we talk about this? I like to think I'm pretty open minded but I actually can't understand why people like them.
>repetitive, grinding beats
>vocals sound like a mouth full of novicaine and cotton balls so you can't tell what the fuck they're trying to say
>incongruent style
like, they're avant-garde and usually I'm a massive wanker who likes that sort of thing but I can't wrap my head around that one.
>>717863963
Modest mouse is for hipster fags.
>>717866163
Maynard is a fucking faggot.
Any one who buys that new album is as retarded as he said.
You can't call me a retard for liking your music and expect me to fork over 300 dollars to watch you play.
Fuck Tool
Defheaven is just hipster black metal
im not a trve kvlt cunt but i went and seen them live and it was just a room full of hipsters and faggots. Their vocalist as weird as shit on stage too. it really took away from the show
>>717867172
thing is is that i get where he was coming from. maynard has always been a person to go see perform, but never really talk to.
but no, like i said for the last 12 years or whatever its just been people grinding him about tool even when hes talking about his other bands. i can understand why he would call his fans retarded. its because the ones like that fucking are.
>ill still pirate the album though
>>717864895
Agreed
The Beastie Boys is genuinely the worst music I've ever heard. There's not a single piece of music I've heard that sounds worse than a beastie boys song, except another Beastie boys song.
>>717863963
>having an opinion on a Modest Mouse album
>>717863963
>>717864484
Their first three albums are much better but Good News is still great. We Were Dead is when it went downhill. I blame Johnny Marr.
>>717866594
I've listened to dark side of the moon and kanye and stuff but I'm not really into it. I would like to say I like Pink Floyd's earlier albums, but to be honest I just appreciate them rather than routinely listen and get into it.
I'm into future and beats and stuff. Perhaps the fact that I'm into producing makes me appreciate amateur tracks more because I can more easily analyze it or something.
what im into btw https://soundcloud.com/prodixie/likes
>>717868158
you have incredibly vapid taste, my friend
Zappa is fucking awesome.
>Faggot hipsters don't like him
...
Also:
Music doesn't have to be complex to be well written.
>>717866793
You just don't get it, man.
>>717868298
this should be OP pic btw
>>717865195
Yea.. You're just a hipster faggot. There are literally 10's of millions of "mainstream" songs and artists out there. You are fucking retarded.
>>717863963
>>717865195
Hahahaha jesus christ
>>717863963
Now for an actual unpopular opinion.
This is their best album that isn't The Moon and Antarctica .
This is the best musician of the 90s
>>717868158
I like the stuff on here. what are your thoughts on stuff like Flume, or Birocratic, then?
also your playlist reminded me of this, trust me it's a banger https://soundcloud.com/next-to-blue/9ywplmxuuxnq
>>717865073
AM is one of my favorite albums. Chill as fuck and some songs gives me feels cuz I start thinking about my ex
FF made pink season shitty on purpose to spite all the hype
>>717863963
AIC defined grunge before Nirvana
Frances the Mute is a better album than Deloused in the Comatorium
>>717863963
best MM by far
>>717869553
>>717868999
Checked
>>717869694
I take it you've never heard the remaster?
This is a fucking good album.
It was not worth two years of waiting for.
Has some good songs like "Ville Mentality" and "For Whom the Bell tolls", and the "She's mine" parts. But other than that it wasn't a lot of music and it really wasn't that appealing to me.
>>717869937
Chocolate starfish and the hot dog flavored water was better
>>717869837
i'd say it's criminally underrated, but better than deloused? that's a fantastic album, through and through. Francis has better individual moments, musically, but the ambient/sampling hinders its potential.
>>717869937
this
>>717869998
/this
>>717869998
Chocolate Starfish was much cringier in the lyrics department and a lot more boring
>Unpopular opinion
I prefer MBV album over Loveless.
This is a good band. Well, they were.
>>717870543
I liked them better when they were called Matchbox Twenty
>>717865195
holy jesus... do you even hear yourself talking? you special snowflake you
>>717869002
I don't know of Birocratic ima listen to it right now
I'm into the flume songs that don't overuse that future bass/detuned saw wave synth. I enjoy it mostly for the percussion he uses but I haven't really obsessed over any one of his works.
This song really takes the main synth thingy and tickles your ears with it. Really dynamic.
https://soundcloud.com/amairmusic/flight
But yeah I feel that flume vibe in general
>>717870717
I know I sound pretentious af so i don't tell other people irl and instead post online on threads where I'm supposed to have unpopular opinions.
I hate myself too.
>>717869937
Unfortunately this WAS a popular opinion about 17 years ago...vomitous.
THIS is my favorite AM album. Tracks flow well into one another and the story telling/palpable annoyance with posers was quite delicious.
>>717870828
nice, i'll check that out when i'm not in class lol
and i too dig flume's drums, too. you might also wanna look into mura masa and his someday somewhere ep for more cool shit in kind of a similar vein but better imo
>>717868716
I also thoroughly enjoyed this album it feels like a more polished version of their old sound they've progressed quite a bit through the years
Now for anyone into progcore this is a wonderful instrumental EP
>>717871602
Oh no I'm down with mura masa I've been listening to him for a few years.
This album is pretty damned awful and every album after it was worse.
Great band until about 1988. I mean everyone sells out eventually but do you have to do it to THIS degree?
Jesus Fucking Christ.
>>717872001
you can't call this prog and i fucking hate that people still use progressive as a genre with modern music. in what fucking way is this progressive?
>>717872001
Have you heard handmade cities yet?
>>717872135
dope.
>>717872237
It's in the writing style with key and tempo changes it's not the genre so much as a descriptor
>>717872579
Yea Pastures is my favorite off it. I had the pleasure of seeing him with Animals As Leaders last month, The Madness of Many made me jizz myself
>>717865073 i pick up what you put down mayne
>>717871158
you grow out of it mate (the attitude), not that you'll ever be lulled into enjoying the actual corporatly designed trendy tween pop, because it's literally impossible to reverse it (it's called growing the fuck up).
It's fairly easy to recognize what's following the recipe gnamsayin?
but the attitude that anything getting airtime is horseshit, you'll start to let go of it, bit by bit.
from time to time radio delivers some pretty solid stuff.
>>717863963
If you compare shit to shit you still have shit
>>717872670
listening to this album i can tell you assuredly that the writing is not progressive at all. read the definition of progressive my friend.
>>717872135
okay okay last one but iglooghost is crazy, go listen to chinchou or places u hide if you want/have the time for it
