It's because of the hot magma, it attracts meteors.

Meteors create craters upon impact.
When striking the ground the meteor is basically pulverized, exploding/shattering into a trillion little bits instantly.
The hole, or crater, is the crash site of the meteor, a giant hole where the Earth was struck that I created by the sheer force of impact.
Most crater sites still have residual bits of spacerock left in them.
