Word of advice, full metal guns will rust if you carry them and it's hot outside, get a striker fired polymer/stainless gun.
>>
>>717021069
that would be awesome, its just out of my price range and is just too large to practically carry. because if i go desert eagle id get the .50
>>
/k/ will be better at giving you options, stick with compact polymers.

even with open carry?

I don't recommend getting a 1911, but if you have the money to buy a good one, money to buy tons of ammo to practice with (9mm is cheaper by a lot), wear relatively baggy clothes (to conceal such a large gun)... then go for it. Just train. Take courses. The more knowledgeable opinions and time firing the gun (correctly), the better. Check out the Glock 36, XDS, and MP45c.

Also, consider single stack CCW 9mms. Easier to conceal, cheaper to train with. MP Shield, XDS, Glock 43, Ruger LC9, SIG P938... so on.

Sig P220. Same or greater capacity (8+1), more accurate, more reliable, easier to operate and maintain.

They can be had for $500-650 as "certified pre-owned," which are law enforcement trade ins that the factory inspects, overhauls, and warranties for 1 year. Look for the red hospital style bracelet on the grip. One of the best deals in the gun market.

i just picked up a M&P Shield .40 for under 500 bucks yesterday, its a great gun to conceal no matter what you body type. 7+1 of hollow points and you can't go wrong

I conceal carry a Glock 27 (.40 s&w) during the winter and a Glock 43 (9mm) during the spring/summer/fall. The 27 is too bulky for summer clothes in Florida, hence the much slimmer 43 during the hot months.

I have shot thousands of rounds through both without a single gun-caused malfunction. 1911s are finicky with ammunition and even high quality ones will occasionally choke on anything but brass ball ammo (i own a 1911 and enjoy shooting it but wouldn't trust my life with it)
>>
>>717021788
It'd be a lower quality gun. 1911s are a meme. They're good guns, but they're surpassed by many, many modern designs. Like anon said above, polymer single stack 9s are superior carry guns.
>>
can't help you without stating the purpose of the weapon.

you mentioned carry, but I'm not gonna assume.

OP, I'm 29, got my CPL when I was 21. I started out with a bersa (horrible) next was a PT92 Taurus stainless 9mm (great gun, but sold) and now I have a Glock 19 Gen 4 9mm, and I will keep this forever.
>>
>>717020973

>>
>>717021710
with that thinking your first gun should be a .22 you fucking retard
>>
>>717021710
Stopping power is a myth, as far as how people use it. You have a pistol. None of them have stopping power until 357mag. You have to be able to hit a moving target, multiple times, enough to incapacitate them.

Modern hollowpoint technology from Speer Golddots, Federal HST, Winchester Ranger XT... they all expand to .7inch. And you have more of them when compared to similar sized .45acp guns.

The truth is, handgun rounds aren't meant to have "stopping power". Get a rifle or shotgun for "stopping power".

Having the option to conceal is important. You're call on open carry, be sure to buy a Safariland, Blackhawk, or Bladetech holster that's level III-ish to have that extra protection from gun grabs.

Get a dedicated carry handgun for carry and a full size handgun for home defense. Or buy a shotgun or even a carbine for home defense depending on where you live.

You're showing your complete absense of experience with firearms here. .45ACP is a massive round and completely overkill for carrying. Carrying 9mm will give you more ammo, which you will do you more good in a real life scenario. You're not Rick Grimes, this isn't the walking dead, you will NOT be getting headshots 90% of the time. If you want a large caliber go ahead and get one to keep at home and shoot at the range. No reason not to have multiple guns. But for CARRYING, get a 9mm. You'll thank us later.

This guy nailed it perfectly>>717021526
>>
>>717022312
This is entering pocket-pistol territory. I have no problem with it, and have one myself for when I'm wearing gym shorts and my larger guns would pull my pants down.

However, the downside to these pocketguns is training with them. They are meant for shots taken from less than 10 feet. And they HURT your hand to shoot them. Adrenaline pumping, no problem. Practicing at the range... it won't be fun to shoot.

That's why the CCW polymer gun industry has skyrocketed in the last 10 years. Something you can get a full grip on that can be easily concealed.
>>
>>717020973
If this is your first handgun, don't go on looks alone, 1911s are not the most beginner friendly handgun, unless you've shot them before. Most people either start with a revolver or a striker fired pistol like a glock or S&W sd9. 1911's need a lot of tender loving care when you field strip them and you better make damn sure your spring and firing pin are in tip top shape before you dry fire it.

here's my experience after 12 years of concealed carry. you're going to need at least two handguns. the 1911 is fine for winter, when you can hide it under a coat. but keep in mind it's only an 8 round gun and it's S/A, so you will either have to carry it cocked n locked or rack the slide in an emergency. in the summer, you will need something smaller and lighter that you can hide under a shirt or in a pocket. that's something like a snub nose revolver. i carry a .357 for belt under a shirt or a light .38 if i'm carrying in my pocket (with a pocket holster always). i own a lot of handguns, but that's how i do it
>>
>>717023427
Springfield makes a good 1911 at a good price point

SIG is running away with the non-classic 1911 industry

Kimber is expensive... and not what it use to be. But is by no means to be discounted.

>>717023287
1911s are great, I love them, I even carry a 1911 in the fall and winter but...they're not great guns for your first/only carry piece. 1911s have two major problems in my eyes: they're heavy and they're long. I'm 6'1" and used to be a rugby forward and its hard for me to find the right combination of holster/belt/clothing to properly conceal a 1911.

You're also going to need to consider costs. A 1911 is going to cost a lot more to shoot and you're going to want to spend a lot of time practicing if you're just starting to carry. You're going to spend more time cleaning it. A good 1911 is going to cost a lot more than a striker fired workhorse.

TRUTH. A gun belt and holster by Safariland, Blackhawk, or Bladetech are a must for open carry.

Now... if you don't give a fuck about weapon retention, you can go with leather classics like Galco, Bianchi, and a million others. At least get a leather snap though. It won't slow anyone down much, but if you trip and eat shit, you gun is less likely to go sliding across the ground.

This. My first gun was also a 1911 because I loved the Punisher movie and the guns history. Big mistake. I have many other guns now and learned too much. Go with a Glock 19 or 23, get gen 4. Excellent triggers. Can get a used police trade 23 from sportmans outdoor superstore for under 350. May come with a few digs in the polymer, but its an indestructible carry gun. The 19 will have larger capacity and less recoil, but you'll pay a bit more for it.

A Sig Sauer P320 Compact. Another amazing gun with a hair trigger. I baby it, so I don't carry it. I usually carry my Glock 23 in my waistband with a MIC holster, works perfectly.

Last but not least, an FNS 9 Compact. Comes with 2 12 rd mags, one 17 rd mag. Delish trigger.

You can watch Hickock45 videos on all of those guns, as well as many other videos. But for fucks sake, don't spend 500+ on an outdated 1911, when you can spend that on something way better that's actually reliable if a bit of dirt gets in it.

I actually own a Makarov but. It's reliable, reasonably accurate, and stupid easy to maintain. Throw in the fact that it's probably one of the less expensive handguns mentioned in this thread and it's not a bad choice.
But the ammo probably won't be in stock at your neighborhood Walmart, if a local gun shop carries it you're likely to pay a premium price for it, and on line it's almost the same price as 9mm luger.
Also, the magazines are getting harder to find and more expensive. When I bought mine, I picked up 8 spare mags for $7 each. They're going for around $50 now, if you can find them.

Plus, this is a contingency plan... an insurance policy. So the likelihood that someone in podunk Wisconsin is going to need to protect themselves is irrelevant. It's just in case.

So just in case you fucking miss an armed mugger, have more than 8 rounds.

Just in case you're home is being broken into by a team of two or more... have more than 8 rounds.

Just in case you're shopping at a mall and there's a multiple shooters blazing through... have more than 8 rounds.

I actually don't recommend this one. I worked at a big gun store and we sold the hell out of these because they would go on sale for like... $300.

Everyone would try to return them because of the trigger, the large grip, etc.

Smith and Wesson are trying to make it a better gun (it started out as the horrific Sigma)... but its just not a good gun. If your price range is $700, buy a $400 ccw piece and put the rest to a couple holsters (CCW and Open carry), 1000 rounds of target ammo, 100 rounds of defense ammo, and if there's anything left, a class.

>a more powerful round than a bunch of smaller weaker rounds

well, a nice .357 magnum hollow point can turn your chest into a cavity the size of a softball.

a 9mm can punch a hole through your head with ease.

the little .22LR, my favorite of the bunch, because when it pierces through the front skull plate on your big forehead, there has been enough reduced velocity to where the round will not exit through the back, instead it will bounce around, tearing more shit up along its path.

get fucking real, this is real life, not fucking Call of Duty.

... I'm going to give you benefit of the doubt and say you haven't had any exposure to a training environment.

Accuracy is a luxury that a lot of gunfights wont afford you. You'll be point shooting. Sticking the gun in front of you, finding the front sight, putting it center mass, and firing until the threat is down or it is not longer safe to.

You need ammo to make up for all the misses and non-vital shots.
>>
>>717028913
im well aware of all these facts.

the .357 is just impractical and so are head shots. the best and albeit easiest target is usually center of mass

Slides aren't plastic in polymer guns. They're a lightweight metal being cycled by a high speed round - 9mm or .40 usually, not a large, heavy slow caliber like .45
Compare the snappiness in two similarly weighted guns chambered in 9mm vs .45 - .45 will be a gentler, heavier push than the snappier recoil of the smaller, faster round.
>>
>>717028730

I fired off 200 rounds on my Sigma already this year, and hasn't disappointed me since. Plus I keep my gun cleaned and well lubricated.

>>
>>717029230
Well, for starters, there are exceptions to every rule... minus the awful trigger. You might just be use to yours.

Secondly, 200 rounds isn't even a break in period. You need about 1k to know if yours is going to malfunction.

And you one anecdotal experience does not discount my +500 guns sold. Literally over 80% tried to return them. The trigger and clunky size of it was the main complaint, not reliability. Though, that happened often too.
>>
>>717029522
Disregard this women, she sucks cocks.
>>
>>717029098
I completely agree with this.

try taking any pistol, running 10 feet and then firing 3 shots at a man sized target within 2 seconds of stopping and see how many hit and where they hit.

in a real fight you dont get to stand still, get a good aim for 5 seconds to make sure you're going to hit the exact spot you want to hit.

you raise your weapon and pull the trigger before the other guy, who already has his out and pointed at you gets shots off at you.
>>
>>717029115
well, not really all that impractical if you shot the guy in the head and he is no longer part of the equation.

but the way i see it.. if it stops the bad guy in his tracks, then job done.
