All these young men hate themselves.
They legitimately hate existence so much that this birthday, this day which is there's to be somewhat joyous is spent being totally miserable.
The number they see is like this hard reminder telling them how alone and disconnected they have become with the world. Some of them might very well be good people who are just sheltered to the point of which they fear any sort of uncertainty. And so they shell up.
They begin to emit an aurora of unhappiness and somberness which brings everyone around them down. They contemplate suicide regularly.
They enter this stage where they just don't want to terminate themselves, but be forgotten totally. For us, all looks on the past trigger shame and embarrassment.
