Dude, the cop is at least three times it's size. He could've handled it without his gun. He shot it on reflex, because that's what he is trained to do. But that doesn't mean that it is justified. I always hate things like this, because it's not hard to train a dog. I've had a large Rottweiler who is a guard dog and she knows this incredible command.

Dogs evolved to defend themselves with their teeth while man evolved to defend themselves with the tools they're able to make. There's no way you could defend yourself against this type of dog without getting hurt unless you're using a weapon, which is exactly what the guy did - there's nothing cowardly or dumb about it. Because what was he supposed to do? Letting himself get bit and wait until the owners take care of the dog? And for what? To save the dog's life?
