Under my parent's roof, I had to live the Boy Scout life. Be kind and courteous to others and that sort of shit. Living on my own, I was naturally an asshole. Fuck everyone else, what's in it for me? That didn't stop me from doing at least ONE act of kindness at Christmas time though. I can't explain why I do it except in that maybe there's a neuron at the back of my brain that believes in karma.

So anyway, I'm walking around downtown on December 23rd. Everyone's out rushing around to get the last bit of their Christmas shopping done. Fucking idiots. I do all of my shopping in September. That way, I avoid all of this bullshit and I'm not fucked for cash at the very end of the year. Why am I downtown then? Eh, I like to silently laugh at them to make myself feel better. Call it smug satisfaction.

I round the corner and there's a familiar sight. A feral shit rat staring helplessly through a pet store window at a large stack of fluffy kibble. I can tell by the contrasting blotches of color on her back and the various noises coming from them that she has a litter of baby shit rats with her. Oh! If only they had a box of that kibble and some place warm to live!

Upon arriving at home, I was honestly surprised at how little shit and piss there was back there. Maybe the mare hadn't eaten for so long that she didn't have much left. I unloaded my guests on the driveway, flipped the cardboard off to the side so that it wouldn't further reek up my interior and then beckoned the mare to follow me into the back yard. We walked down the garden path to the tool shed. I opened the door and encouraged the mare to enter. She looked around the inside and then back up at me. "Nice mistah? Dis nu am wawm housie. Dewe nu am nummies hewe."

"You're right." I told her. "Let me set up the portable heater and I'll bring you some food. Okay?"

Tears formed in the mare's eyes. Her foals were all crying about being cold and I guess she'd been on the lam long enough to know that my offer was probably the best she could hope for right now. She choked and sniffled but slowly nodded. I bowled her inside and tossed her foals in after her. Each one let out a tiny "squee" as it hit or rolled on the floor. I closed the door behind me. As I walked away, I could still hear the mare sniffling and crying.

"Fuck you and your complaining bitch." I whispered under my breath. "If I'd have left you downtown, some kind soul would have kicked you under a bus or you'd have all frozen or starved." At least here, I really was going to set up my heater and I really was going to feed them.

I flipped open the lid of my freezer. I remembered that there was a bag of freezerburnt mixed veggies somewhere at the bottom. Might as well use those up. I dumped ingredients together into my rice cooker. Nothing I'd eat but good enough for the mare.

Next step was an extension cord and the heater. It was a little ceramic space heater which I kept around for when my parents visited. Mom liked their bedroom a little warmer at night. I ran the cord from the outlet on the garage out to the shed. I found the mare curled up in the corner. Presumably, she had her brood tucked up under her fluff for warmth. All except for one. It lay in the middle of the floor with the front half of its body twisted 180 degrees from its lower half. Whoops. Guess I chucked it the wrong way and broke its back. The mare glared at me as I set up the heater but said nothing. Maybe this wasn't her first litter. Maybe she was used to losing babies to the harsh reality of the world. Or, maybe, she saw the loss as one less mouth to feed during an already desperate time. Personally, I was surprised she hadn't eaten the foal yet. Maybe the promise of food from me had kept her from it.

"Heat." I announced as I set the dial on low power. I picked up the dead foal and closed the door behind me.

Back inside the house, I collected up some garbage bags and some old t-shirts I wore when fixing shit or cutting the lawn. I knew from friends who owned pet fluffies that they need four basic areas in their living space. The garbage bags would act as temporary protection for the litter corner and she could make a nest from the t-shirts. For feeding, I had an empty margarine container as a food dish and another one for water. For entertainment and toys, they could watch the heater oscillate back and forth.

With the food not really even fully cooked, I dumped the sludge into the margarine container, filled the other one with tap water and carried everything outside. I set the food and water down carefully, threw the t-shirts into the corner and laid out the trash bags; securing them with my staple gun. "Food, bed, shit on the plastic." I instructed as I pointed around the shed. "And I'd better not find any shit or piss stains on my shed floor from you or your foals or else you're all out on your asses. Good poopies only. Got it?"

The mare nodded. I knew that I'd find a mess when I came back to check on them later. For now, I kicked the food bowl over to her. "Eat. It's all you're getting." With that, I left. There was one more thing I remembered that fluffies need.

I returned with my old desk lamp fitted with a 30 watt bulb. Fluffies are scared of dark places and although the shed did have a window, there wouldn't be much light in there come night time. And it was already getting pretty dark, pretty fast.

Inside the shed, I found the mare with her face buried in the food bowl. She was obviously not enjoying it but ate regardless. Her foals were whining for milk and she needed nutrients to produce it. She paid me no attention as I tied the lamp to a rafter and plugged it into the extension cord's second outlet. With the heater on low and the light's 30 watt bulb, it shouldn't trip the breaker.

The mare pushed the margarine container around as she licked for every last grain of rice. When she had everything, she waddled over to the water bowl and gave it a few laps with her tongue. "Nu taste pwetty." she grunted. Probably the chlorine and whatever else the city puts in there. Fed and watered, the mare waddled over to the t-shirts, gathered them up and carried them in her mouth over to the corner. She laid them out and arranged them into something that suited her and then offloaded her foals from her back. Sitting on her rump, the mare herded the first two babies to her rapidly inflating udders. "Dwink babbehs." she cooed to them. "Dwink an gwow up big an stwong!"

It was at this point that I left them for the night.

Christmas Eve.

I returned the next morning to check on my guests. Upon opening the door, I let out an audible sigh and shook my head. The mare's puke green baby had died because I'd thrown it to hard. Now, her brown baby was lying dead in the shit corner half buried in Herbie the big steamy pile. With food in her belly and her circumstances improved, the mare had apparently chosen to prune her litter of its last undesirable color. Noticing my presence, the mare rolled out of her nest and approached me.

"Why did you kill your brown baby?" I asked in a flat tone.

I held up my end of the bargain through Christmas and Boxing Day. I cleaned up after them and fed them. I kept the heat and the light on. It wasn't terribly warm inside the shed but it was a hell of a lot warmer than it was outside. I wasn't happy about the brown foal's death and my chance for revenge came when I discovered a little blob of foal shit near the heater on the morning of the 30th.

I dragged the mare over to it and forced her nose into the floor right next to it. "What did I tell you?" I growled at her. "NO shit on my floor!" She whimpered and cried. She tried to back up to get away from it but I held her. A better idea occurred to me. I shut off the heater. "No heat until you clean that up."

"Nu wan num poopies!" The mare whined.

"Fine. No food either until that's gone." I stood up and shut off the light too. "Eat it and you get your warm, food and light back."

I came back to check on them an hour later. The mare was curled up in her nest; crying about what a mean Daddeh I was. Her breath issued from her nostrils in little puffs of steam while the breath of her remaining three foals had already formed a frosty crust on her belly fluff. Nevertheless, she had licked up her foal's shit. Light, heat and food restored.

New Year's day.

After a night at the bar, drinking myself stupid until I was fluent in French, I stumbled into the shed. New Year's day meant a new year. A fresh start. Promises and good deeds done from last year were now null and void.

With the mare watching, I unceremoniously unplugged the heater and light, rolled up the extension cord and started pulling the staples holding the trash bags in the shit corner. "Wha doing Daddeh?" She asked quizzically.

"Eviction day." I replied in her general direction.

"Wha eviction?" She questioned.

"Time for you to get out." I replied; this time directly to her.

The mare giggled and jumped for joy. "Yay! Time fow mummeh an babbeh to go wive in da nice housie!"

I grabbed her in a chokehold and squeezed her neck as hard as I could. "No, you're not going anywhere except back outside into the fucking cold where you belong!" With that, I clipped the tendon in her hind leg with the side cutters I was using to pull staples. The mare screamed in pain. Every time she kicked, her now useless hoof flailed and flopped. I threw her outside into the deep snow as I attended to the rest of my cleanup. Last on my agenda was the three foals.

I found the foals cowering together in the nest. Red, light blue and the one which was probably the bestest babbeh, purple. I had no use for them and I didn't know anyone who would give me so much as a cup of coffee for them. What I did have was a neighbor with a one year old rottweiler who loved squeaky chew toys. One by one, I held them over the fence. One by one, the dog jumped up to receive his treat. The mare couldn't see her babies being crunched up and devoured but I knew she could hear it.

Job done. One more thing to do. I walked over to where the mare had landed. She was crying and sobbing over various shit that had happened. The loss of her litter, how much her leg hurt, how mean I was to her in general.

I kicked a mound of snow over top of her.

"See you in a couple of months bitch!" I said cheerily with a salute.

Ah, the life (and death) of a feral fluffy.
