Oh, considering they all take heavy place around Reach, the books themselves should be somewhat self-explanatory.

Halo 1 takes place directly after Fall of Reach, like minutes after. 2 is a few weeks/months if I can recall and 3 is immediately after 2.

Playing Reach would honestly just complicate it more as it can seemingly shit on a lot of lore the books establish.

Honestly, in the books based around the Forerunner/flood war will give you more answers about the Gravemind if you're interested in that. Plus it's interesting to see a Tier 1 civilization get it's ass tactically handed to them.

The Flood is pretty much just Halo 1 in book form for the most part.
