It reminds me of the Responsible Breeder story when the Tumblrina chick buys a fluff from the breeder, literally bred to be awesome and playful, and pillows it because she read on Tumblr that it would be happier that way.

The little guy was actually kind of cool and thoughtful, and she had his legs chopped off, lied about it, punished him when he got sad about it, and didn't care.

What made it spookier than regular abuse was that she was legit uninformed, and honestly believed the fluff was happier that way, despite everything the breeder told her.

SIDE QUESTION, as generic as it sounds, has anyone tried to rehabilitate a smarty with love and kindness (and a beating every now and then)? I get that they're hell gremlins to the max; I remember a short comic with a smarty trying to steal land and the homeowner picks him up (to the fluffy's confusion) and gives him a hug. The fluffy actually ends up liking it (though the guy just uses said opportunity to toss the little guy out of his yard).

Would persuading a smarty, with kindness and actual love, be enough to turn it away from being a dick long enough to help it live a peaceful life? If not I'm totally content to slowly lower the little guy into a blender. Would be an interesting scenario.

Well because the canons are a bit messed up:

-jolt resets it's memory, but some canons say it's a genetic disorder, so it'll most likely re-manifest

-it's a learned behavior, so the jolt will reset their memory. Unless you re-spoil them, they're fixed.

I buy more into the latter, but electricity seems like the easy way out, though very effective. But if the former is true, and a frustrated owner keeps zapping or zaps too lightly too often, then they end up derped.

The thing that gets me about the insane smarty or hellgremlin fluffies is that after spending time with my young nephew, I realized that their behavior is disturbingly realistic. Children have literally no concept of consequences or limits, and I've seen them yell at and pick fights with people they have no business trying to threaten. Given the limited mental capacity of a fluffy, who at best would be a couple of months old, the hellgremlin mindset actually makes a lot of sense.

My problem with the hellgremlins and the lawn invasion stories is that they're usually boring. Human meets fluffy, fluffy is an asshole, human tortures and kills fluffy. Not a lot of meat on them bones.

One funny variation of this I once read was that the owner had a pretty smart alicorn of his own, who then convinced the herd that he meant no harm (something to the tune of "this fluffy has a horn and he's not bad, this fluffy has wings and he's not bad either!"), and then proceeded to laugh at the smarty's attempts to scare him with the puffy cheeks and horn sparks. Alicorn got the whole herd laughing at the smarty, got the smarty into the chirping phase out of confusion/frustration. Alicorn and owner raise the fluffs, who were actually pretty chill, along with the smarty who mentally reverted to foal.

Another had a guy agree to raise the fluffs AND the smarty; after the herd began to truly love the guy, they saw how the smarty treated their new daddy and beat the shit out of him. I think it ended with the guy pillowing the smarty for raping a baby.

They can have humility and kindness towards others, or want only for themselves and enf anything that gets in their way.

The point is, they're so moldable because they were entirely meant to be completely reliant on humans. Unless they've got smarty in their genes or are spoiled by shitty owners, they can be whatever the perfect pet is supposed to be for you.
