I grew up in a working class city where we didn't have as many gangs as we did crews. I was involved in those crews. Violence happened but it was minimal. It was always quiet and always between crews. The aim was to support your neighborhood/city and make money.

Now that I'm older I look around at lots of small street gangs that have popped up and Jesus Christ what a bunch of retards.

Guys I grew up with in our crews are still involved but in positions of authority and leadership. Because as I said, we were smart, and business and peace was the name of the game.

Like I said. I grew up in a rough town. It was a diverse town. Every immigrant you could imagine existed. This misconception that we didn't know violence or still don't is naive. But what we all had in common was that we wanted power, we wanted wealth, we wanted to stop getting in trouble for "Gang stuff".
You need to be smart and brave. I did lots of "Dirt". But I did it quiet. I did it smart. I always looked for the smartest, most influential people and I did my best to associate myself with them.
There's no shortage of tough guys you can hang around with. But they lead you no where. You move up slowly and quietly. You don't throw up gang signs or showcase your dealings with the underworld. You showcase that you know a thing or too about politics. That you know how to be a a gentleman while being able to take care of shit when you have to. Once again quietly. Gang life isn't quiet.
