>>
>>715520336

I read probably 1 fantasy/sci-fi book every two weeks (depending on length). I've read the staples like Dune, Name of the Wind, GoT, Mistborn, WoT, ect as well as a bunch of random "lesser known" series. And this is by far my favorite, I can't recommend it enough.

The first 2 start off kind of slow/aren't anything to write home about (not bad by any means) but after that he establishes the characters and it really get's going. It probably has the best character development and coolest lore in any series I've ever read. The plots are pretty unique and keep you guessing. He also is a master at Plot archs, with several nesting ones within the series and stories themselves.

10/10 would recommend falling in love with

First book was great.
I really felt bad for the scene where he goes to the rich side of town to beg for money then gets the shit beat out of him by the guards.

The second book was ok but not as good.

I have already read them both 3 times and I am slowly giving up on there ever being an end.

I am now reading the Lightbringer series from Brent Weeks and the last trilogy of the Fitz Chivalry series by Robin Hobbs.

Fiction: I'll second Name of the Wind, Lord of the Rings, and a Song of Ice and Fire. I'll add The Great Gatsby, and I think the Harry Potter series qualifies if and only if you read it as a social commentary first and a fantasy epic second. Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter for its faith to both civil war history and OG vampire mythos. I'm about to get crucified for this, but I'll also include Go Set a Watchman (and not To Kill a Mockingbird).

Nonfiction: Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin, Arisrotle's Nicomachean Ethics, Walden by Henry David Thoreau, Robert Gates's memoir, and The Audacity of Hope (inb4 some shit about Obama, inb4 OP can't inb4)

He's no Tolkien. I personally can't see where he is going with his saga, he seems to be stretching things out much more then necessary.
Tolkien knew what he was doing from start to finish...
>>
>>715528633
Kanye is a mediocre rapper but My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is still a god-tier album. Rothfuss is great at worldbuilding and pretty good at fleshing out characters as well, which makes up for the shortfalls in the writing itself
>>
>>715523058
David Eddings kicks ass. Ever read The Elenium series by him?
>>
>>715528633
Agreed
>>
>>715528895
I mean, yes, but when was the last time you sat down with Return of the King and actually read it? Tolkien had an ending in mind the whole time, but it was honestly a kind of shitty ending.

I think part of Rothfuss's idea is that we all know how it ends - middle-aged hero washed up and working as a bartender - but it's not clear how he got there.

I'll admit my assessment is contingent on A) Rothfuss actually finishing the trilogy someday and B) having a satisfying plot line to get to that ending. If he doesn't do both, not only will I not like the third book, my assessment of Name of the Wind will get much harsher

That twist is what makes Name of the Wind interesting. What will take genius is making it work in a convincing way that's also satisfying - the protagonist doesn't die, and doesn't get a happily ever after ending, and we've come to expect one or the other.

Whether Rothfuss is a genius or just good at faking it I don't know

No one mentioned Michael Moorcock on a almost entirely fantasy thread. Im fukkin triggered dude.

IMO, all of Elric's saga and Dune is probably the best epic stuff I've read from scifi/fantasy. If it was on non-fantasy fiction I'd have to think about it for like 3 months to say something sensible (literally, too much stuff here, from many different cultures and times, types of writings and stuff. The more you know the hardest it becomes to pick one).

Non-fiction: Nietzche, specially what he wrote on morality, then the C Programming Language and probably Sartre and Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning (was that the title? read it too long ago, too late now as well lmao).

I personally enjoyed the second one more than the first.
As for his other mildly related works I'd say that the one about auri is god tier by it's unique narrative style alone and how it makes inanimate objects seem to have more personality than most other books can say for even their main characters.

My nigga. Just finished that book. Brent Weeks' Night Angel Trilogy is probably my favorite series of all time.
Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere novels come in close second (Stormlight, Mistborn etc.)

Yeah the second one definitely picks up a little more but that is kind of to be expected I think. I didn't ever read the one about Auri because I'm usually not into the whole "intercalary" book thing. But if it's actually good I may have to check it out.

The auri book is one of the most uniquely written books I've ever read, up there with house of leaves although not the same stylistically or thematically at all. It's also like a short story but I'd definitely recommend it even if you're generally into longer works.

Maybe 100 pages into The Fires of Heaven! I started that shit when I was in Middle school because a friend was reading it and I think Winter's Heart had just come out. So every few years when he would release one I would quickly read it and then by the next I would not remember half the shit that was happening with all those goddamn side characters he introduces. So I decided recently to go back and re-read them as a whole because it had been a while!
What did you think of how Sanderson wrapped it up if you've read it?

I did pretty much the same thing, started reading them about 20 years ago then got sick of waiting for them to come out so I left it at Lord Of Chaos and came back to them the year the last one was released and re-read them all. They start to slow down a bit and drag on when you get to Winters Heart but persevere it's well worth it for the massive payoff in the last 2 books. Sanderson finishes them off perfectly. If you didn't know there's no way you would be able to tell they were finished by someone else.

Unpopular opinion: This book was better than Old Yeller

>>715537397

I 100% agree with this. Sanderson is a master of his craft and I think it really shone through with how he finished them out for Robert Jordan. I know that in the last years of his life he basically was only taking notes for Sanderson on how to finish/suggestions but still it was beautifully done. I honestly don't think there could have been a better way to finish a series that spanned almost 3 decades.

I think it starts to bog down in the middle 1) due to the about of side/intercalary chapters that introduce so many characters and 2) Rand going batshit

But I agree the ending is well worth the wait and also the time you put into them.
>>
>>715537706

Mistborn for the same "style"/"period"

Dresden Files for something unique but with a lot of amazing lore and world building.

Robert Jordan - Wheel Of Time series
Raymond E. Feist - Rift War series (or anything else from Feist really)
R Scott Bakkers Prince Of Nothing and Aspect Empire series.
Brandon Sandersons Stormlight Archives and Mistborn series.
James Islington - The Licanius Triology (seriously recommend this if you're into Jordan and Sanderson)

I agree with you about this but even though it bogs down and there's a lot of Elayne and Nynaeve tugging her fucking braid chapters there's still enough going on for it to remain interesting and engaging. The Mat chapters especially are excellent, him as a character seriously just gets better and better.

>Elayne and Nynaeve tugging their braid chapters

Fucking kill me now. I just got to this part in the series and I'm slowly dying inside all over again. I blocked out how fucking bad it is. What I found super interesting rereading it is that Nynaeve starts out as a semi-likable character in Eye but then after book 2 he some how changes her into the giant braid tugging fuck stick that she stays for the rest of the book.

>Mat chapters

Fuck they are so goddamn good. I completely agree, Mat turns into one of the most badass characters in any book series. Every time I get to one of his chapters I am excited even rereading them because they are so fucking good. Mat honestly is one of the things that makes that series. Dance with the motha fuckin Jak O’ the Shadows

But I agree for all the random bullshit that isn't as interesting to read there is definitely enough to keep you entertained for the entire run.
