I just bought myself my first scotch a couple weeks ago, Speyburn 10. About as cheap as you can get and I didn't think it tasted that bad. My other choice would have been McCelland's Islay 12 but they didn't have it in stock so I don't know.

I have this at work, beautiful thing. I was never into whiskies but by getting older my palette and taste changed, and I start to enjoy the finer things. I pour very little of this, smell it with eyes closed and my mind takes me away to places long past.

If you like Laphroaig you should try Lagavulin 16. They are similar I find. Lagavulin has a much stronger smokey/peaty flavor but it's more smooth going down and sticks with you a bit longer. my favorite part is the smell.

Not him, but if you're drinking whisky without ever adding water, you're doing it wrong. Most whiskys will take a half teaspoon of water -- stuff around 46% will take a teaspoon or two.

Some whiskys are light, so they might not need a drop at all, but the majority of good single malts will.

Pubs in Scotland even serve you with a wee thimble jug with water.

So it's closer to Ardbeg than it is to Laphroaig. But both would be good if you enjoy Ardbeg.

Lagavulin for me is more smokey. possibly the most peaty Scotch though I'm no expert it's the most peaty one I've had. It's also to me a bit sweater and when compared with Ardbeg specifically it's much less salty. Maybe a little more sweat vs the salt in ardbeg. A bit smoother than both too, probably due to the sweetness. There's vanilla in it which i've never been able to taste or smell but I suspect this is key.

Also good to note it's the most enjoyable to smell. The aroma is... well it's just so good. very strong.

Not either of those posters but adding water has it's place. Sometimes it can bring out flavors you missed. especially the sweeter ones. I personaly think it ruins the nose though.

I might give a drink a splash of water the second time I try it but honestly I prefer the the more robust flavors which are.. well watered down when you add a splash of water.

Elmer T Lee is my go to. Elmer was the master distiller for buffalo trace until he died in 2013. When he passed everyone freaked out and started a trend of people snatching up every bottle they can find. Newfags are snatching up cases just to flip them. It's a great bottle of $30 bourbon and now you have to comb small roadside stores to find a bottle or pony up and pay double or $75+ on Craigslist. It's like dipshits who ask for Pappy van Winkle, they don't know what it is or what it tastes like but they want it because they heard somebody say it's the shit.

A big sleeper to look for is Willet. It comes in a big "I dream of Jeannie" bottle and it's the fucking tits.
37$ here. God knows what the rest of you all pay.

If you're drinking anything 46% or more, it's going to need a half teaspoon or more of water. Yes, it affects the nose, but the alcohol burn on the tongue masks flavour. Anything cask strength will need water, without exception.

The very process of getting a whisky to 40% requires watering down.
>>
>>715398493
you could also try a variation, put just a little water in your mouth and take whisky on top of that

It depends what kind of water you use too. Ideal bourbon water is twice boiled to remove impurities. That's why bourbon is made in Kentucky. The state rests on a shelf of limestone that naturally filtrates the water we use. If anyone attempts to use tap or bottled water with a quality bourbon needs to be decapitated

Interesting. Honestly I'd be way more open to trying different stuff if I could find it; I've never seen Elmer or Willet in either of states I've live(d). I don't know if it's just that I haven't found a decent specialty liquor store or something, so I guess I just need to look around.

Bourbon is definitely my drink of choice, I just wish I had more variety to choose from. My favorite that I can get anywhere is Woodford Reserve; it's just the smoothest one I've had so far and the most enjoyable to drink, but again my tastes are narrowed and there's a lot I haven't gotten to try yet.

>>715400487
I had it for the first time on a trip out west when I was actually close by Chicago, and I remember it not being bad. Not remarkable by any means, but a decent baseline IPA. I don't know if it's because the most recent time I've had it was without eating anything prior, but it had this massive taste of chemicals or something, and I had to almost choke through the rest of the pint. Maybe it was a one-off bad example, but that kind of an experience is hard to shake, especially when the only other memory to compare it against was unremarkable at best.
