One time an english teacher took points off a paper when i used a word she didn't know. so next paper, i used a shit ton of bizarre words nobody knows but were real and used correctly, and she just gave me a zero and told me she didn't feel like getting the dictionary.
so i started yelling about it in front of the whole class and embarrassed her into just giving me an A
thereafter my knowledge of words became a topic of interest for the class and i was always writing very long words on the chalkboard and defining them.

None of the boys respected her, constantly gave her shit and teased her. I was the brainy/nerd of our small male group and everyone cheated off me. Teacher did shit about it because she was too stupid to figure it out until the final day of class. She decided to fail me instead of everyone else because I gave her the most shit. nowhere in the problem posed do you assume that the boards are of equal length

and it might seem nit-picky and counterintuitive... but I personally did very poorly in math in elementary school. now i'm working on my PhD. elementary school math is filled with all of these ill-conditioned problems that "punish" imaginative students who can think up several solutions to ambiguous problems

This is because they hire unqualified women to teach. Look at the cbest test for teachers in CA, the math section should be harder for anyone actually teaching math. Testing should be more rigorous and subject specific. Primary and highschool usually don't like competent male teachers, they want a female babysitter. Walk into any middles cool or highschool, it's going to be a 5 women to one guy ratio. If they are nice they will let a guy teach gym or a difficult math class, maybe history if they are lucky. Just look at the pen color and see how right I am.
>>
>>715201358

Bullshit. The order of operations is:

Brackets/Parenthesis
Exponents
Multiplication OR Division
Addition OR Subtraction

Further, when choosing between equal levels (like multiplication and division), do the problem left to right.

Thus, the problem becomes:

20 / 5 x 4, which equals 16 because of the left to right rule.

no. it seems that the exercise was to see if the student would use estimation, not subtraction. "explain your answer" is highlighted so simple subtraction is NOT the "final answer". subtraction is subtraction, unless there was another requirement to write "definition of subtraction" as a reason for it being correct. in real math, you have to define even numbers as 2n and odd numbers as 2n+1 and perform hundreds of changes based on rules for proofs. obviously this kid missed the point.

If you look at the teacher's progression used to show the answer
10 min for 2 pieces
15 min for 3 pieces
20 min for 4 pieces
Then how many minutes for 1 piece? Hmm. By that reasoning it would take 5 minutes, but the board is already 1 piece, so it actually takes 0 minutes.
The problem is solved by determining the number of cuts (as others have already pointed out) [pieces - 1] so I say the teacher is an idiot for not recognizing that.

Otherwise there is no way a time could be estimated because she could be cutting it 1,000,000 different ways with 1,000,000 different answers.

When I was in 5th grade we were going over length, width, and height measurements of objects. My stupid teacher said that length was ALWAYS, the longest dimension of any object, period. She offered extra credit to anybody who could find any object that was wider than it was long.

I brought in my book on military airplanes and pointed out numerous aircraft that had wider wingspans than their lengths. The measurements were all listed in the stats of the aircraft.

She said wingspan was length, and nose to tail of the aircraft was width...

You retards would kill yourselves over Calculus if you were smart enough to make it out of pre-algebra.

In Calculus, you often have to solve things in dumb ways to prove you know the concept being taught.

For example, solve pic related following the directions, without using geometry to subtract the interior volume from the exterior. Approximate the volume using differentials.
>>
>>715212800
The thing is, this question explicity states HOW you are supposed to do it. Doing it with geometry is not following the instructions, while the posts you quoted are either vague or the teachers answer is actually incorrect

No, those common core lessons tell you exactly how to solve the problem. They tell you, specifically, "approximate a solution by quickly mentally rounding these two numbers to make them easier to deal with."

Then, next year, they teach the kids to do it while carrying the numbers rounded off and re-adding them to the end result. It's supposed to teach kids to be accurate at mental math and it's based on how asian kids learn to count, and how guys like Gauss thought.

When Gauss was like 8 his teacher had his class sum up every number 1-100. It was supposed to take all period. Gauss finished in a minute or two.
Because he arranged the numbers in pairs: 1+100, 2+99, 3+98, etc. They all sum up to 101 and there are 50 such pairs. 101*50 = 5,050.

This is the same basic shit they try to teach in common core. They look at how the best mathematicians thought when they were kids and teach those insights instead of just brute force solutions.

>>715213335
This right here is the REAL problem with common core. It's developed by a group that overtly label themselves as Marxists. They push Communist ideological opinions on kids every chance they get, especially in history and civics classes, and to a lesser extent science. Math doesn't get much taint, though.

If my calculus professor told me to approximate the zeroes of x^3+4x^2-8x+16 I would pull out Newton's Method and tangent line approximations using derivatives. I would NOT solve it algebraically. Because you use calculus in a calculus class. Not simple algebra.

The kids sitting in these math classes know that they're learning to round and approximate, not how to strictly add figures.

Or they don't know. Which is why they get counted wrong.

They are NOT taking kids who have never been taught to round and approximate and grading them harshly when they don't guess to do it on their homework. They're assigning these problems after these kids sit through at least one lesson, usually several, and by now, these kids usually DO know that they're supposed to round and approximate.

I think we are at the crux of the problem here.

Many posts in this thread say that the teachers are being cunts, but it's honestly the fault of whoever came up with the material.

I know little of the US educational system and a little about the infamous 'common core', but from what I've heard they get more money as a school based on student grades. It would stand to reason that there's some sort of control mechanism to make sure teachers are not allowed to give extra points or ignore mistakes on tests that have an answer sheet. Otherwise all teachers would say that all their students are straight A's and rake in money.

I'm going to assume that the problem is that whoever (or whatever organization) is making and distributing these questions isn't proofreading them, and the teachers don't have an effective way to provide feedback.

>>715213568
The method may be trying to instill knowledge and techniques found by smart people, but I think that even in the example you provided, Gauss was foregoing the method of addition he was taught and used lateral thinking. Some of the tests showed here effectively penalize lateral thinking, and worse still is that the answer is technically correct. It's just that this correct answer doesn't appear on the answer sheet.

The most logical thing is to find such questions that are badly made, and not make them count to the quiz total, for all students. I don't think teachers are allowed to do that though.

And for the record, at uni, none of my calc professors ever let us use calculators 99% of the time. That shell differential problem had to be solved by hand. I don't personally know what goes on in other people's heads. I figured out the shell problem in my head just for a challenge, and after a few grinding noises, I got pi times 190, or roughly 597. I'm pretty certain how elementary school teachers handle the delivery of math lessons is why so many kids come into high school hating it.

Well all bedmas does is take out brackets.

Otherwise it would be:

(20/5)(2*2)

Also it would be written like this ideally...

http://imgur.com/a/JEgvr

So really bedmas was just made up so that you could quickly figure things out and quickly write shit without actually thinking about how it works.

For instance:

You're trying to figure out how much you make every half hour. You know you work 40 hours a week and take home 600 dollars every two weeks. You've been thinking about it all day, but can't figure it out. Someone throws the equation on your desk and you say thanks.

600/2/40/2

You get 6'000.

That doesn't make sense, you can't make 6'000 an hour!

But then if you can understand the equation then you know that all you need to do is divide 600/160, because you know that there's 80 hours in 2 hours of 40 weeks, and that you need to multiply the 80 by 2 to account for the half hours...

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that bedmas in and of itself is bullshit, and you need to understand concepts.
>>
>>715215819
Because you use differentials for a host of other problems that CAN'T be solved with algebra.

The shell differential problem itself isn't even necessarily a geometry problem! It can be taught as "You measure a cylinder and your measuring device has a potential for error of +/- 2.5cm, what is the potential distortion in the overall measurement?"

You then treat this as a shell problem and determine that the actual measurement of the cylinder could fall anywhere in the shell you just approximated.

You can also google "calculus error propagation" for a closely related topic.

Teacherfag here (not in the US though)

While I want to get mad at this, I think that there might be something else to it. The teacher might've had the kids do this exercise to get a grasp of estimation and explicitly told them to not calculate the answer, but to get a feel for the numbers. Since the question ask for a reasonable answer and the fact that the teacher comments on the kid not estimating, that MIGHT be the case. However, I'm afraid that isn't the case.

If you actually want to be without a calculator, please learn one of the methods. They were taught in every math class in the country before TI and it's a shame no one knows anything
>>
>>715218987
You've studied a lot of pedagogics, have you? Feeling overwhelmed at the sight of numbers and giving up isn't gonna give anyone a good chance to handle math. If they learn how to get a quick overview of numbers they will most likely be able to process it better if they would need to calculate that number.

You seem to think that estimation would be the end game of learning math, it isn't. It's a tool, much like yourself. If I asked you to check how many apples you had at home, you wouldn't count each one separetely, you would make an estimate and then most like divide the group into lesser groups and add those together. Like "it's a handful of apples" then "I see two apples there and three apples there, yeah it's five". Of course, this process is most likely unconscious, because you were taught estimation in school. If you get proficient, you can do this with relatively large numbers rather quickly.

Just because you don't understand something, it doesn't mean it's bad. Please refrain from posting without thinking.

We don't know what the rest of the paper looks like, nor the instructions that the students were given. I've held classes where I spent a long time trying to get every single student to understand what we were going to do and yet after three "yes, I fully understand what we are going to do" they do the exercise in the wrong way, often with the excuse "I forgot lol".

Maybe there is a huge headline that says "ESTIMATION" with instructions that clearly says "Don't calculate, estimate!". Maybe they have been working on that all week and still, this student calculated the answer.

Given that the problem is really easy, it might be a very early grade and at that level you need skills such as estimation.

I'm not saying that it definitely is a estimation work sheet, but it might be. I'm not about to make a conclusive answer if I don't have all the info.

Most of the time, you're told to prove or show something. In that case the method is more important so ez numbers allow students to quickly reduce equations within the exam time.

Homeschooling is even more fucked

Literally every kid ever homeschooled is a piece of shit faglorrd
>>

>I'm pretty certain how elementary school teachers handle the delivery of math lessons is why so many kids come into high school hating it.

So many of their teachers hate it, and that feeling trickles down into the students. It would help if schools didn't place complete morons to teach math and science. My high school had coaches teaching math and science just to give them something to do before football/basketball practice in the afternoon.

I went to a college that had a lot of education majors. The majority of them were women who went into it for elementary education because the math and science requirements were so low. They would come right out and tell you that. If it wasn't for education degrees, they probably would have become strippers, or outright whores.

What about distrbutive property? It doesn't apply here because it is a multiplication inside the parenthesis instead of addition/substraction?

20/5(2*2)
20/(5*2)*(5*2)
20/10*10

I'm mentally challenged, help!
>>
>>715202439
>in no place outside of primary mathematics education are people unclear about the order in which they intend their operations to take place
This

I've studied math at uni and never in my life have I encountered ambiguity

It really goes to show that the problem lies in how insubstantial school is:
They throw you math without meaning to it, it's just random symbols that you are supposed to process mechanically
They don't do enough practical math

>There is nothing wrong with this honestly.
I think the main problem lies in saying "both are correct"
That's confusing as shit for children

If you teach common core, just TEACH. COMMON. CORE.
Or better still, tell the children to use fucking parenthesis

oh shut up
you should understand that the whole point of the excersice was for children to realise that only two cuts were to be made

The lack of clarification clearly means it's a long board, because otherwise you can imagine all types of crazy shit and get any answer
>>
>>715213568
>No, those common core lessons tell you exactly how to solve the problem. They tell you, specifically, "approximate a solution by quickly mentally rounding these two numbers to make them easier to deal with."
>Then, next year, they teach the kids to do it while carrying the numbers rounded off and re-adding them to the end result. It's supposed to teach kids to be accurate at mental math and it's based on how asian kids learn to count, and how guys like Gauss thought.

Except american schools include niggers and the teachers end up spending 8 years repeating the first couple of steps instead of progressing through the entire multi-year plan.

im 34 born and raised aussie - when i was taught the order of operations it was BIMDAS - Brackets, Indices, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. So for me the answer would be 1, Ive heard things have changed since.
>>
>>715203019
>if the student would use estimation
WAT
ARE AMERICANS TEACHING "ESTIMATION" TO CHILDREN?

it's something that shoudl come naturally from knowing math, wtf, how can that be a subject
I mean, teach fcking math, and then the teacher should use far-fetched examples to teach children how to avoid wasting time with complex operations, but how can you put that shit in tests? is ambiguos as fuck and it craps on children that are smart enough to make a simple substraction

shit

20/5(2*2)

2x2=4 - P.
No E
No M
20/5=4 - D
No A or S.
Two values to multiply are both 4
Final answer is 4x4=16
>>
>>715224021
Nevermind, it's just used in additions and substractions.
a(b-c)
a*b-a*c

>But now there's less board to saw through.

she's still sawing through the same amount of board. it doesn't say she starts crosscutting through the remainder, it's making the assumption she's cutting a board the same way, which would be again through the same amount of board just into more pieces.

Question: Is that a reasonable answer?
Answer: Yes it is fucking spot on, look at the math behind it. The person giving said answer most likely did the same math.

Can't see how that could possibly be construed as wrong

If the exercise is that you should round up and down to the closest, and find the difference between those, in order to quickly estimate, then the kid did not follow instructions.

Yes, it was wrong to have the exact number be a wrong estimate, but the exercise makes sense, and the kid didn't answer it correct. He could've said 25-100=75 instead, or followed instructions and rounded up and down.

Again, because I'm probably talking to illiterate nitwits, it was a poorly worded question when you wanted the kids to round up and down instead of calculating the exact number. They should've asked if 80 or 70 was a reasonable answer.

You can tell from the handwriting it's a chick grading the paper. It's amazing how dumb women really are, on average. If they had to rely on their brains instead of their looks to get laid, the species would have never made it out of the stone age. What a shame it is that most primary educators are women. No wonder we live in a country of morons here in Burgerclap.

there isn't enough information in the question to get a correct answer.

If you home-school, be sure to make them do some kind of out of home sport for a while as well as an out of home music program. Both music and sports can be very fun and rewarding. This also puts them in the position to meet new people.

I was sent out the door for a similar thing, we had english (non native), and she was talking about the different pronounciation of produce (the verb) and produce (the drink)
she pronounced it wrong and used it in the wrong context, so I told her. I was sent out and the class learned it wrong. sad day.

but the worst thing was that the classmates actually asked me "why do you care so much?" and "that it just gets me into trouble"

... i really hope teachers are soon to be an outdated concept
