One thing to consider here, from a different perspective we don't think about.

The U.S. did consider inviting Japanese leaders to view a demonstration of the first A-bomb, but considered the fact that if the test failed, they'd look supremely weak and have no valid threat.

Also, Japan still fought after the bombs dropped because they were still deeply entrenched in China (Manchuria) and pushed way south to possibly make it their next big offensive area to control. The bombs severely hurt the mainland, and the final nail in the coffin came from the Soviets who came in to the far east and stopped them for good.

I always hear plenty of morons that say the bomb droppings were bad, BUT they can't deny that it did save China from Japanese occupation. So there's another justification if one is needed.

The atomic bombings on Japan were absolute tragedies. They did avert what would have been an even greater tragedy: a mainland invasion of Japan. Also, with Japan's actions, it's very debatable just how much of their atrocities were ordered from high up, and how much was just plain lack of discipline and leadership on the front lines. Japanese officers didn't give a fuck what their subordinates were doing on the side, as long as they were not disobeying orders to do it. It was a chaotic free-for-all on the front lines. On the other hand, it's well known that the medical experimentation was ordered and overseen by top officials, including members of the Imperial family, and the emperor himself.

Germany on the other hand was not sloppy and undisciplined at all. Their atrocities were ordered from high, and they were carried out like clockwork. They were documented meticulously, and the people behind them seemed to take great pride in their "work."

Ever heard of Marcus McDilda? He was a US fighter pilot captured, and before the bombings, and was brutally tortured and interrogated afterwards. He didn't know shit about the atomic weapons program, or even the bombings themselves, but they assumed he did and tortured him to get him to talk. He finally gave in and told them that the US had 100 more atomic bombs and that Tokyo was the next target. That was when they decided it was time to surrender under any terms.

Incidentally he's a great example of how torture is not only a poor means of interrogation, but how it can backfire on whomever is doing it. The US only had the two bombs at that time. The fact that Japan bought the story of a man desperate to end his torture, cost them the war.

They were weakened badly, but they were still strong. A mainland invasion could have gone either way.

Also, another reason Japan got off so lightly was Russia, and later China. MacArthur thought that Japan needed to be rebuilt, and rebuilt fast. He thought that the Emperor was key to that. The US Department of War sent it's best lawyers to prepare a case against Japanese war criminals, including the imperial family. Officially anyway. Unofficially a number of them said that when they got there and were given orders on how to proceed, they felt like they were preparing a defense of Japan, and especially the Imperial family. As a result the Imperial family were granted immunity, and portrayed as being the victims of a rogue government. A few high-ups in the government and military were executed, but most received prison sentences, that very few actually served out, if at all.

This is why Japan to this day presents itself as the victim, and why it refuses to acknowledge much, if any wrong doing. It's also why US relations with much of South-East Asia were extremely rocky, and in some ways still are. The Chinese fucking despise Japan still, and they'd still love some pay back.
