Idk if anyone else experienced this but I could only see it as blue and black until I saw a video where they exaggerated the photo even more to show what some people saw as white and gold. the background is over-exposed because modern phone cameras try to up exposure to make the details in what's in the majority of the photo visible. So what that says is that the dress is on the darker end of the spectrum. Which blue and black would be. If the pic was normally exposed, this is what it would look like.

First of, it's a matter of the right question. Is it: what colour does this dress have? Or: what colour does the dress in this picture have?

The first question is easy to answer by showing the original dress of which this picture was taken. It is in fact black and blue.

The answer to the second question is a different one.
First some thoughts. Black does never appear in another colour than black. It doesn't depend on the light. Whereas white always appears in the same colour as the light itself.
Then, the source of the light kis not questionable. Since we're taking about the picture of a digital camera there is only ONE possible source. It's the one the algorithm correcting the raw data noise assumes.
Whoever ever saw raw data from a high integrated sensor knows you can't see shit on it without doing heavy correction.
How do I know that the light is coming from the top right corner towards the camera? It's the blurry edges of the dress in this part of the picture. If the sensor would assume the lights come from the same direction as the camera the edges in the top right corner would be sharp.

In conclusion: as many in this threads stated this dress in the picture is in fact of goldish-brown and blueish-white colour. Open paint and extract the colour or just accept what others posted here.

To those who argue with their eyesight, let me tell you I have 130 percent on each eye and score on the Farnsworth-Munsell test 100 ( or 0, depending on the scale) and your talk about colour correction is bullshit.

Of course the dress doesn't magically change it's colour but if you extract the first and the last frame of the gif and open it in paint you will see that it IS different colours.

How do we see colours:
An object that is green absorbs all colours except green. The green light is reflected to your eyes.
A mirror isnt 100% effective in reflecting light. Thats why the "mirror light box troll science" doesnt work.
As light hits the mirror alot of the light is reflected, a small amount is absorbed every time. As two mirrors bounce the light to each other more and more light is absorbed except for green, which reflects into your eyes giving it that greenish tint.

It's interesting, because I can't see that at all. I've done a lot of painting, and because of that I've trained myself to see the colors for what they are instead of interpreting them.

For instance, if I were to paint a blue sky with white clouds, many would use a lot of blue for the sky, and paint the clouds with just white. However, that would look like shit, and make it look very wrong. Instead I will make the sky mostly white, with a hint of blue, and some areas it might have slight yellow, and I'll add a bit of red to the clouds etc., which will make it look realistic.

If I were to paint the dress with blue and black, the pictures would be clearly different, and the painting would end up looking like shit and everyone would agree it was black and blue. But to get the same effect I'd have to paint the "white and gold" version, which would make everyone see it differently, just like they see the original pic.
