OP, I also carry most of my weight in my stomach. The best way I found is jogging/running. Changing my diet doesn't work if I don't stay active. Other exercise helps, but when I run the fat just melts off. When I was at my peak of activity I was eating around 3000 calories a day and couldn't keep weight on. I didn't follow a diet either. I generally eat a lot of chicken and vegetables, but I also like red meat and junk food. It didn't matter what it was though when I ran. Start out slow, then add brief periods of running in until you can run for the whole workout. I wasn't doing marathons either, usually a 5k every night, with the occasional 10k.

If you aren't exercising, there is absolutely no reason to eat carbohydrates or sugar. Hell, there is no reason period to be eating simple sugars, but for Carbs, yeah, you should only be eating those if you are going to be doing some exercise.
Like others have said in this thread, you don't necessarily have to exercise to lose weight, buuuuut, if you want to expedite the process, you should work out. If you want to eat more than meat and veggies, you should work out. Also, you should be, at minimum, taking a multi-vitamin. Not a stupid ass one like Flintstones chewables, do your research and find a good one. Supplements are a good way to fill in the gaps on what you aren't getting into your body because you are eating less and some will take away the hungry feeling you get from not eating as much.
Take it from me, a guy right in the middle of this shit. I was 290 pounds at 6-1, I'm 255 now 2 years later, it's a struggle, but I've finally found my wheelhouse and I've been making progress after losing and gaining for a solid year and a half. Now I'm just losing, and most of it has been cutting out unneeded food groups. The biggest? Carbs, especially if I'm not going to be hitting the gym that day.
You can eat what you want, you just have to be willing to pay the price for what you put in. Ice cream? 2 miles on the treadmill. A sandwich? 20 min on the rowing machine. That's how you have to see it Anon. I recommend a gym membership to anyone who can afford it. I recommend DDP Yoga to anyone who has access to it. Bike to work or to the store. Walk more often. Crunches while you are watching TV, jumping jacks, burpies, etc., just move your body when you can. Get into the habit of it, that's the hard part. Once you make it a habit it becomes easier.
You can do this Anon! You will feel better, you will look better, and you will be more confident in your day to day life.
