It is possible that subconsciously, some practicers internalized all of the anti-gay rhetoric that permeates our culture, and this may have been a minor underlying factor, but I can't really speculate on that accurately. The most interesting reasons for the purposes of my story, and the most seemingly widespread ones-the ones that made the most sense-were in my above post and my response to yours, listed above.
