Anyone excited for virtual reality? Did you order the Rift?

Anyone excited for virtual reality?

Did you order the Rift?
>>
No, because it's not
>>
>>664538675
I did but thinking I should maybe have gotten the Valve/HTC one.
>>
Preordered the rift for 914 Canadian. Too bad its likely not going to be worth it as VR is still pretty new.
>>
>>664539373
I am thinking I will cancel my oculus preorder if the vive turns out to be a decent price. i think vive is going to have more games.
>>
After the 90's VPL patents expired, it is an orgy of lame hardware tracking head movements to worn LCD displays.
>>
DK2 owner.

tons of fun, not worth the money. And now that I'm $375 in, I cant justify getting the new one. It will be a lot better, but I still don't think it fits the market as a $600 product

If you have the money and you wont let it collect dust, it will be a thrill. Just understand its too much hype and money

what do you use it for? is waifu sex overrated?
>>
I bought a used DK2 a few months ago and it's pretty dope. the only problem I have with it is that everything looks pixelated as all hell, and the CK will apparently be a lot better in that aspect. dunno if I'll buy the new one though because I've yet to find a really good use for it outside of vr vids from naughtyamerica
>>
>>664541610
the pixelation is not going to go away until we have 10x better resolution. That said, you learn to ignore it.
>>
>>664541206
Dude, I designed tracking helmets in the 90's. The systems were inducing vertigo and is why the plug was pulled in the 90's. The Oculist Rift unit finally fixed that problem. In the middle of porting old titles to the new platforms and redoing the wireframes into higher resolutions from the ole SGI systems to smartphones and other systems.
>>
>>664538675
No.
It's a shit gimmick that will die about as fast as motion controls did

I think the recent Extra Credits does a fairly good job covering VR's challenges.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBaOpfSL2YQ

Do faggots here have an irrational hatred of Extra Credits like they do with every YouTuber who hasn't said faggot on camera? If so, keep it to yourselves.
>>
>>664538675
Augmented reality > virtual reality.
>>
>>664541977
oh yeah the pixelation stops being a problem after a bit... until a game prompts you to read something in small text

still a really sweet piece of tech, though. people itt comparing it to gimmicky motion controls have obviously never been near one
>>
>>664542032
>>664542040
It will take four more years for the tech to mature to a usable state.

six years after that VR is going to be mainstream.

tldr: we are still about 10-11 years away, but there is no question that VR is going to be huge
>>
>>664542835

Also the whole needing pretty darn good hardware to run the rift, seems like it'd be more prudent to wait, early adopters always get shafted.
>>
>>664543274
who's going to develop VR porn though and how long will that take?

Ill be exited in 5 years when its affordable and games are made with it in mind as a regular thing.

Waiting to see the Vive price before jumping in. I'm sure second gen and beyond will be much better, but I think I'm too into the concept to wait.

Don't think it will take the world by storm just yet, but can't see it going away (like the naysayers claim).
>>

right now all you need is a 65k camera, there are a number of companies doing low quality work.

that will change over then next few years. VR is perfect for porn!

>>
>>664545124
I'm interested in people's opinions, provided they've managed to articulate them themselves in a logical manner as opposed to the regurgitation of information provided by other individuals.
>>
>>664545465

Space combat sims are going to be fucking amazing with the Rift.

See the following:

EVE: Valkyrie
Elite: Dangerous
Star Citizen (If it ever releases)
>>
>>664545465
Why not? That sounds fucking awesome.
>>
I'll just do like I did with flat screen TVs. Wait for them to have lower cost and better features while everyone else wastes their money on the early shit version.
>>
>>664545679

Eh, half the fun of roller coaster's is the g-forces affecting your senses.
>>
>>664545671
nothing is going to be fucking amazing on the rift for more than 15 minutes. That is about how long you will be able to wear that shit.

I keep telling you fags, it is all going to be about porn in the early days, things will improve drastically after that
>>
>>664545540
You might be on the wrong website if you've come here expecting not to see regurgitated ideas.

It's too early for the tech to be as good as everyone wants it to be. But when it is (5-10yrs) it's gonna be really good.

Co-worker of mine is an engineer who built the first prototype of the Vive, you should hear him shit all over VR lol

>>664546095
all it takes is one "must play" game (like halo was for the xbox) to change everything

>VR
>Xbox
Maybe if we took the power of 30 Xbox One units, it could serve as a decent VR experience. It barely manages a single screen at 720p@60.
>>
>>664546060
are you speaking from experience (have you put on a vr headset for more than 15 minutes) or from your ass?

it is absolutely amazing that vr is going to be released commercially and so fucking cheaply. You can buy the Gear VR for 100$, the top of the line Oculus will be just 600$ plus the pc, this is seriously cheap territory.

That said the low resolution and the lousy software currently available will make it very hard to play for hours on end. They need at least 10x better resolution for that
>>
>>664546352
exactly. The xbawks was the equivalent of $400 today plus $50 for Halo and subscription money, and millions of people took the plunge and bought it.

i'm more curious as to what hardware people expect to be running to get a proper VR expirience, i've read a few places are saying unless you have a rig that can support 4k resolutions at 60fps your gonna have a bad low detail time

i did just buy 2x titan X sc's the other day 2nd hand for pretty cheap so just future proofing a little with that for when i decide to get a VR set

I feel sorry for those who spent 600+ dollars on the o-rift, it really is a huge waste of money.

-the headset weight does weight you down after 30 minutes, which makes you sweaty and feels like your wearing a dog on your face.
-The virtual reality is only amazing for like 2 hours then it feels very boring.
-you don't get a lot of view with the product, meaning you have to move your head alot to see what you need to see.
-after tilting your head for 40+ minutes the headset becomes loose and you have to re-position it.
-After 1 month you will go back to your monitor
