EE here. Poorly designed tube amps distort.
One transistor distorts less than one vacuum triode (and its exponential curve is shittier in terms of type of distortion than a tube's 2nd order polynomial). Solid state amps get low distortion by using lots of transistors to get high gain and thus manage a lot of negative feedback. You can use the same trick with tube amps and get arbitrarily low distortion too.
Also, not all distortion is equal, psychoacoustically. Tubes mostly produce low order even harmonics, which your ears and brain mask anyway. The human auditory system is far better at detecting as problematic higher order or odd harmonics.

I had a pair of Beyerdynamics DT 770s that I returned for basically that reason. Didn't work for the music I listen to, any driving kickdrum just overwhelmed the rest of the track. Would be better for electronic and hip hop, I think.

The proper reference for audio equipment is live acoustic music. I go jazz and classical concerts where there is no electronics between the physical instrument and my ears, and I can say that vinyl adds a shit more distortion than a good digital recording (you don't even need 24/96; a good CD played back through a high end DAC with low jitter clock is miles ahead of vinyl).
