To try to start things off, here's a re-write I did of a story someone posted in a previous thread about getting beaten up in Camden, NJ.

Basically, the story went something like this:

> been there for a few days, decides to walk to the store for grandmother, by himself
> apparently, a very bad idea
> walks inside store, big, older white guy clerk immediately says that he should not be there, that it's not safe for him
> Mexican kid/guy walks out of the store after making purchase and is encountered by 3 large, black males walking down the sidewalk
> one of the black guys says that one of them dropped their bag of dope and that they saw him pick it up and take it
> Mexican kid/guy says he is legitimately frightened, as the 3 black males are huge and don't appear to be fucking around
> Mexican kid/guy nervously says that he did not take their drugs and that he did not want any trouble
> the 3 black males decide that he deserves to get violently beaten up, so they immediately start to do so
> Mexican kid/guy says that the 3 black males all start punching him violently and he falls to the ground and is getting pummeled
> while on the ground, one of the black males starts grabbing his fingers and literally starts breaking them, he ends up with 3 fingers broken
> while this beating is happening, a cop car pulls up and blares his siren, the 3 black males start walking away, Mexican kid/guy feels like crying, because he is so happy
> cop pulls away without even getting out of his car
> apparently, in Camden, someone getting jumped by 3 guys was not important enough for the cop to get out of his car and check on the victim

The guy who originally posted the story that I posted here 581064646 told it in a better fashion than I just did; but, I'm sure you get the gist of what happened.

As for Camden being a really shitty place, in the same thread that the guy shared the story about getting jumped, another person also posted, a white kid (around 16-17, iIrc), and told a story about having gotten lost after driving his parents car home from a concert and ending up in Camden. I don't recall the specifics, but I think he was at a stop sign/stoplight and just got ambushed by someone on the street who smashed through his side window and dragged him out of the car. Ultimately, he said that he ended up getting curbed-stomped and almost died, literally. He said that the only thing that saved his life was some foreign shop-owner running outside with a shotgun and screaming at the people trying to beat him to death. And this happened because he was a white kid driving a nice car through their neighborhood.

I hadn't realized it, but based on lots of posts in previous threads, New Jersey apparently has several absolutely terrible cities in it. Besides Camden, people have claimed that Patterson, East Orange, Trenton, Newark, and Jersey City are all ghetto cities with rampant crime and truly dangerous areas. Overall, though, it seems as though almost everyone agrees that Camden is the worst city in NJ; and, likely, the most-dangerous/fucked-up city on the East Coast. People have compared Camden to a little Detroit. And many people have stated the same thing about Flint, Gary, and East St. Louis.

So, anyone looking to post some stories tonight??

I have actually had several Florida cities on the list before, but I've edited after getting feedback from people in different threads, and it seems as though the list I copied and pasted from this time did not have them included. However, I am definitely aware that there are lots of ghetto/gangster cities in Florida. I originally included Miami on the list, after seeing the city features on 'The First 48' so many times. And people have posted and stated that Jacksonville and Orlando are both pretty fucking dangerous. And while I am originally from/born and raised in Arizona and am currently living there now, the only other place I've lived in the Tampa/St. Petersburg, Fl, area, and there are some rough areas in both Tampa and St. Pete. Temple U sends out alerts when crimes occur on temple campus or to temple students, but will only send them out if they deem it appropriate to warn students, which they very rarely do.

A little over a month ago outside my apartment one night, this guy is getting the absolute shit beat out of him and he's getting his face kicked in by over a dozen niggers, call the cops and an ambulance and they get there in good time, but by the time they do most of the assailants had run, walked or driven off and I haven't seen or heard anything about it since. Called Temple and they said that didn't warrant an alert. i'm about 2 blocks off of campus and at least 100 students live around the area. Tried to file a complaint about the alert but they didn't acknowledge it, all they care about is their image of safety and not appearing racist. Pretty much have to hold a gun to your head for them to send out an alert, which seems to be happening a lot lately anyway.
Temple my be in the thick of niggerville but there's a pretty good buffer zone so most people don't have to deal with anything that's actually that bad. temple does have to employ and use around 200 police officers and personnel to keep it that way. Things may seem bad right around the school but they get much, much worse once you get a few blocks off campus. i can't say that i know quite how bad it is because I'm not that far off, but driving through it when going places it seems quite bad. A lot of armed robberies lately and there is gun violence semi-regularly, more often against non-students, which you won't really hear about. Can't say for sure though or really compare, I don't think where I am at least matches up to be quite as bad as some other places.

Haven't really been elsewhere bad but my gf is from Baltimore she says that was pretty bad too she's seen a lot of crime even outside her house which is in a slightly better area than some.

I live downtown Flint currently. I lived on the south side of Flint back then. Boulder Creek is on the south side as well. Cleveland sure seems like it's a fucked-up place, but people in previous threads have tried to defend the city and say that it's gotten much better in recent years. Which may be true; but it still surely has some scary areas. I'm sure, like all big cities, Cleveland has some nice areas, but it seems like it legitimately has some of the worst ghettos in the Midwest, if not, in the country. It seems like it's probably like a smaller Detroit. Plus, Cleveland has been features on 'The First 48' a lot lately, and it just seems like the culture and the people there have that hardened/toughened attitude from being in the cold weather and the tough financial times over the decades.

People have also stated that Dayton and Akron are pretty bad in areas; and Cincinnati is supposed to have some rough parts. And, Youngstown has been mentioned as possibly being the hardest city in Ohio and that it has a mob presence there still. Have you ever been there? Or to any of these other cities?

I moved back to Michigan in 09, and it definitely has gotten worse since I left. I still keep in touch with friends. Its something new everyday. Glad you mentioned the first 48, a few of my brothers friends were on there. It's dirty like Detroit but not as dirty and there's not much graffiti as compared to Detroit. I actually live in one of the nicer areas of Philly (right near pats & genos steaks). Shit's just kind of wild here. I'm assuming that you're being sincere and not trolling me to try to bait me in to responding so that you can belittle and insult me, so I'll respond and answer your questions.

I'm actually in my late-30s, and I deal poker at a casino. I honestly just have a strong interest and curiosity about ghetto cultures and crime. It's something of a contradicting interest, emotionally, as I am an incredibly compassionate person and hate to see people suffer, so I don't like to see/hear about horrible things happening to people. However, I can't help but think of a person and their hometown and the people there being perceived/known as a tough place with tough people as being something of a badge of honor.

I think my interest in this topic started about 10 years ago when I was reading the 'Off Topic' forum on a boxing site that I was regularly on and someone started a thread called "Whose City Is The Most Ghetto" or something like that. And people posted personal stories about cities that they'd been to and why they thought it was ghetto. And I seem to specifically recall stories about Detroit and Philadelphia being shared. And I just found the topic to be interesting and intriguing and and I've been somewhat fascinated with it since then.

And in regard to Detroit, something that stuck with me was a link that someone posted to an article about a crime that had recently happened in Detroit, where some kid (like 17 years-old, I think) had been shot, and the paramedics showed up first, and they found the kid lying in the street crying/moaning. So, as the paramedics load the kid on to the stretcher, a guy in a ski mask walks around the corner, tells the paramedics to step away from him, and then shoots the kid in the face with a shotgun, killing him. While the paramedics were right there. It was just so cold-hearted and violent that it bothered me and stuck with me. And it just seems to be par for the course for the cold, hardened, violent culture in Detroit.

He lay on a stretcher racked with bullets and screaming for help. Then the masked man returned with a bigger gun to finish the job.

As paramedics frantically stripped 17-year-old Billie Rutledge to find the first series of bullet wounds and try to save his life, the man, now armed with a shotgun, walked up to the driveway on Omira in northern Detroit. He ordered paramedics to step aside.

With that, he leveled the shotgun at Rutledge, as the paramedics fled, and blasted the teen early Saturday morning in the top of the head.

Police are investigating whether Rutledge was killed because he knew too much or was connected to a March 12 slaying in Detroit.

"We've heard that he was involved in a previous crime with another individual that is know

Billie Rutledge reportedly was released from jail on Friday after serving time for a misdemeanor conviction. He was sleeping at a friend's house on Omira, near State Fair, when an acquaintance woke him up and asked him to go for a walk.

Lemuel Rutledge, who met with police Sunday to help in the investigation, said his brother and the acquaintance walked up the street together.

But his brother was nervous and stopped to talk to a woman sitting on her front porch, Lemuel Rutledge said investigators told him.

"He told her he felt he was being set up for something," Lemuel Rutledge said Monday of what police told him. "She said, 'If you feel like you're being set up, you need to leave the neighborhood then and go home.' "

And like I mentioned earlier, the story really struck me and stuck with me, because it was so harshly violent. By the way, if you read towards the end of the comments on the page I linked, someone posted a link to a CNN article about an arrest being made in regards to the guy who shot the kid from that story. From what I recall, there was speculation that the guy in the ski mask who shot the kid was a drug dealer and a hitman. And I think that the guy in the ski mask and the kid who was shot had apparently/possibly killed another guy together, but this guy was worried about him snitching, so he killed him to prevent him from possibly talking to the police.

Motor City claimed the top spot for highest overall crime rate among cities with 250,000 or more residents, according to CQ Press' annual analysis of FBI data for 2011.

With 342 murders in 2011, Detroit trailed only New Orleans in terms of homicide rate. And the city reported the highest rate of assaults out of any other major city.

The FBI warns that ranking cities based on crime data can be misleading because each city reports crimes differently and some crimes go unreported.

However, an increase in crime can have a significant negative impact on a population, according to a 2009 study by the Furman Center for Real Estate & Urban Policy at New York University. And Detroit's unsafe streets are aggravating the city's struggle to maintain its already-dwindling population, which has shrunk by 25% since 2000.

Even though it still ranks second on the most dangerous cities list, St. Louis is a lot safer than it used to be. Murders have been cut in half over the past two decades -- as have the numbers for other violent crimes.

Still, at about 35 murders per 100,000 residents in 2011, St. Louis claims the third highest homicide rate of any major city.

One reason St. Louis's crime rate is so high is that the city has not grown beyond its very constricted borders, according to criminologist Richard Rosenfeld of the University of Missouri, St. Louis. Other cities have expanded outward by swallowing up safer nearby communities, which helps dilute the overall crime stats. Oklahoma City's reporting area, for example, is nearly 10 times the size of St. Louis'.

If the safer St. Louis suburbs were counted into its crime statistics, the overall crime rate for St. Louis would be much lower.

There's still a lot of work to be done. The city's murder rate is 20% higher than Detroit and nine times higher than cities like New York and San Francisco. The number of killings in the Big Easy jumped to 199 in 2011 from 175 the year before.
