Personally I feel that 1 is the weakest in the series if I absolutely had to rank them. It's certainly not a bad game but it felt somewhat short and small compared to later entries in the series as well as other rpgs and while the mechanics were all there I felt some were underutilized. For example, you had all sorts of noncombat skills you could pump points into like Lockpicking or Science(hacking) but it seemed like they were only usable very infrequently.

But yeah New Vegas is the best. It's not just my favorite in the series but probably my favorite rpg or videogame in general. Everything about it worked- a large world to explore, a great deal of freedom to build the character you want both statwise and roleplay-wise, lots of morally murky decisions to make, memorable characters and storylines, several unique but well-fleshed out factions, nice mechanical tweaks to the Fallout 3 formula, most major objectives could be solved multiple ways be it combat, stealth or diplomacy and so on and so forth. I really hope Bethesda takes note of the things Obsidian did with 4. Granted I expect to like 4 a lot - I really enjoyed 3 even if NV ultimately did everything better - although admittedly I'm a little nervous that Todd Howard will be in charge.
