It's specifically airsoft, which is a sport. Nerf would be acceptable on /toy/, but competitive nerf has it's place on /asp/. However, that place is not necessarily in this thread. The most nerf discussion you'll find here will likely have to do with airsoft LARP that also involves nerf guns or the occasional airsoft vs. nerf video that gets posted.

Those seem awfully unergonomic to hold.

Airsoft is not a sport. Neither is nerf. Both are toys that you play games with, similar to boffer weapons.

There has to be a line drawn to define the word "sport". For various reasons airsoft doesn't fit into those lines. its more of a hobby.

Not that it isn't great fun(and I love it) but airsoft defining feature is the guns, which are replica toys. But, airsoft talk is where you find it, and on 4chan, thats /asp/.

Is there really something wrong with calling it a sport that it's making you sperg out? Sure, it doesn't have the same presence like football, soccer, and basketball, but it fits the definition of a sport as a physical competition with other players.

Anyway, if moving pieces of weird shaped plastic on cardboard is considered a sport in this day and age, I fail to see why airsoft wouldn't more than qualify.
>>
But it isn't REALLY a competition, the moment you put a prize on the line honour goes even further out the window.
>>
>>765591
Nobody said there needed to be a prize. If one team is against the other then it is a competition.
>>
>>765430
Why does it have to be a sport? Chess is a sport, though maybe someone disagrees, because it has a specific set of rules and a common understanding. Airsoft is un-attached to those things, mainly due to the huge variety of devices, not just replica firearms.

These devices are used for many different scenarios and game modes, each unlike the other.

This is evident by the threads about airsoft on /asp/, which mainly focus on the equipment rather than rules or the game. Much like R/C cars, you can play games with them, but I would hardly consider it a sport.

The confusion comes from people who think just because the are enjoying a physical activity with others that they are now athletes.
>>
>>764948
Fuck, is that fucker here?
>>
>>765642
You can call it whatever you want, be it a sport or some mindless free for all in some places, but I say it can be classified as a sport because it fits the primary condition of an activity where you have to use whatever muscle you may or may not have to compete against other people in achieving a goal. That's it.

>it has a specific set of rules and a common understanding
Unless your fields somehow have no presence of refs that give a shit, I'd say airsoft events have the same thing going on. Yes, there are different scenarios for playing airsoft, but the most important part is that there are rules to moderate the game. You might want to clarify about that common understanding part but if I were to guess, there is one present in these games. Why do people spend hundreds of dollars on gear and plastic, drive hours on end, and hang out with a bunch of children and manchildren under the sun? It all comes down to people enjoying this sort of activity and wishing to spend so much time and money on it, just like how others feel about golf, tennis, soccer, and so on. This sort of behavior can be shown in a good or bad way, but that's with all sports.

Sure, most of these discussions talk more about equipment, but the most serious people are small in number and in teams talking about strategy and tactics. I've honestly never encountered people calling themselves athletes in airsoft though. I wouldn't call myself one either since most of my time for airsoft is sitting on a chair buying stuff online and teching, but whatever.
>>
>>765714
I agree with most everything you say. But just because your undertaking a physical activity doesn't make it sport. Fucking takes alot of muscle, but there ain't no rules in fucking, just what feels good.

Also, 90% of the time I play there are no refs.
>>
>>765834
Oh I hear ya. And if you got a shit community to deal with, then airsoft is something you wouldn't see as a sport when there's virtually no rules and most people are being cunts. Good thing the two fields I like the most care about that sort of thing instead of just the money.
>>
>>765834
Refs or no doesn't really matter. You need agreed upon rules that everyone does their best to follow or everything falls apart and no one has fun. Pick-up basketball is as much a sport as any other, but the rules will be different compared to the basketball you see on TV, and there's unlikely to be any refs. Nevertheless, it's still a competitive regulated athletic activity.

Airsoft just won't ever go much further than that "pick up" level because it's impossible to achieve accountability to the rules required for high-level play, but just because it can't be bigger on a competitive level than it is now doesn't mean that it doesn't qualify as a sport.
>>
>>765872
From my experience, you can't have a good community without first having rules that are strongly enforced by the refs and the landowners. It's different from pickup games when you are only dealing with less than 8 people and you can can call out the shit people do easily. For airsoft, especially in areas with more than 30 to 40 people in one game, a lot of new people start without knowing the system, so if they aren't corrected, they will continue to break rules and courtesy with others.

If you have the refs and the administrators to crack down on that behavior, people will get the idea and regulars will also be a part of rule enforcement. Frequent players know that the rules work for them and everyone else and once they see someone not going along with it, they will respond to that immediately. In my area, I've seen this more or less and things turn out pretty well. There's sometimes the occasional shithead but he doesn't last too long.

Nevertheless, airsoft as a whole relies on the honor system and there's quite a number of cracks to slip through. I can only hope people just follow the examples of good fields over time and start caring or else they close up.
>>
>>765908
Oh, I definitely agree, but I was more speaking to how "sport" airsoft is. No amount of refs or community can stop cheaters, blatant or subtle, when there's $10k or more on the line so there really can't be big tourneys like in my mongolian stop-motion-picture reels, but that doesn't disqualify its qualifications as a sport.

>>765676

>yes

>>
>>767462
Yes, there are specific rules. Just because there aren't any official regulating bodies to codify those rules doesn't mean there aren't rules. It's like saying pool isn't a sport just because there are dozens and dozens of unofficial house and game rules, but in the end it's all use stick to precisely hit ball.

And how could the physicality of a sport not matter? Sports are by definition physical. It's one of the three requirements for something to be a sport: Regulation, Physicality, and Competitiveness. The biggest argument you have is Regulation, but that doesn't hold water unless you mean that something has to be regulated professionally, which means you measure sport by what you can see on tv like a massive faggot.

Speed chess is quite physical. Choosing your moves isn't quite that physical, but you need fast and nimble fingers to move the pieces and not disturb the rest of the board so you can flip the clock. Professional speed chess players work their fingers and hands out constantly so that they can increase hand and finger speed.

What if you have medics. If your out do you go to respawn? If so, how many respawns do you get. Or is it a "One-and-done". Maybe its a zombie game.

>Don't forget minimum engagement distances for certain fps which varies but a lot of fields I got to is pretty much standard.

There is no min-engagement or "bang kill" where I play, it causes confusion and leads to arguments. Although we do have a set fps range.
>>
>>770338
Same with my arena. Personally, I fucking hate bang bang, its fucking retarded. Takes me straight out of the game and just seems dumb as shit. If you can't take a bb at pointblank, get better at perimeter
>>
>>770338
The rules vary per "game-type" but the general rule in airsoft is when you are hit, you are out of play. If medics are in play, you sit there and wait. Extra lives? Head back and respawn.
>>
>>770353
It's not "per game type", it's completely up to the organizers. You don't go to an NBA game and the referees suddenly say "3 pointers are 5 pointers time now lol"
>>
>>770378
Better analogy, touch football, flag football, Canadian football and American football.
All four follow the same concept and use similar rules, but have twists to them.
The NBA follows one rules set, and doesn't change from game to game for the sake of competition, because it's professional and people are earning money from it.

In a tournament setting for airsoft, I assume they would use a similar setup to the pro-paintball games I know of, single game-type, capture-the-flag with single lives.

Regardless, whether or not something is a sport is subjective to the people having the discussion, seeing as competitive eating, poker and chess are called sports by some people.

>>770338
Generally we have bigger arguments when someone has blood coming out of his face. We do have rules when it's okay to usethe ''bang bang rule'' though and when it's not though. I don't think we've had any arguments this year regarding the ''bang bang rule''. On the other hand we've had quite a bit of complaints about people overshooting at short distances.
>>
>>770378
Lots of variations on different sports.
Look at 3 on 3 hockey. Lots of different rules but they still have icing and off sides, they are just handled differently. Goalie makes a save, its not a new face off, just have to cross the blue line.

Its still hockey and its still a sport.

My R29 has decent finishing and internals, but it broke my heart when TM grips doesn't fit on it.

And you know it's mag is even smaller than normal size 1911 mags, which already have disadvantages compare to double stack mags.
Low FPS too, with that short inner barrel.

We also don't try to point blank each other in the face. We do have a surrender rule, but its not that same. If I have you dead to rights, I may ask you to call it, that person can still refuse and try to kill me.

I was generally making the point that airsoft isn't played the same, and has no specific set of rules.

Hey guys, I read the pastebin on getting started. I'm not really new to airsofting, played a few years back but I got out of it because my jg guns would shit out after a few games.

Now I want to get back into airsofting and I want to get some sort of P90 variant. The pastebin said to avoid echo 1 as they are shitty rebrands but my research tells me that echo 1 makes a reputable P90.

That being said, can someone recommend me a reliable P90 under $200. Preferably something that comes as a package deal with battery and charger and all that shit
>>
>>
>>775341
THANK YOU HUNGRY SKELETON
>>
>>
>>
>>775332
People don't say to avoid Echo 1 because they're shitty rebrands, but because they're rebrands. You don't really get a good sense of the potential quality of the gun and you don't know what they might have modified or changed. Shitty fake trades don't help. Anyway, hate to break it to ya, but there is no reliable P90 under $200. The design just has some problems. The only good P90 out of the box is the Tokyo Marui, though, you're in luck because the TM is $227 from Echigoya, so a modest increase. TM magazines are also a bit pricey, but their mid-caps are top tier and have the fake bullets. Don't even bother with the hi-caps. They're shit you have to take out of the gun to wind.

Of course, it also doesn't come with its own battery and charger, but you should be getting your own quality batteries and smart charger, so that's nothing special. I mean, if you bought a package deal and used a trickle charger, you'd probably end up with whatever shitty P90 you bought shitting out on you eventually just because of damage to the battery over time.

This is about half my squad passed out on a hilltop, maybe 15 minutes later we'd awaken to a 3 hour firefight, one of the best airsoft battles I've had.

But for now we slept after 18ish hours of combat and treking some rough terrain to get to the combat.
>>
>>775349
How does a shitty battery shorten the lifespan of the gun? Apologies if that's a dumb question
>>
>>775370
Shorten the lifespan of the battery, so it dies faster. I've literally seen people think their gun is busted because their shitty battery was worn down to only about 20 minutes of use. But a shitty battery can also give uneven voltage and amperage, causing damage to the trigger contacts and the motor.

>I don't think there's been a single argument about people abusing the bang bang rule.

Well maybe not where you play and thats truly great. But I'm sure other people here who enjoy the hobby have been to an event with the guy who sprints around screaming bang. Some organizers try to limit this by saying you have to wait a few seconds between" bangs", but no one seems to listen to this one.

What comes naturally is to draw a pistol when the bang screamer comes into your room and slot him. Then he might cry that I was to close and then I'll have to leave.

Bang kill distances are constantly misjudged or used improperly. The best rule, IMHO, is you call hit when the BB impacts, no minimum engagement.
>>
>>775188
Baseball is played worldwide, ever traveled in your life?

And yeah, college and pro football have different rules but the general understanding is the same, the core rules.

Are we to assume that to people shooting each other is airsoft? Because you don't need airsoft guns to do that, you could use paintball or nerf, or a sack of tennis balls. What truly defines airsoft as a sport, what makes it unique?

As far as I can tell, the only thing that is consistent are the airsoft guns themselves, and I don't think a sport is defined by equipment alone.

The best rule isn't always the safest rule. Or even the most financially sound rule. My local CQB field's bang rule is 2 syllables, feet planted, dead to rights. It's also a courtesy, meaning you shoot because you got scared/not dead to rights/finger slipped, you don't get in trouble unless you're doing it constantly and just to be a dick. There's a fair amount of newbies and kids who don't get the bang-kill rule straight off, but there's even more arguments when we have people shooting too close. We have a little conversation at the middle of the field and we're done with it. Usually no problems after that.

>>775607
>Are we to assume that to people shooting each other is airsoft?
As much as passing a ball over a net classifies ping-pong, tennis, badminton, and volleyball. You don't bring a ping-pong paddle to a badminton game, and you don't return a volleyball serve with a tennis racquet. I mean, you COULD, but then you wouldn't be playing what everyone understands as one of those sports, would they?

Those examples seem a bit more fleshed out than airsoft.
I mean if airsoft is:
shoot each other

Than say tennis would be:
Pass a ball to each other, over a net, don't hit the net, ball can only bounce one each side & inside the lines, etc.

Also, I'm not going to argue the bang kill rule with you. Use whatever rules you feel comfortable with to enjoy the hobby. At our field we think the bang kill does more harm than good, and every player we have there agrees.

A website out there wants to sell these things for $700. Fortunately for me they had a picture of it and I was able to copy it.

You can make this for around $100, and it works great for taking out vehicles. The only down side is that it cools down quickly if used too often, limiting the range.

A sport having more rules doesn't make it more a sport. Golf is knocking a ball into a hole in few strikes with a club. There are no rules to determine how many strokes constitutes par on a given course, no rules as to how big the course is, or the layout. But despite all these vagueries, golf is still a sport.

Airsoft ultimately comes down to if you get hit, you're out of play. There are modifications on this, and other conditions that might take you out of play (such as a bang kill or a knife/tap-out), there are also other conditions that might bring you back into play (medic rule, respawn) but the core of it is bbs propelled by an airsoft gun that hit your person and gear take you out of play. This is universal among pretty much every widely played airsoft game, from back-yard dicking around to full-scale milsim events. What more regulation do you need?

>We talking about Dodgeball?
Which is exactly why the equipment is part of what defines a sport when compared with others of similar rule sets. Back to badminton, tennis, volleyball, ping pong, etc.
>>
>>777264
Webster only cares that there ARE rules and that they are consistent during the course of play. ie, regulated. And what does dodgeball have to do with things? Did I say rubber ball that hits you takes you out of play? No, I said bbs propelled by an airsoft gun that hit you.

But funny that you bring that up, because dodgeball is a great example of a sport with many variations and rulesets played casually for hobby sake. Hell, it took a Vince Vaughn movie for it to get any sort of professional national league. We've already discussed why Airsoft really doesn't lend itself to professional play, and that's why any professional leagues have folded, but it doesn't disqualify Airsoft's status as a sport.

Looking at buying a first gun. The fields around me are mostly CQB, so I was thinking one of these two things:

3-shot M3 shotgun, mostly because it's cheap and I already have some shells from my backyard airsoft days.

$75 preowned mystery pistol from Airsoft Megastore

I'd consider AEG mystery box but the nearby, $15 a day field is pistols/shotguns only vs Gamepod which is an hour and a half away and $35 a day.

Opinions? Shotgun is obviously cheaper by a margin, but a pistol I'm more likely to keep using after I upgrade to a proper primary.
>>
>>777526
Fuck I never realized fields were that expensive in 'merica.
3-shot are shit. If you have low budget just get a cheap JG G36 or MP5
>>
>>777533
Er, $30 for Gamepod. $30 seems to be pretty average around here. I'm honestly not that surprised, it's hard to keep prices reasonable when insurance and (especially around here) real estate is so expensive. Most of these places are only open for airsoft 2-3 times a week as well. For comparison the local paintball field is $15-20 if you have your own gear, but you have to buy paintballs from them.

If you look at it that way, the sport came before the equipment. The game was know, and the rackets came later for a different variation of the same sport.

On the other hand, airsoft guns are toys first. Later someone decided how use them to play with others. This play does not a sport make.

So it stands, equipment does not make a sport, it may distinguish it from other sports, but first it needs a specific rule set.
>>
>>777357
Webster cares a great deal about rules when It comes to sports, he needs them to be specific and concise.

Airsoft as a whole is much too big for it to be hammered down by specific rules, nor does it want to be. You can enjoy the hobby many different ways, sometimes (though rarely) a person may not even fire their airsoft gun at another.

To give you some help, you might be able to consider Capture the Flag with airsoft guns as a sport. Like how some people think of Poker as a sport, but they don't consider Playing Cards a sport.

You know, come to think of it, my example of CTF doesn't even hold up as a sport.

You may have a specific rule set put forth, but airsoft by its nature doesn't allow for reasonable enforcement or adherence to rules. Its all on the honor system, any competitive gameplay would destroy that, if not atleast call into question.

So after further thought, airsoft lacks the basic mechanisms to insure fair play.

No. It doesn't distinguish itself as a sport until the equipment.

>>777703
The use of "specific" does not mean "set in stone" or else that would disqualify dozens of sports which have different regulations based on league etc. It means in this context "Free from ambiguity". This means that there are no gray areas in the rules and that they stay consistent. It means the rules do not change in the middle of play, or aren't supposed to. Though I don't know why you get so uppity about Webster when the Oxford definition is in greater circulation and even less stringent. Or maybe you're just looking for your point to be proven true?

>>777720
>airsoft by its nature doesn't allow for reasonable enforcement or adherence to rules.
Of course it does. There are refs and admins who go around checking people's integrity, watch for breaking rules. For hobby sport purposes, that's all you really need. It's not enough for professional play to be worth it, but as it's been said time and again, you don't need a professional league to be considered a sport.

Finally a reasonable person.

Until someone makes a hit detection system that's not based on honor call airsoft will stay somewhat more of a hobby than a sport, and even if that is fixed, it would be more of a speedsoft thing similar to paintball, which socal already does, mostly around LA there is airsoft teams which will do 5v5 or 3v3 depending and in a small to medium cqb field.

So idk why you guys are so bent on classifying it as a sport if it would take it closer to the speedsoft you guys hate so much.

>Free from ambiguity

Airsoft is ambiguous

Your cracking.

Professional league? You couldn't reasonably enforce rules in any competitive manner. The ref is not in the bush with me, I don't want him there, he's not with the guy I'm shooting at, the only thing to get him to call it is friendship. Get 2 teams together, these teams don't know each other, listen after the game for all the bullshit. You've done this experiment before if you have been to any large event. This "bullshit" factor can ruin events and it most certainly casts any sense of fairness far to the wind. In the end, the event was merely more than a bunch of dudes shooting guns, sometimes at each other, its not a sport.

Increasing voltage isn't bad for your gun, it just speeds up the wear process. I personally would get a 7.4v lipo instead of a 8.4 or 9.6 nimh.
There's videos of plastic lpegs running on 11.1v lipos and shooting continuously for hours before they fail; and when they do, it's a simple thing like the motor gear being stripped.

so how's airsofting in snow? does your local field have enough people to host a game? is it fun? Overrated? I got my gear today AND it started snowing so im really hyped.

Ah well, people have said they like it.

I see.

just kidding, silly. You have to be prepared for it, it's not like backyard or pick-up game when there are ~20-30cm of snow in the mountains
>>
>>780918
Its very cold, the snow increases the difficulty of movement so you get tired fast. If you wear too much you start to sweat, then the sweat freezes. People call their hits less, not because they are shady, but they can't feel it under all the layers(but you can hear it a little better).

I hate the snow, I'll go out for 1-2 games during the winter season. Still waiting for a good indoor field in my area.

That brings up another point, opening an indoor field in a location with seasons is a great idea. I talked once with the owner/manager at MAA(Milwaukee Airsoft Arena). He said, during the winter months they bring in more than 2k a day from softers, and MAA is small as fuck.

What is the difference between LiPo and NiHm batteries? I checked google and only things i found is that they have steady performance and then they die quickly when drained while NiHm tend to lose performance on steady curve as its getting drained. Also acoording to some RC forums, LiPo does not discharge naturally(without use) as much as NiHm. Are these claims true?

Thank you. Was trained in DPM. The UK has forests and I play in them. Multicam blends with everything a little, but nothing completely, so I don't like it much. Plus it makes people look like a walking coffee stain.

Don't you wear any headgear? I think I recognise the patch. I approve. Your belt looks a little out of place.

>>781486
I can't put my finger on why, but you remind me of a turtle or the teenage mutant ninja turtles. No Fucking clue why.
>>
>>781483

I'm UK too! I play a lot of indoor. MTP is my team colours unfortunately not a lot i can do. I have a tan belt load-out too but its not finished yet.

I don't wear anything on my head apart from my Comtac 3's and my glasses. Patch is from CS:GO its the Kawaii Killer sticker.

Yeah the belt is outta place. Need to get an olive one.

In short, LiPos are better in almost every way. Just don't drain them dry every weekend. 1200mAh shouldn't run out unless you're shooting semi literally all day.

>>780903
The weather and snow aren't generally a problem if you've got proper equipment and the right attitude. Games are slower and there will be lot less people. Some may leave early due to nickelshit based batteries or if they slipped and broke their gun. New players will have their range and accuracy decreased because they use shitty hop ups. Decent snipers might have bit of an advantage due to a number of reasons, but generally speaking 90% of snipers are shit anyway, so it rarely matters.
>>
>>781531
I think it's the round helmet and the angle that makes the camelpack the same curve around

Can't wait until I can pick up my G&P CAR-15 this week. The M14 is fun but it's not as practical since I still don't have any mags (as evident by my floppy pouches).

Oh? I'm in the East Yorkshire area. I play at 'ASD events' . ('Slaughterhouse Airsoft' and 'Elsham Airsoft'.)

Can't wait for our Christmas games. I got myself a sexy santa outfit with some nice tights with bows.

I have a question.

Where does /asg/ finds motivation to wake up early on sunday, gear up, go to the field and wait roughly an hour for the game to start?

I have no friends who play, so it gets really awkward.
>>
Is DE the same as JG? Im looking at the mac 10/11 smg for a cqb primary. Does anyone own a DE or a JG mac 10/11? Any opinions on owning one?

Just meet new people anon, you can make friends by talking airsoft or shooting the shit before a game starts.

Save money and buy the TM version if you want an AEP.

I had the DE version and the quality control sucked, the plastic externals were not that bad, but the pot metal parts are brittle as hell. The hop doesn't seem to be up to par with TM but its not that bad if you clean the bucking. Clone AEPs also have steel gears which are nice if you plan on going crazy and installing the MAG 130% spring and aluminum piston set.

I love my TM Mac-10 with the 242mm PDI inner barrel, great range thanks to the TM hop and a nice small FPS boost from the extended barrel helps a tad.

pic related: my gat that I love to spam here.
>>
>>782371

No clue if the DE and JG are the same, the DE has the bottom rail but the JG version doesn't. ASG also has a MAC-10 AEP clone that looks exactly like the DE version with the bottom rail.

I find it easy to get up early, which helps for my army training.
Sundays are great. Help setup. Have the testicular mass to approach a stranger or a group of them and say "Hey, how's stuff?" and try to get involved in the conversation.

Are people in your country unfriendly or something?

>>782565
I mostly live in Leeds, Just play in Hull.
Thanks, though I've never done anything Gay before.

Oh, I got myself a sexy Christmas outfit.

This reply is going in both threads.
