I loved the matches I watched from this period with Mutoh, Tenryu, Kawada and Kojima, however I've never heard a single person say a single nice thing about this period of AJPW, just what went wrong?

Death vally driver boards hates it because of the lack of workrate. Most old Ajpw fans left or went to watch Noah. Noah took the wrestling style from late 90s and carried on to outdo it.
Wheras Ajpw removed escalation aspects but kept the build and speed and learned reversals, Njpw was bit slower and more limbwork you as David Ditch said.
Personally to me, Ajpw booking was better Noah and Njpw. It later became about the booking primarly then the wrestling. Ajpw booking was similar to 90s Njpw. Sans the different style fights.
If you wanted a workrate related match post 2005 you would have to watch Suwama who was groomed as the last Royal road guy. Kohima was more of spots and sports entertainer guy at that period,
Nowadays Ajp stepped up the workrate a bit and cut down on storylines and heel factions.
