My personal favourite of all time is Bull Nakano. Round out the rest of the top 5 of all time is Aja Kong, Akira Hokuto and Minami Toyota. Maybe one of the Crush Gals should be up there, I don't know.

Meiko Satomura is a better wrestler even just based on pure longevity, and actually got a good match out of Manami Toyota in GAEA, which I would have thought was impossible.

Several younger women such as Arisa Nakajima, Rina Yamashita, Yoshiko and Misaki Ohata are all having better matches than Io Shirai is right now. They also manage to bring solid heat to their matches and feuds, although Io is crippled in that regard since she works for Stardom and nothing worthwhile is ever booked. Io was more interesting during her Purple Thunder Sisters days.

In GAEA, for sure.

Mariko Yoshida is my favorite joshi of all time. She and the joshis she trained were doing some incredibly innovative stuff in the early days of ARSION. Unfortunately post ARSION she never really had anymore great matches since her particular style was dependent on her opponents also being familiar with her submission and grappling heavy style of wrestling.

Meiko Satomura basically saved joshi by reminding people they could still have great matches. I think a lot of new fans don't realize the depths of shittiness joshi descended in the early 2000s. Not only did fan interest plummet but the quality of the matches as well and no one can quite figure out why. But Meiko, seemingly out of nowhere around 2007 or so, had a fantastic match with Aja Kong that would have fit right in with the best joshi matches from the early and mid 90s.

In the early 2000s you still had Hyuga performing pretty well. It wasn't all bad, it was in a rebuilding process for sure, but if definitely had some of the same feeling of people giving mediocre wrestlers the benefit of the doubt like they do now with STARDOM, Ice Ribbon and TJPW.

Nanae & Natsuki were in the ZERO1 booked company SUN. But NEO was going strong, though it suffered with a lot the way WAVE suffers now - to much comedy and veterans who paint-by-number. NEO actually had a ton of shows and most are on DVD, even their single cam house shows. Tamura even had some good matches with Hyuga.

I don't remember when SENDAI GIRLS started but some of those early girls like Okuda and Hiren were pretty good. Mizunami I think was in that class.

Many of the veterans now like Hiroyo & Ohata were just starting and you had Kurihara, Matsuo, Nakagawa. YuYu-Ran was also still around.

Companies worked together for things like the Jr. All Stars, and Emi Sakura was back to training wrestlers and also having some good matches herself.

It was definitely a down time & a rebuilding time, but it wasn't all bad.
