Middle Easterners spread Christianity to East Asia 900 years before the Europeans arrived. It disappeared shortly before they arrived, but in that period many Mongols, at least, converted.

After Europeans and Christianity were banned from Japan, some of them (I think thousands) remained practicing it secretly until Christianity and Europeans became tolerated in the 1800s, so clearly some of them cared.

Well a lot of japanese people wear random western things like crosses or cowboy vests or lacey gloves or swastika armbands for the same reasons. Its foreign and looks cool to them. As another anon pointed out there isn't really any practicing christianity in japan.
