He hadn't wrestled in over a year. Nothing can really prepare you for a pro wrestling match other than actually wrestling in a ring. You'd think he would've at least been training at the Power Plant while he wasn't wrestling on TV or at House Shows just to stay conditioned but he definitely looked blown up within the first 5 minutes of that match.

The crowd would have loved it. You could have some angle where the nWo starts to crack away at Sting from a psychological angle thus he starts wrestling more "normal' again etc. And yes Hogan would have recovered from it.

They never should have built it for a year, that was the first problem. People think that was a smart-decision but it cost them in the long-term.

Sting being out of shape is one of the reasons they've given, but the biggest one Eric's talked about was "Sting didn't really engage in the production meeting", which apparently gave them cold feet about the whole thing.
Basically Sting hadn't wrestled in a year, even though he was the hottest face in the hottest angle in the business that year. He'd just been hanging out in the rafters and coming down to beat on the NWO with baseball bats. He was going through a bunch of bad shit with his personal life, including pill addiction. And he was basically stoic throughout the production meeting before the show, showing "very little excitement" for the finish and not talking much.
So the story goes that Eric and Hogan changed the finish to Bret interfering and restarting the match due to Hogan winning with a fast count, after which Sting would go over and they could contest it later on if it didn't work out. Then Hogan got in the ref's ear and told him to do a regular count instead of a fast count, which fucked everything right the fuck up and 100% assured that he'd get the belt back the next night.

Hogan's ego ruined it. After a year of amazing build up, Sting should have kicked his ass and pinned him in five minutes.

The screwjob finish would have been fine and a great way to introduce Bret as a babyface if Nick Patrick had actually done the fast count like he was supposed to.
Hogan's ego fucked up the finish by politicking Patrick into doing a regular count, having him win clean, and then have Bret look like a heel for restarting the match for no reason. "Sting was out of shape and unmotivated" doesn't excuse an ending that makes it look like Hollywood fucking Hogan got screwed.
