WCW was going down the shitter way before Russo tho

Everything.

They lost $60,000,000.00 in one year.

If they were still making money they would still be on TV in some way, doesn't matter if some TV executive didn't like wrestling he would still put a profitable program on the air.

It wasn't the AOL- merger, wasn't just Russo or Nash, or the fingerpoke. They lost $60,000,000.00 in one calendar year. That's *it*
>>
>>2940854
I think a big part of it was the "Mick Foley incident," where on a live WCW Monday Nitro Tony Schiavone and Eric Bischoff spoiled the main event of Monday Night Raw (from when RAW was taped), that Foley as Mankind beating The Rock for the WWF title. After Schiavone read the result he sarcastically stated, "That'll put a lot of butts in seats".

Lots of people switched over from Nitro to RAW to see a title change on free TV. Some folks never changed the channel back.

WCW was already dead when that happened you fucking WWE documentary watching mark

vince literally controls your brain
>>
Giving talent creative control.
>>
>>2940965
Nah, it wasn't dead but it was on life support. They could have turned the product around in 1999, but they continued to go down the drain and then 2000 happened.
>>
>>2940867
>Russo killed WCW meme
>>
>>2940979
He was the final nail in the coffin. It was salvageable when he got there. They needed to restore their own credibility with their fans and then build from there. He was the last thing they needed. They shouldn't have tried to compete with WWF at that point. They had there own fan base of several million loyal fans that they ultimately pissed away.
>>
>>2940867
Russo was based you fucking mark. Everyday people watch old WCW shows on the Network and think "holy shit, WWE need to hire this Russo guy!"
>>
Honestly. The Montreal Screwjob.

That brought Bret over. That gave them the idea to fuck with the Starrcade 1997 with a screwjob-type finish. Ruining the climax to Sting/NWO.

And everything from there slowly went to the shitty. But they had a ton of issues beyond just that. Not building new talent and so many other stupid ideas.
>>
>>2940867
Eh, that's like putting silly putty on a thousand year old, crumbling dam, and blaming the putty when the thing inevitably goes to tits up.

Two things killed WCW and two things only

1) guaranteed contracts
2)aol/Time Warner wanting nothing to do with them
>>
>>2940986
Montreal Screwjob was a work. Vince sent Bret down to WCW to sabotage from within.
>>
>>2940986
The finish sucked but it would have been fine if they knew where to go from there with the nWo and Sting. Sting ended up doing nothing really and was just another dude and the nWo story continued to drag.

BASED VINCE REWRITING HISTORY

Please read the book 'death of WCW'
>>
>>2940992
This is true.

When the WCW boys found out why Bret was sandbagging, they had Goldberg "smarten him up" with a concussive kick to the dome putting Bret out of a business he had no respect for. Bret still has strokes today thinking about it.

I also know from my sources, that WCW had Owen killed to send a message to locker rooms everywhere. WCW is not to be fucked with.

Financially they may have went out of business, but when it came to playing the game, WCW was the dom and WWF was the sub.
>>
WCW never drew a dime. Building your company around a bunch of traitors isn't the best way to build a company. Macho Man and Hogan lost all their drawing power after leaving WWE. Also did WWE a favor by taking Hall and Nashetty because they are anti-draws.
>>
Giving Russo and Kevin Nash the book
>>
>>2940854
WCW was near death before the nWo storyline. That gave them an extra 2 1/2 years of life they wouldn't have had, but once the hype was over, they resumed their slow, miserable death.
>>
>>2940918
You do know people changed the channel by the time that ended on overtime when Goldberg ran to the ring to try and beat the nu-nWo, do you?
>>
>>2941419
Hogan turned business around even if the Dungeon of Doom angles were total shit

The state of you two, WCW wasnt dead at that moment they just had their last great year in 1998, by the start of 1999 they had lost some momentum but it was a still watchable product till spring stampede 1999 it was good after that everythiong went to shit, first the weekprevious to spirng stamped was the change of the nitro set, then it started sucking balls with GAB 99 thats when they started to lose money pretty badly
>>
>>2940854

Awful booking, letting the wrestlers book themselves
>>
>>2940854
Contracts. they gave millions to anyone willing to go to WCW.

Ratings weren't THAT bad for them to sell the company
>>
One of the most underrated reasons for the death of WCW has to be one of the guys who helped put it on top: Hulk Hogan.

From the debacle that was the main event of Starrcade 97 (Hogan engineered a non-fast "fast count" after beating Sting for 10 minutes, de-legitimizing Sting as the guy who could kill the nWo) to the heat-killing Hogan run after the Georgia Dome show where he lost to Goldberg, Hogan and his creative control clause killed his own business.

I don't think Nash gets enough blame for how shitty he was both as in-ring talent and as a booker.

Russo was clearly the final nail in the coffin but to say Russo killed WCW minimizes the shitty people who kneecapped it and beat it to within an inch of it's life.

Pretty much.

Im not sayin what Vince thinks, WCW ahd a really good 1998, program wise 1999 was the year it went down as far as fans go, A good contrast is to watch Superbrawl 1999 and then Hreat Americcan Bash 1999 see the diference on the card and storylines, thats also when Nash started to book very mediocre TV then when Russo entered they oss a lot of money because of the decreased audience and stupid expenses, the final nail on the coffin was the TBS merging with Time Warner as now WCW didnt have any TV, so Vince didnt do shit it was just the same thung that fucked Turner.

*For an extra faq, Turner regrets the merger tooo he says is one thing that he would like erase.

Vince stole most of his early WWF wrestlers (including Hogan) from guys territory owners like Verne Gagne, among others.
