Do Japs still believe in kayfabe? A pro wrestling promotion trying to pass itself off as real would be laughed at in the US. How does Japan get away with it?

The Japanese have no problem viewing pro-wrestling as a sport. Or they used to not have that problem. They even referred to Pride as pro-wrestling when it was around because MMA in Japan sprang directly from pro-wrestling with almost all of the original MMA promotions being started by pro-wrestlers.

There is no irony or sarcasm or cynicism from the average pro-wrestling fan in Japan like there seems to be from the average pro-wrestling fan in the West. They don't believe in kayfabe in the way a child would, but they're happy to go along with the ride with whatever their particular favorite promotions are pushing.
