In folk style wrestling we would call that a duck under a core element and basic in learning how to scramble. Duck under, hip heist, granby roll, sit turn

In TMA terms that's kata pretty and a great example for novices to study. you really see the core components of the technique as the japanese fighter reaches out with his arm and arches with his neck

Isn't it as fake as WWE because the Yakuza controls the entire thing?
>>
>>2850160
They stopped that and it was more that wrestlers would trade wins to keep their incomes high.
>>
>>2850160
Probably not, it's been almost 10 years since the match fixing scandal and a relatively small number of rikishi were charged. Both the government and the kyokai have been working together to stop it and have made quite a few changes that should prevent it in the future.

Every sport has it's scandals, this one was handled well and Sumo is back to it's peak popularity.

great bouts by Yoshikaze and Tochinoshin (his knee looks healed)

It seems changing to an orange mawashi is helping Kaisei on Juryo (2-0).

Osunaarashi wasn't taking any chances today and won by brute force (1-1). Why can't he be like this every day?

Aoiyama seems at is natural spot in the banzuke and so far it shows with a 2-0.

Gagamaru looks old. The least said the better. Early days but it does not look good (0-2).

Tochinoshin (1-1) was impressive yesterday and despise loosing to Hakuho today he gave it all.

I'm sure you'll all be happy to know that /ourguy/, the legendary student, the master of disaster, the ultimate underdog, the disgrace to his and everyone else's ancestors, and true inspiration to us all: Hattorizakura is back and has been promoted to jonokuchi 28, meaning that there is one wrestler ranked lower than him.

...and he's 0-2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpxkMqXr7Zw

that makes him now 1-71 lifetime
>>
>>2864519
A small number but they've all done fairly well, Tochinoshin and Gagamaru are quite notable. Bulgaria as well has produced a few.

>>2864550
A strong opening, I'm sure he'll be able to make the 0 wins he's shooting for.
>>
Day 3:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVFTu8kPCGE
>>
>>2865307
Ura choked hard. He was complete out of ideas even before the tachi-ai took place.

Even worst day for Mitakeumi. Either he thought it was a matta or his brain farted.

Tochinoshin's kinboshi against Kise is hard to pin down as to who deserves the credit. Kise was oblivious to any defense and Tochinoshin hold of the mawashi was a thing of beauty.

Yoshikaze IMHO so far is the best of the lot. What a start for a Komusubi.
>>
Today once again showed Hakuho is on another planet. Yesterday he beats Tochinoshin for the 25th straight time, never losing to him. Today Tochinoshin beats Kise for the 9th time.
>>
What the fuck was Mitakeumi doing? Did he think he was out or something?

Also good job on Kisenosato trying to be the shortest reigning Yokozuna in history.
>>
Kisenosato has a ton of pressure to compete, but he needs to take more time off. His rank allows it, so he should use it. He'll never heal from his surgery competing like this.

But it's also hilarious watching the Japanese hope crash and burn.
>>
I'm very new to watching Sumo, but I love the explosiveness of Yoshikaze. Is he a successful rikishi? Am I too soon in picking a favourite?

yoshikaze.jpg
89KB, 237x480px
>>2868583
He's never been one of the top wrestlers but he's frequently had an odd knack for winning upsets against top guys, that combined with his relatively small size is why people sometimes call him the giant slayer. In the Nov 2015 tournament iirc he beat all 3 yokozuna. He used to wear a red mawashi and I called him big red, now I guess he's the green giant.

He looks better this tournament than usual i think.
>>
Kakuryu out due to a "foot injury", free win for yoshikaze

how long until kisenosato follows suit I wonder
>>
>>2868583
In the top division, really all of these guys are good enough to deserve a place in your heart. Yoshikaze is a very fun wrestler to watch with a longstanding reputation of causing upsets. He can be a touch inconsistent though, if he could get over his consistency hurdle he'd find a permanent place in the top ranks.

>>2868677
Kisenosato shouldn't even be competing this tournament
>>
>>2849005

>>
>>2868746
I know your immediate reaction is probably a revulsion for fat dudes in diapers. That's okay, but I'd like you to give Sumo a chance anyway. If you enjoy any wrestling based sport, and you probably do since you are posting on /asp/, I think you'll find plenty to appreciate here.

>>2868829
>>
>>2864550
Why is he allowed to compete?
>>
>>2870275
his stable has an open door policy that anyone who wants to be a sumo wrestler, and is willing to put in effort and do what's asked of them can be one. Stables generally use the newest, lowest ranked wrestlers to do the day to day tasks of cleaning and whatnot, so presumably he does a lot of that between bashos.
>>
Hey /sumo/, what is a tell or give away that someone is going to try for a henka? How do the rikishis read that their opponent is going to try to pull a fast one?
>>
>>2870375
Handgames, posture and knowing who does them.
>>
>>2870446
That's what i have been starting notice on replays, especially with Harumafuji's posture at the tachiai. It's surprising people still fall victim so easily to his half henkas
>>
Usually root against the fat guys but Aoiyama has not won 10 bouts since 2014. Like to see him go on a roll here.

Tomorrow is Hakuho vs Yoshikaze
>>
Fucking Hakuho man. How do the other Yokozuna even look at themselves in the mirror?
>>
>>2870375
>>2870468

The biggest tell to me would actually not be the one trying the Henka, but the other rikishi. A henka is best used to punish a lack of attention. You'll often see when someone like Kotoshogiku falls victim to it, he's looking down at the Dohyo and not up at his opponent.
>>
>>2871050
Interesting, i never actually thought about it from that angle. When i watch the nhk highlights package later ill have to be on the lookout for that
>>
I started following sumo at last year's November tournament. I find myself rooting for Ura, Ishiura, and Yoshikaze in that order. How am I doing?
>>
>>2871199
Not bad in my opinion. Ura and Ishiura are both really fun to watch and are busting out a lot of little used techniques. Plus they are on the younger side so they have a good amount of time left in the game.
Yoshikaze is no spring chicken and has been exceedingly slow to get promoted to sanyaku. That being said he's been looking good these past few tournaments so id say that's all the more reason to root for him to do well.
>>
>>2871199
Ura is always fun to watch as he sometimes does amazing moves and unconventional sumo. He has gained some weight and is still performing good even at Maegashira 4 (his personal record) which many doubted he would even be able to reach. Having said that this is his 3 basho on Makuuchi so early days for sure.
Ishiura is an outlier in the sense that he started doing sumo very late compare to most people and it shows. It took him 4 years to reach Makuuchi and once there he hasn't show IMHO any further development or progression either physically or sumo-wise. Having said that Hakuho took him as his personal assistant so he must see some potential there.
Yoshikaze is the second oldest rikishi in Makuuchi. He is a staple in the Maegashira 1-10 range. Sometimes he dips below that range other times he goes above to sanyaku. The later is happening right now. Nobody expects him to reach Ozeki or stay on sanyaku for long.

Kakuryo is out.
Endo is out.
Kisenosato is almost guarantee out as he went to the hospital after the bout.
Terunofuji can't even walk and will probably also pull out.

On a lighter note Aoiyama and Hakuho share the lead.
>>
I think Hakuho may retire this year after he breaks this last record. I can't imagine he wants to end up like Kakuryu or Harumafuji, slowly being pushed into retirement by injury.
>>
>>2873008
There was no pillows when Ikioi won.
>>
Hakuho is unstoppable
>>
>>2873553
He's said a number of times that he wants to keep wrestling until 2020 so he can participate in the olympic opening ceremony.

His father was a legend in Mongolian wrestling (which is pretty similar to sumo), he held the highest rank which is equivalent to yokozuna, won the annual grand tournament 6 times, and won a silver medal in freestyle wrestling in the 1968 olympics, the first medal in Mongolia's history.

So he's often compared himself to his father, after he won his 36th cup he said he had finally equaled his 6 wins since there are 6 basho each year compared to the one mongolian tournament. And he said he wants to participate in the olympics opening ceremony as an active yokozuna, even if he's not actually participating in any of the events.

3 years is a long time, so we'll see. But he's certainly not retiring this year barring some huge unforseen injury.
>>
>>2873975
Ah that's good to know.
>>
>>2873975

I bet he really wants the grand slam too. Next year could be a good opportunity to get it with his rivals of the last few years all diminishing.
>>

>>
Yoshikaze didn't look competitive for even a moment. Is Hakuho truly this god damn good?
>>
>>2874750
Hakuho is literally the greatest rikishi of all time. When he's on form, he's practically the perfect wrestler.
>>
>>2874750

That Harumafuji win was a thing of beauty and simplicity from a grappler's perspective. Technically the most skilled rikishi of the pack.

>>
>>2881865
How an he keep competing when he keeps losing so bad?
>>
>>2890689
his stable, shikihide, has an open door policy and refuses to cut anyone who is willing to train and compete

that stable, which was founded 1992, did not produce a single wrestler who made it into the top two divisions until 2012 when the wrestler sensho hit jury 14 and went 2-13. There has not been one in Juryo or Makuuchi from that stable since. Taking 20 years to get even a single wrestler up to Juryo is the longest in sumo history.

They're well liked in the Kyokai and internal Sumo world. They aren't setting out to make top rankers, they're more of a publicity stable. Let anyone come and try Sumo and see if they like it, get kids involved etc etc

>yfw he wins the basho.
>>
>>2896985

Onosho is /ourguy/ now
>>
God damn it. I can't be too unhappy because based Mitakeumi won but I did want Hakuho to win two 2 tournaments, back to back and undefeated.
>>
I dont get it, does Ikioi suck big weewees or has he just had a few rough bashos? Does anyone actually expect him to make it to sanyaku?
>>
>>2898145
It's not really uncommon for guys to do really well in mid-maegashira but get destroyed in the upper ranks and just bounce back and forth for years

Some guys improve enough to stay in the mean grinder, and some never do. Ikioi is 30, he doesn't have much time left to improve and get up there.
>>
>>2898172
Well at least he's popular with the Japanese crowd it seems so he's got that going for him
>>
>>2897015
Who are Onosho's last 4 opponents?
>>
>>2898360

I don't think they plan that far ahead. If he keeps winning he will have to face the top guys. If he loses he will get easier opponents. Tomorrow he has Chiyotairyu 7-4
>>
>>2898179

And he's a great singer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umXamWPt0VE
>>
>>2898373
after that video I wouldn't mind hanging out with Kotoshogiku or Ikioi, they seem like chill dudes. Kisenosato seemed like he had enough of that shit at the end lel
>>
>>2898373
What the fuck did I just watch?
>>
Rate this basho
>>

This video is the only reason I can believe Gagamaru's popularity

Sorry Sumofags, but NJPW literally outdraws Sumo in it's own "Sumo Arena"
SHIN NIHON PRO-WRES, ICHIBAN!
>>
>>2898946
Ever seat is sold in that Sumo picture, because the tickets are for the entire day people come and go as they please to see the matches they care about. Very few people watch the entire day.
>>
>>2898373
ok now here's the real challenge, can you name all the singers?
>>
>>2898946
every single day of this tournament has been sold out
>>
>>2898373
https://youtu.be/ofZ7sX1OKVM

More of Ikioi singing, he's really good.
>>
>>2898946
Nu Japan fans are so cringe. They come in, don't know what they're talking about and then say dumb shit like this.
>>
In Japan rn and wish I could have gone, but travelling to Nagoya was too expensive
>>
>>2899641
A real shame my man, there's a good Sumo museum at the Kokugikan that you can probably still check out if you're in the area
>>
Is there a daily schedule somewhere
>>
>>2899710
Do you mean what time the matches begin or what matches there are each day? The matches begin to 8am JST and they do them in order through the entire day. Sumo DB is probably the best way to look at the banzuke in English: http://sumodb.sumogames.de

Rough timings for divisions are available and they have them in the official PDF: http://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/en/guide_english.pdf

If you're trying to watch live, Makuuchi matches usually air beginning around 12am PST / 3am EST and go for roughly 2 hours.
>>
>>2898373
Who's that again at 4:42? Kakuryuu?

Day 12:

>>
>>2900224
yep
>>
>>2900227
I hope Ura sorts out his foot/leg by next tournament. You can tell its effecting his preformance now.
>>
>>2900758
I hate Takaysu now.
>>
>>2900774

He seems overly aggressive just for the sake of it. I don't think it actually helps him do any better
>>
>>2895027
How is working for them to have a fighter with such horrible record?
>>
>>2901897
It's fine, their entire point is to let anyone do Sumo. The kid loves sumo and does it because he loves it regardless of how bad he is. It's a feel good story man.
>>
If there are still any Amuru fans left you'll be happy to know he got his kachikoshi and ended the tournament 4-3. He still probably won't be back in Juryo next basho though.
>>
>>2902671
I'd love to see him back in Makuuchi, ganbatte amuru!
>>
>>2902722
>lose
>win
Aren't japs supposed be racist?
>>
>>2902793

Did not mean to reply to you, that was meant to be about Aoiyama
>>
day 13: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8qqju01ocQ
>>
>>2903706
The Aoiyama decision was a complete fabrication. I am a fan but you cannot let him win just so Hakuho doesn't snatch the basho on day 14.

/ourguy/ ends this basho with a respectable 0-7 and the all time record of 53 consecutive losses.

On the same day a much lesser known rikishi with shikona Hakuho (or Hakuo, I am not sure witch) seems to have also broken a lesser record of most bouts wins on an entire sumo career with 1048 wins. Unimpressive if you take into account they were not consecutive and it took him like 17 years to do it.
>>
What the actual fuck was that Aoiyama decision? No wonder sumo is in with the wwe threads. What nonsense.
>>
>>2903710
Like every other Aoiyama decision has been a monoii this basho, all the rest of them were understandable but this was real hinky.
>>
>>2903809
>>2903875
it's not fake, it's predetermined!
>>
>>2903710
Could be considered a shinitai situation, I guess
>>
well done hakuho
>>
Is there any way to find out what the mochikyūkin for each wrestler is?
>>
The Aoiyama decision was a dead man rule call for sure. I think the retard announcing thought he was drawing it out with his delivery but it was just confusing and they should have made the dead man ruling clear immediately.
>>
Day 14: https://youtu.be/a7Ii4ZifBzM
>>
>>2906594
That's kind of neat
>>
>>2906594
Everything set for Hakuho to get the basho. I can see Haramafuji winning against Hakuho now and then but Aoiyama against Yoshikaze and then against Hakuho? That would indeed be something to witness.
>>
>>2905741
Doesn't apply here, Aoiyama was both flying - so if the dead man would apply here, it'd be against him, as Nishikigi was still balancing on the edge - AND he touched ground first.
>>
>>2903710
I thought this was total bullshit as well, but honestly I think it can be defended as shinitai like >>2904415 said, Aoiyama had a clearly superior position at the end.

It does feel like a fishy as fuck call all the same though with that weird judge "confusion" on announcing the monoii, what the fuck was that
>>
>>2907970
All of Kagayaki's limbs have left the ground before either of Aoiyamas feet lift or are out. Aoiyama definitely isn't flying
>>
>>2908451
>>2908701
should have been a do-over if anything
>>
The pastebin is ded

Really solid final match, great way to end the tournament, very exciting
>>
Day 15: https://youtu.be/TJA2FOr9nNY
>>
>>2910071
How long does this last? I mean, how many days it will be going on?
>>
McGregor would easily destroy Hakuho.
>>
>>2910757
that was the final day

sumo tournaments always start on the second saturday of every odd numbered month, and last 15 days
>>
When I saw Kintamayama had a 19 minute video I was sure it went to a playoff
>>
Damn that was a good final match.

Hakuho is the official GOAT
>>
>>2849005
Tfw you found out that sumo is rigged
>>
>>2911738
its not
>>
>>2911763
yes it is
>>
>>2911816
It's been almost 10 years since the match fixing scandal and a relatively small number of rikishi were charged. Both the government and the kyokai have been working together to stop it and have made quite a few changes that should prevent it in the future.

Every sport has it's scandals, this one was handled well and Sumo is back to it's peak popularity.
>>
>>2911738
The 2010 scandal absolutely harmed the sport, and I don't blame anyone for not believing in Sumo after that. Baseball still doesn't have it's confidence back after it's doping scandals. We have to look at how the organisations in change handle the situation, the Kyokai and the Japanese government did handle it pretty well.

I still can't blame you though, but try not to fall down the sumotalk conspiracy rabbit hole, they're crazy as fuck over there.
>>
What you say about how one armed man beat healthy Terunofuji twice in one day.
>>
>>2912382
One armed man fighting the man without knees, Terunofuji wasn't remotely healthy either
>>
>>2911196
>second saturday
sunday
>>
sad no playoff, especially sad no playoff with aoiyama upset. still happy he went 13-2 though. hopefully he can keep it up even against stronger dudes
>>
well that was a good tournament, lots of good performances

see you all in september
>>
>>2916481
September? That's a long time. They won't have any event until then or something?
>>
>>2917113
They do regional tours but there are only 6 main tournaments a year.
>>
I'm fuckin pissed that Ura was injured lads, he was doing so well up to that point and then afterward he was just stiff as a robot and had no resistance, I was sure he was gonna take double digits this basho and he seemed to be well on his way to do it, then it all just slipped away.

The kinda shit that happens I guess but man am I salty
>>
>>2917312
I suppose there isn't some way to follow the regional tours without being japanese.

Or enough interest for that matter.
>>
>>2919049
It's hard enough to even seen the matches below Juryo in the west, we're out of luck unless someone in the audience films it and puts it on YouTube.
>>
>>2919343
So, any sumo fan have to get used to heard news from articles and maybe old or home-made videos on youtube?

That kinda sucks.
>>
>>2921794
The English community is small but it's not so bad. There's always going to be a lull in news between honbasho though. Here's some links though:
