He could definitely still compete in MMA though, and he would get into UFC because MMA is a lot more like Pro Wrestling than it is the NBA. They still have to draw money and could be convinced that Samoa Joe would draw, it's the entire reason they hired CM Phil in the first place. It's also why MMA needs changing constantly because they need to protect their draws, There is no big UFC women's draw because Ronda Rousey got her ass kicked and nobody gives a shit whoever beat her is.

Joe has been doing Judo since childhood and also took up BJJ and Muay Thai later on. He has the background. What he doesn't have is youth. A much younger Joe that was 100% focused on MMA would have a shot at doing pretty well.
