It's no secret that the WWE is in dire straits right now. Ratings are at an all-time low, attendance has plummeted, tarped off venues have become the new normal when just a few years ago, the WWE was selling out arenas with ease. Meanwhile, NJPW, on the verge of collapse a few years ago, its flame trickling away until Tanahashi and Gedo quite literally saved the company, comes roaring back, not only surviving but thriving to be as popular as it's ever been. The threads here have gotten it twisted. "Is he a draw?" "How much of a draw is Roman Reigns?" "Did he draw?". You're all wrong. The reason why WWE is dying is because they market the WWE ITSELF as the draw in place of WWE superstars. NJPW markets the WRESTLERS as the draw and not the promotion or the authority figures, unlike the WWE. One look at the product now and what's readily apparent is that Stephanie McMahon, Vince and Triple H, they're the draws, not the wrestlers. The emasculation by Stephanie, the abuse by Vince and Hunter. The wrestlers are nobodies, they can no longer create superstars, nor would they want to. The last thing they want is to be held hostage and grabbed by the balls like they were with Austin and Hogan or how McGregor has the UFC by the groin. They're very quick to bury superstars who get over on their own (Zack Ryder, CM Punk and Daniel Bryan spring to mind), meanwhile you couldn't talk about the WWF in the late 90's without mentioning household names like Austin, The Rock, Kane and the Undertaker. NJPW has Kenny Omega, Okada, Naito, Tanahashi, Minoru, who they advertise instead of trying to stifle and that's what the WWE's main problem is, they don't have main event talent. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, they intentionally hold their talents back for leverage and dominance purposes and in return, there's nothing that grabs the viewers and encourages them to tune in. Look at all the comments for the G1 this upcoming month. "Wow, the G1 looks stacked." And therein lies the solution.

New Japan is nowhere near as popular as it was in the 80s and early 90s. But its rise has been impressive.
And it's not just Austin and Hogan that you have to talk about when it comes to wrestlers who put themselves over the company and slowly turned Vince into the bad booker he is today.
There's also Randy Savage breaking Vince's trust and going to WCW.
There's Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and Sid Justice/Vicious/Psycho.
There's Bret Hart (however much of that might have been imagined by Vince)
There's The Rock leaving for Hollywood after Austin had already abandoned him.
There's next-big-thing Brock Lesnar who left the company in 04 after 2 years of Vince pushing him as the new top guy.
There's Bobby Lashley leaving after Vince tried to make him the new top guy, giving him the Wrestlemania main event and trying to use Donald Trump to get him over like Tyson and Austin.
Vince has been burned so many times, and takes it personally, and it's made him give up on pushing stars.

Japan is also the size of one State in the US. Anyone who wants to see a wrestling show can see it from anywhere in the country. That means they're essentially running the same territory all year long. How many people would go to see WWE if it only ran arenas in the New York state every week and no one outside of New York state watched the product?
