Ive seen many matches between kendoka and hema guys. Usually the kendo guys are not very good, i,e, less than national or international level competitors and certainly not high ranked, though in fairness the hema guys probably are not at that level either.

The reason right of way was added into the rules of fencing was to orginally to discourage double hits. The idea is that the guy who initiates the attack first has right of way and the other guy needs to defend against it, even if he could land a hit before the other guy hits, first so that they dont both die.

"Die" might be a bit of a strong word. Thrusting with a thin sword will put a hole in you, which you can conceivably survive, depending on where you're penetrated.
A downward cut that chops deep into your shoulder is far less survivable.
